I've bought about 2500 items, but with about another 5500 items in my wantlist, mine'd be closer to the number in Ned's if I could afford it

one month passes...

my label keeps 82% of bandcamp revenue, including on bandcamp day, and the remaining 18% goes towards my debt i will never pay off :-)

— Austra⁷ (@austratalks) July 20, 2021

is it normal for a label to keep 82% of Bandcamp revenue?

lukas, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 02:33 (two years ago) link

That would depend on the label, sadly.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 02:45 (two years ago) link

Seems high

ニツク (calstars), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 13:09 (two years ago) link

I doubt Shields has the same deal.

Wouldn't this be a "signed digital rights over to a label" issue rather than a Bandcamp one per se?

Noel Emits, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:05 (two years ago) link

Yeah that's what it reads like, or that it was built into the label deal from the start.

Ned Raggett, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:07 (two years ago) link

Yes, bandcamp would have nothing to do with how the revenue is split up

She talks more about things here:

i released hirudin almost a year ago and it's streamed on spotify around 4 million times. based on a payout of $0.0038 per stream and taking into account my deal with my label, i've earned around $2662.38, all of which goes to my label debt, meaning i've pocketed $0.

rob, Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:08 (two years ago) link

So 20% is supposed to go to publishing? This shit is so confusing and everyone does it differently. I recently spent a lot of time looking into whether I should be getting any streaming revenue for a song that I produced for another artist, and in the end the answer I came up with is 'no', unless you specifically strike a deal that includes it. But since I do have half the publishing, it seems like I should be getting half of 20%, but I've never been able to make that happen.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 21 July 2021 14:47 (two years ago) link

Yeah I'm aware it's not Bandcamp's fault, just interested in what a typical digital sales revenue split looks like for artists. Name and shame maybe.

Self-plug: Got two new releases out today on my label.

https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a2784114773_10.jpg

Reels is a duo album by pianist Matthew Shipp and drummer Whit Dickey. They've been playing together off and on for over 30 years, in the David S. Ware Quartet, Shipp's own trio, and with saxophonist Ivo Perelman, but this is only their second duo session. It's beautiful. Get it.

https://f4.bcbits.com/img/a3479908077_16.jpg

Echolocation is a collaboration between cornet player Graham Haynes and electronic musician Submerged. If you like early '00s Techno Animal or stuff on the Electric Ladyland and Macro Dub Infection compilations, or music on the WordSound label, you'll like this. Very heavy beats, piercing horn, warped sounds to dive into and swim around in. Get it.

Don't be shy--I know you're all buying plenty of music to support artists, but still--let me buy you one more album/ep!

Since @Bandcamp started Bandcamp Fridays in 2020, Musicophilia and friends have bought folks over 200 digital LPs and EPs by Black musicians in these days where shows are not safe, and Spotify is paying literal pennies.

Please don't be shy--join in!https://t.co/DyygbpiR5G

only just now noticed that "The Time Has Come To Open Thy Heart/Wallet" popups are more frequent on some releases than others, I'm assuming this can be set by the label?

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Sunday, 13 February 2022 22:14 (two years ago) link

like, some never have it and some have it up all the time

or is it related to # of listens?

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Sunday, 13 February 2022 22:15 (two years ago) link

You can set how many free listens to give people, and to turn off the popup altogether if you like.

This is very odd.

I’m excited to announce that Bandcamp is joining Epic Games, who you may know as the makers of Fortnite and Unreal Engine, and champions for a fair and open Internet.

Bandcamp will keep operating as a standalone marketplace and music community, and I will continue to lead our team. The products and services you depend on aren’t going anywhere, we’ll continue to build Bandcamp around our artists-first revenue model (where artists net an average of 82% of every sale), you’ll still have the same control over how you offer your music, Bandcamp Fridays will continue as planned, and the Daily will keep highlighting the diverse, amazing music on the site. However, behind the scenes we’re working with Epic to expand internationally and push development forward across Bandcamp, from basics like our album pages, mobile apps, merch tools, payment system, and search and discovery features, to newer initiatives like our vinyl pressing and live streaming services.

