Who wrote the sleevenotes? I suppose, in 1979, no-one was very interested in a new Can album.

Yeah I like "Can" better than Out Of Reach, Saw Delight or Flow Motion FWIW

It's good, but then it's got that "Can Can" crap at the end, that ruins it a bit

I love Can Can. I'd rate Can and Saw Delight as the best 'late period' albums and Flow Motion probably the worst (although obv 'I Want More' is great). I haven't heard Out of Reach though - did that make it to SACD? I've never seen it.

Dr.C, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:21 (fourteen years ago) link

No, the band don't want it re-released. It's not too good, but it's not terrible either.

'Can' would be top four Can albums for me, as long as you lop off the closing--I have to agree, "Can Can" is a pretty sad way to go out. But "Safe," that track is fantastic--especially the ominous swarm-of-locusts sound that slowly sneaks up through the track.

Speaking of late-Can, for any who're curious but haven't looked past 'Babaluma' (because of Julian Cope or whatever reason)--I also did a late-Can comp a while back, from the last 5 albums including 'Out of Reach' (which is almost as odd in its being-maligned-by-the-band as Kraftwerk re: their first several albums--just silly to be kept out of print, and definitely on par with at least 'Saw Delight' and 'Flow Motion'.)

Can – The Church of Latter-Day Can, Book One (1975-1979)

01. Can – Red Hot Indians [Landed, 1975] (5:38)
02. Can – Half Past One [Landed, 1975] (4:39)
03. Can – Smoke [Flow Motion, 1976] (5:20)
04. Can – I Want More [Flow Motion, 1976] (3:34)
05. Can – Animal Waves [Saw Delight, 1977] (15:30)
06. Can – Sunshine Day And Night [Saw Delight, 1977] (5:51)
07. Can – Give Me No Roses [Out of Reach, 1978] (5:21)
08. Can – One More Day [Out of Reach, 1978] (1:37)
09. Can – Serpentine [Out of Reach, 1978] (4:03)
10. Can – All Gates Open [Can, 1979] (8:19)
11. Can – Aspectacle [Can, 1979] (5:52)
12. Can – Safe [Can, 1979] (8:36)

[Total Time: 74:20]

I think on the whole I prefer the post-Can compilation, but there's a lot of great stuff on this one. [b]Get it here at Musicophilia[b]. (Both have streamable samples if you are too skittish to even download ; )

Love "Give Me No Roses"!

Nuts, whole hazelnuts, HEEUUUUUUUURGGHHH! (Tom D.), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 14:57 (fourteen years ago) link

ACR totally ripped off that bassline from Aspectacle for one of their early-ish tracks. Can't bloody remember exactly which one though - Waterline possibly, or something off Sextet?

Dr.C, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:01 (fourteen years ago) link

Hey Soundslike, thx for those Church of Latter-Day Can mixes, had missed those the first time around. I'm definitely in the "don't know much beyond Babaluma" camp, so I'm looking forward to checking them out.

tylerw, Wednesday, 15 July 2009 15:28 (fourteen years ago) link

I gave another listen to Rite Time last night. It's not bad--Mooney makes the album, everybody else is pretty restrained.

I haven't actually heard Out Of Reach in full or 'Can'. Must rectify that.
is it ok to post links to Can bootlegs i found on a blog?

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 19:56 (fourteen years ago) link

I agree, I prefer Can to Saw Delight and Flow Motion.

Have yet to track down the Rite Time remaster, though.

There's no need for one. It's obvious, ain't it?

The Sunburned Hand of Manfredd Man (Rombald), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 21:30 (fourteen years ago) link

The Can Live 71-77 set is pretty excellent-- I haven't heard it discussed too much for whatever reason.

Soon Over Babaluma increased it's votes over last time along with Monster Movie and Soundtracks.

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 23:18 (fourteen years ago) link

wonder if the 11 who didnt like Can changed their mind :)

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Wednesday, 15 July 2009 23:18 (fourteen years ago) link

I would not have guessed such a big swing--wonder what accounts for the virtual switch of 'Ege Bamyasi' (still my overall fave) and 'Future Days' (still a top 100 favorites album)? I wouldn't have any clue as to what's considered the zeitgeist of today, musically, but does 'Future Days' somehow better relate to it?

Hey Soundslike, thx for those Church of Latter-Day Can mixes, had missed those the first time around. I'm definitely in the "don't know much beyond Babaluma" camp, so I'm looking forward to checking them out.

Hope you like them, Tyler. Hopefully it'll spurn a couple new purchases (my constant nefarious motive) : )

Who voted "Sacrilege" ?

Mark G, Thursday, 16 July 2009 06:04 (fourteen years ago) link

"Halleluhwah" may well be one of the best tracks of all time. "Furure Days" is the better album though. totally second the result.

halfadozen, Thursday, 16 July 2009 09:41 (fourteen years ago) link

I keep checking to see if the pollstarter called it "Furure Days"

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 16 July 2009 10:29 (fourteen years ago) link

Whoops, spur, that is. Not spurn : )

Soundslike, Thursday, 16 July 2009 10:56 (fourteen years ago) link

Thank you tons for these awesome mixes Soundslike, really enjoying Book 2 at the moment. Is that John Malkovich on "Loading Zone" by Phantom Band? Really, really sounds like him!

Yes, Latter Day Can mix is great, played a few songs off it on my radio show last night (Karussell and the Eurythmics "never gonna cry" which was an accident but it sounded great on the air, thankfully).

Trip Maker, Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:03 (fourteen years ago) link

I think I went from Ege to MM.

Ian Boner (Scik Mouthy), Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:22 (fourteen years ago) link

and for all tom d's moaning on the previous poll he still didn't vote for Unlimited Edition

pfunkboy (Herman G. Neuname), Thursday, 16 July 2009 14:35 (fourteen years ago) link

Nick what made you change your vote this time? I'm surprised at the fall off in votes for Ege Bamyasi.

bong hitzvah (jaxon), Friday, 17 July 2009 07:32 (fourteen years ago) link

karl...arlk...rlka...lkar..., Friday, 17 July 2009 08:20 (fourteen years ago) link

Future days seems to me like the Can 'white album'. It's an album that gets more and more kudos from fans of the band whilst not being in any way representative of what an outsideers view of the music of can would be.

put simply, its the albums the fans listen to but you probably wouldn't recommend it to someone who wanted to know " whats this Can sound I keep hearing about (on ILM)?"

as more and more people listen to all the other albums, then keep returning to future, it climbs steadily up the poll.

I couldn't agree less, "Future Days" seems like the Can album non-Can fans like, I don't think it's a particular favourite of "Can fans" and I'd say "Soon Over Babaluma" fits your "White Album" analogy far better! Anyway, it comes and goes, now Neil Young's best album is "On the Beach" and Can's is "Future Days" etc, it'll no doubt change in a while.
