lol I was just coming back here to suggest Hermosa having finally found examples of burnt orange streetname signs above the stop signs there.

nashwan, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:35 (two years ago) link

caek mentioned Hermosa! Why didn't we listen? :-)

StanM, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:44 (two years ago) link

possibly because i repeatedly said i don't think this is southern california! haha sorry. and good catch!

the low rise relatively dense vibe feels like hermosa or manhattan beach to me, but they have no k street.

the only coastal k street i can find in CA is in san diego, but it's way bigger than this one, unless this is an alley behind k street.

― 𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek),

fwiw I thought that said "4th" street not K

― trap door to hell opens underneath (rob),

The answer has been sitting here in plain sight for the last four days!

cherry blossom, Friday, 18 June 2021 17:00 (two years ago) link

Picking additional shots when the answer was sitting there already 99% of the way there was tricky!

cherry blossom, Friday, 18 June 2021 17:01 (two years ago) link

xp to Stan
It was lost in the other beach towns - Redondo, Manhattan, ...

nickn, Friday, 18 June 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link

I looked on zillow for price estimates and in the original picture, the house on the left (xmas tree) is estimated at $2.3M and the one next door (behind penis umbrella) is $2.6M.

nickn, Friday, 18 June 2021 21:00 (two years ago) link

totally normal state

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Friday, 18 June 2021 21:01 (two years ago) link

HWAT, 2.6M!?

StanM, Friday, 18 June 2021 21:04 (two years ago) link

i was thrown by, among other things, lack of green bins. apparently hermosa is still rolling out green bins which i guess makes sense when a lot of them don't have gardens and many of them are neo-nazis https://www.hermosabeach.gov/our-government/city-manager/environmental-programs/solid-waste.

A single-family home one block from the beach in a desirable part of Los Angeles = big money.

first guess: maybe this is germany. but no obvious major port so not hamburg or bremen. maybe that's a lake then. but this is too nice for berlin (where the lakes are) so my guess is ... potsdam (on the basis that it's next to berlin but nicer and more verdant). general vibe is quite like this but this view has too many churches/towerblocks https://www.360cities.net/image/nikolaikirche-potsdam-skyline and if i'm right i certainly can't find the spot.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 04:02 (two years ago) link

Blocky apartment blocks lining wide boulevards did made me think of post-Soviet Europe...

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 04:51 (two years ago) link

there's also a distinct lack of churches which east germany or even further east, although there are some pretty ritzy chateaux type buildings

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 04:59 (two years ago) link

what's that round black thing with the white roof? football stadium?

StanM, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:11 (two years ago) link

I don't know, at first I thought it was something industrial, now I'm not so sure.

Blowing the photo up, it seems to be the sea on the horizon, then a narrow isthmus of land, then a narrow body of water - lake or head of a river - then the city. I think.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:16 (two years ago) link

i assume it's one of these xp https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gas_holder

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:18 (two years ago) link

Assume so too, but funny place to have one, in a built up area. Which again makes me think somewhere east of the iron curtain.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:22 (two years ago) link

there's a pretty famous one near central london but yeah that does look like it's pretty central in a smallish town which seems weird.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:23 (two years ago) link

The lower half of the pic looks quite fancy and much less Eastern European. I'm confused!

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:24 (two years ago) link

yeah all the individual buildings and look like fancy bits of germany or france (even the apartment buildings), same with the trees, but the almost complete absence of churches is not right.

that foreground roundabout with an ornamental lake/island in the middle (?) should be distinctive.

𝔠𝔞𝔢𝔨 (caek), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:31 (two years ago) link

There's an area to the right where there looks to be church spires, but hard to tell

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 06:07 (two years ago) link

I think I see two churches? red one on the right, gray one straight ahead?

StanM, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 08:14 (two years ago) link

I think this is Szczecin, just checking Polish coastal cities and the red church looks like the Basilica of St James there

nashwan, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 08:59 (two years ago) link

On second thoughts probably jumped the gun there, not sure things quite match up geographically.

nashwan, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 09:04 (two years ago) link

Don't think it's Rostock, big harbour there

StanM, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 12:02 (two years ago) link

Yes I've been looking, and failing, up in that neck of the woods! The city seems to have a pretty distinctive geography - at the head of a river I think, separated from the sea by a narrow stretch of land.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 12:12 (two years ago) link

This reminds me of another town on a river which we did a few months back, which turned out to be in Ukraine.

o. nate, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 13:15 (two years ago) link

Yeah was thinking Mykolaiv, the buildings, colour of the rooves, and street structure speak Ukraine to me

Diggin Holes (Ste), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 13:25 (two years ago) link

Klaipeda, Lithuania? Has the requisite isthmus but can't quite make the rest of it fit, despite lots of red roofs and trees

ignore the blue line (or something), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 14:00 (two years ago) link

Liepaja, Latvia!

https://goo.gl/maps/L3XWCVPk9bvKKGBQ6

Figured that the round red structure with the white roof was the best lead. Searched for pictures of round buildings and eventually found it. The "Great Amber" concert hall.

o. nate, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 20:56 (two years ago) link

Well done! So a lake, not a river. I have never heard of Liepaja but it looks kind of nice!

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 24 June 2021 00:48 (two years ago) link

o.nate again! well done!

StanM, Thursday, 24 June 2021 07:31 (two years ago) link

I had no idea thats what an isthmus was before, good manouevers!

the circular ornamental water feature is "Swan Pond"

No-Swan Pond would be more accurate

this looks like it is somewhere in latin america. the church that can barely be glimpsed to the right seems like it was constructed in the baroque style, probably pretty early, like 1600s.

i am going to guess this is somewhere in colombia. medellin?