Since our founding in 2008, we’ve been motivated by the pursuit of our mission, which is to help spread the healing power of music by building a community where artists thrive through the direct support of their fans. That simple idea has worked well, with payments to artists and labels closing in on $1 billion USD. And while over the years we’ve heard from other companies who wanted us to join them, we’ve always felt that doing so would only be exciting if they strongly believed in our mission, were aligned with our values, and not only wanted to see Bandcamp continue, but also wanted to provide the resources to bring a lot more benefit to the artists, labels, and fans who use the site. Epic ticks all those boxes. We share a vision of building the most open, artist-friendly ecosystem in the world, and together we’ll be able to create even more opportunities for artists to be compensated fairly for their work.

Whether you joined Bandcamp recently or have been with us since the beginning 14 years ago, thank you for being a part of this incredible community, and we look forward to serving you for many years to come!

I don't see a problem. What he describes is Epic as investor, giving them money to do what they're currently doing better. But as I said on Twitter, maybe don't turn a record store into the basis of your religion.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 2 March 2022 19:00 (two years ago) link

who knows where this leads, but it would be cool if literally everyone would just wait and listen and learn more before posting to conclusion (yes, i am new here on the internet)

alpine static, Wednesday, 2 March 2022 19:13 (two years ago) link

"Basis of your religion" is unfair, given that it's a highly accessible option for musicians to have control over selling their music, and a lot of people have had more success there than with any other shitty option available to them.

change display name (Jordan), Wednesday, 2 March 2022 19:20 (two years ago) link

Oof, this is definitely worrying.

I run a small label. I know what Bandcamp is, and what it does. I make good money there. But I also have my releases on streaming platforms via Distrokid, and a physical distributor who gets them to Amazon and record stores. I think this will be a good thing for Bandcamp in the long run, and I suspect that a lot of the people crying the loudest right now don't actually have any skin in the game. Because that's how the internet works.

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 2 March 2022 19:29 (two years ago) link

not crying, just concerned. your point about "they are just an investor" is a good one, as long as they don't now own a majority.

bad milk blood robot (sleeve), Wednesday, 2 March 2022 19:31 (two years ago) link

And just in case this gets into a broader discussion of music industry ethics, the deal I offer the artists I work with is very simple:

- the artist brings me a finished recording (in one case, I had an idea for an album and paid each contributing artist $1000 up front to do their part)
- I design the packaging and have the CDs manufactured, and pay all associated costs
- I pay the artist 60% of the profits, forever
- if the artist wants to re-release the album someplace else, or get another label to press up an LP version, they can do that stuff at any time, no hard feelings

but also fuck you (unperson), Wednesday, 2 March 2022 19:37 (two years ago) link

Sure, I have my releases on streaming platforms and other digital stores too, and make way more on Bandcamp (and personally I'm not interested in doing physical releases anymore). And I'm aware that it varies by genre and artist, but there's a strong scene for dance music on Bandcamp and people understandably feel very attached to it. Not to mention that it feels much better to be able instantly upload a release whenever you want, change it, take it down, message followers, etc whereas doing it through a digital distributor is more of a pain and has lag times.

Hopefully this will be good not bad, but when a company buys another company, they always say that nothing is going to change and that's almost never true.

xp

Mat Dryhurst is cackling over this

I don't really care about the epic/bandcamp thing but wouldn't it be nice if bandcamp users could see some of that upside

or if the service itself were an open protocol that couldn't change as a result of acquisition

Apparently a bunch of the Bandcamp Daily folks have either locked or deactivated their Twitter accounts. Despite J. Edward Keyes reassuring that nothing will change, it still feels like an ominous sign. Although maybe they just didn't want to deal with the social media burn.

I'm not going to knock whatever anyone needs to do for their mental health, but the timing of all this seems weirdly coincidental.
