would love a 70s Guild, though if you have way to get one for even close to a used Seagull price please let me know!

I got my 70s guild d25m for about $500 off Reverb - it had a lot of body damage that had been visibly (and kind of sloppily) repaired but it was mostly on the side of the body where it wouldn't be visible to anyone but the player, and the neck/soundboard/etc. were fine. Obviously this was an unusual situation - some kind of repair shop liquidation or something.

xxp Thanks for the thoughtful breakdown and anecdote. That all makes good sense, and I believe you that it's well made for the price. I'm sure you do fine buying one used. I guess the unfavorable 70s Guild comparison is indeed what set me off. Everyone on earth takes the 70s Guild. There's just a thick cloud of positivity surrounding some guitars' craftsmanship, which makes me suspicious. I spent some time hanging around a guitar shop in high school, and the shop was a dealer for a few boutique brands they'd always push. The guitars were very nice! A friend with wealthy parents worked there, and he bought several of them new. The same friend eventually learned that these guitars, unlike the models they copy, quickly depreciate because no famous guitarists played them on stage, no dentists had one when they were younger, nobody recognizes them, etc.

IDK, in college my housemate had a Seagull and I didn't know anything about them at the time and I loved it. That's all, never got any pitch from a guitar salesman. IDK if they "hold their value" or not but they're also not that expensive to begin with? My American strat sells for roughly inflation adjusted what I paid for it, but there were many years when it had dipped below that and only now because it's almost 20 years old has the value come back, is my guess.

And my Guild would be very hard to sell for the reasons I mentioned (same reason I got it so cheap)

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Monday, 21 June 2021 18:53 (two years ago) link

OTOH I feel somewhat the way you describe about the Ibanez Artcore series. Constantly hearing "wow, what a great semihollow/hollow for the money!" But they're lame and a bit ugly and there's not that much special about their sound. Ok you can get a "decent" semihollow for $400-500, but why not just wait until you can afford a good semihollow since they're special instruments?

I was eying a beat up early '70s Takamine F-360, one of the (I think) "lawsuit" models. It's being sold pretty cheap because it needs some repairs to its bridge, but I dunno if I want to gamble. What would *you* do, ILX?

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 21 June 2021 19:04 (two years ago) link

Craigslist Seagull you could get in the $250-$350 zone and they are not even comparable to low level new Fender, Ibanez whatever brand that you'd get new at that price, so much better

also in that price range being concerned about resale seems kind of beside point

but really if you stray from big legacy brand names on the high end or low end you're going to be in trouble on resale. on my local Craigslist there are super high end boutique ones that they are trying to sell for $4000 and I'm sure they paid more than that, but no one knows what it is

one of the few mass market acoustics that have an extra wide nut and string spacing

Recording King has some good wide-nut acoustics btw

I think some Breedloves too

Tune-o-Matic Fenders are a crime against nature IMO.

Fender should do a run of Duo-Sonics with the three saddle Telecastery bridge though.

It's hardly a collectable but I'm feeling quite pleased with myself, I just picked up a barely used 2012 Squier Affinity at an antique fair for £40, I may make a project out of it and replace the nut/pups/pots etc

Welp, I just bought this: https://reverb.com/item/41426543-guild-s-300-d-pearl-white

It plays pretty well and the phase switch does what it’s supposed to.

Gawd, I need to sell some of my other guitars. Storage is becoming an issue and I’ve been spending So Much Money this year… but I hadn’t seen a white S-300 for that reasonable a price in a long while.

The band (https://salthorse.bandcamp.com) is taking the summer to decide whether they want to resume operations (two members are at the “holy shit it’s busy with kids” stage). Not sure what’s next if they don’t; I’d love to play bass in a band again, but I don’t want that pretty guitar to just languish on the wall.

Someone said they hate gold hardware but I love it. Maybe not in all cases but the likes of that Mary Kaye and such it looks perfect.

That guild is really cool and weird.

I've got one of the Danelectro Stock '59s coming - I had a vintage Silvertone that had been refretted and was so nice but I had to sell it to pay vet bills. The lipsticks were maybe my favorite pickups ever, hoping the current Danos are close to as good.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Saturday, 17 July 2021 22:10 (two years ago) link

I have 4 guitars, not counting the cheap classical guitar I still have because it was my first real guitar (it actually sounds very good for what is).

A late 90's tele that looks just like this but with humbuckers I put on because it has a buzzing problem. This is by far my favorite guitar and the easiest to play for long periods:

https://images.reverb.com/image/upload/s--G0c7JajB--/a_exif,c_limit,e_unsharp_mask:80,f_auto,fl_progressive,g_south,h_1600,q_80,w_1600/v1401560400/yvcup6dpgammjmhfhtl5.jpg

A Silvertone Jupiter 1431, which was the first electric I ever got, for $50. However, this is not the same guitar, mine went missing so I replaced it last year.

https://images.reverb.com/image/upload/s--ggiJ0fbU--/f_auto,t_supersize/v1625837705/umkifxultxiymrjz1555.jpg

A Fernandes Ravelle with a sustainer built into it. This is a touchy guitar, I still haven't gotten the hang of the sustainer and I think it needs some adjustments. I mostly like how groovy the pick guard looks (this is the only online picture I could find of one with the pickguard). Also it's heavy as shit.

https://a0.amlimg.com/ZDlmNzNkNTg0NzgzNDU3YjUzZjI0ZDE3ZGE3YjA0YTi9a-6GP9Wq5VluJWvEdGvdaHR0cDovL21lZGlhLmFkc2ltZy5jb20vOTNlNDk1MmU5NjRlMjdhYmY4YjRjMzE4MmE0NWU5OTg1MzA3ZDdkNmFjNzExZTNmMmU0YTNkYWY1NTQ4NDVlMS5qcGd8fHx8fHw3MDB4NTI1fGh0dHA6Ly93d3cuYWR2ZXJ0cy5pZS9zdGF0aWMvaS93YXRlcm1hcmsucG5nfHx8.jpg

And my one steel string accoustic, this Blueridge which sounds amazing (I purchased it on the recommendation that it was a viable Martin substitute and it def is)

I have an older Dano 59 reish, the pickups are very good but the neck is really special. I've hardly played anything else since i got it.

The tuners are crap and one of the worst experiences I've ever had performing music was when one of the bushing grommets flew off a tuning peg at the beginning of a set, which left me hopelessly out of tune the entire show.

Deflatormouse, Sunday, 18 July 2021 15:38 (two years ago) link

I really missed the silvertone. It's hollow and thin and it feedback like a motherfucker. I need to get my replacement setup (to the extent you can set something like this up) and start playing it again.

a while back on the tele/strat thread, some a-hole on reverb backed out on me on the sale of a cool Squier Cabronita w/a Bigsby, ended up finding this Godin that was kinda dorky/weird looking but seriously played SO well.

Anyway, a friend of mine who is a guitar tech/live sound mixer for a lot of bands, his main ones have been Helmet and Jerry Cantrell, also Passion Pit and a bunch of stuff (he told me today he's actually going out for a long tour with 100 gecs which is funny)...anyway obvious his main job died for a year and a half so he converted his garage into a guitar shop and has been supporting himself that way.

we were talking and got some wacky idea for mods to the Godin, and just got it back today. He put a Jazzmaster trem in it, new adjustable/intonatable bridge (before it had some of those non adjustable wraparound ones) and then cut a custom pickguard that I had drawn on a piece of paper for him...anyway, was an oddball now it's even more odd but I'm loving it. Am planning on getting new pickups (maybe humbucker mount TV jones filter'trons with a better single coil in the middle?) but my clothes dryer died so that's off for a minute.

Dig it bigly.

earlnash, Wednesday, 28 July 2021 21:53 (two years ago) link

Bigsbly. Me too, original look, not dorky imo.

I'm still lusting after teles. I tried a couple out at a Sam Ash, not satisfied with either - the "Player" tele had nice sounding pickups but played like shit, probably in large part from sitting on a Sam Ash rack and not being cared for. They had a Mexican Nashville Custom Tele that played much better but I'm not crazy about the noiseless pickups. Sorry for repeating myself from the tele/strat thread. Search continues.

Lately I've been doing a lot of bluegrassy flatpicking on the Martin D-18. I had this realization that it makes virtually any notes sound good as long as you play them cleanly, so I've been trying to come up with random chord fingerings to see if any sound bad, and I can't.

Guitar Center had this Squier Bass VI on clearance for some reason (they're out of stock everywhere), it needs some upgrades (the vibrato is crap, needs an entirely new nut) but it sounds so good playing like it a big low guitar.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Tuesday, 17 August 2021 06:20 (two years ago) link

That is a huge win, I remember the first time I tried out a VI and all my crappy riffs sounded like vibrating thunder. A good looking one too! Sometimes the grain on the Squier bursts look a bit off but that one is NICE.

I have that bass and was lucky to get it second-hand with Seymour Duncan pickups installed. Added LeBella flats to it but needed to hand it over to a proper technician to get it setup properly, they're known for being a bit fiddly. He told me that there's not much that can be done about the tremolo arm, it's just not that amazing

I got my first ever dreadnought acoustic a few weeks back. I've been playing for 30 years but have only ever played OM size and sometimes even smaller. Was convinced dreadnoughts were too big for me. I ended up trading a guitar for this dread and i am in love. It's got a terrified top, something I've never coveted, but goodness does it sound amazing.

Duke, Saturday, 21 August 2021 18:48 (two years ago) link

I ordered a Descendant Vibrato (from the guy who makes Swope Guitars) for my Jaguar so whenever that arrives I'll transfer the Jaguar's vibrato over to the Bass VI. Staytrem bridge probably won't arrive for months, sounds like they're backed up forever.

I have to start saving up for better monitor speakers and build some acoustic panels, my room can't handle the Bass VI thunder.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Saturday, 21 August 2021 18:57 (two years ago) link

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Saturday, 21 August 2021 18:59 (two years ago) link

Ha. I learned to play on my dad's 1970s Yamaha F-15, which is an OM size. Maybe that's were I got to like that size. It was playing a friend's dread that convinced me that actually I'm physically able to play a guitar of this size, and wow does that have an amazing bass sound.
