I guess I shouldn't extrapolate from the LA Times real estate section's "stars who just bought/sold a house" column.

Still looks like California beach town that time forgot, but I didn't think there were any of those any more.

nickn, Thursday, 17 June 2021 05:02 (two years ago) link

Starting to think North Baja, Mexico, actually.

Does Mexico have stop signs that say stop? Not according to Wikipedia

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 17 June 2021 05:36 (two years ago) link

Puerto Rico, maybe

Weatherboard houses in disrepair close to the sea does make me think Caribbean, but no idea where

Zelda Zonk, Thursday, 17 June 2021 06:12 (two years ago) link

alright well I will formally guess San Juan, Puerto Rico

assert (matttkkkk), Thursday, 17 June 2021 06:50 (two years ago) link

Definitely looks like American Southwest, but starting to wonder if maybe it's not actually that near the beach.

o. nate, Thursday, 17 June 2021 13:36 (two years ago) link

Eh I don’t think it’s the continental US

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Thursday, 17 June 2021 15:53 (two years ago) link

if that red sign with yellow letters just above the STOP sign on the right is a street name sign, then it's probably not in the USA?

"As of 2009, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) approved color schemes for street name signs including a green, blue, or brown background with white text, or a white background with black text"

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Street_name_sign#Color_coding_and_typography - which also mentions there are exceptions though (burgundy in the Fiesta part of Mesa, AZ? Haven't found an example yet)

StanM, Thursday, 17 June 2021 17:51 (two years ago) link

The street sign background looks more brown than red.

nickn, Thursday, 17 June 2021 18:18 (two years ago) link

i assume a stop sign in puerto rico would say "pare"

StanM already said Hawaii and that has blue bins, similar road markings, red octagonal stop signs, bungaloids as far as the eye can see. Damned if I can narrow it down though.

Pretty sure that's a red golf buggy. Maybe it's near a golf course (at least a dozen in honolulu alone) or maybe someone just likes to tool around in a golf buggy.

but how are these three pictures so... horizontal? Anywere I click on Hawaii has mountains in the background (or I'm doing it wrong)

StanM, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:07 (two years ago) link

Hermosa Beach!

https://goo.gl/maps/VJ3zLtga9o1xchvAA

I thought someone already kind of guessed it, but I guess not formally.

o. nate, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:22 (two years ago) link

Still curious exactly where that first shot was taken though. Such a weird vibe in that photo.

o. nate, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:25 (two years ago) link

Wow! nice one!

StanM, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:28 (two years ago) link

well done to cherry blossom too, you had us following all kinds of wild red goose herrings.

StanM, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:30 (two years ago) link

Yes, I was looking all over the place, but I kept coming back to Hermosa Beach, since the street signs were the right shape and color.

o. nate, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:32 (two years ago) link

lol I was just coming back here to suggest Hermosa having finally found examples of burnt orange streetname signs above the stop signs there.

nashwan, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:35 (two years ago) link

caek mentioned Hermosa! Why didn't we listen? :-)

StanM, Friday, 18 June 2021 16:44 (two years ago) link

possibly because i repeatedly said i don't think this is southern california! haha sorry. and good catch!

π” π”žπ”’π”¨ (caek), Friday, 18 June 2021 16:57 (two years ago) link

the low rise relatively dense vibe feels like hermosa or manhattan beach to me, but they have no k street.

the only coastal k street i can find in CA is in san diego, but it's way bigger than this one, unless this is an alley behind k street.

Picking additional shots when the answer was sitting there already 99% of the way there was tricky!

xp to Stan
It was lost in the other beach towns - Redondo, Manhattan, ...

nickn, Friday, 18 June 2021 17:04 (two years ago) link

I looked on zillow for price estimates and in the original picture, the house on the left (xmas tree) is estimated at $2.3M and the one next door (behind penis umbrella) is $2.6M.

nickn, Friday, 18 June 2021 21:00 (two years ago) link

totally normal state

HWAT, 2.6M!?

StanM, Friday, 18 June 2021 21:04 (two years ago) link

i was thrown by, among other things, lack of green bins. apparently hermosa is still rolling out green bins which i guess makes sense when a lot of them don't have gardens and many of them are neo-nazis https://www.hermosabeach.gov/our-government/city-manager/environmental-programs/solid-waste.

first guess: maybe this is germany. but no obvious major port so not hamburg or bremen. maybe that's a lake then. but this is too nice for berlin (where the lakes are) so my guess is ... potsdam (on the basis that it's next to berlin but nicer and more verdant). general vibe is quite like this but this view has too many churches/towerblocks https://www.360cities.net/image/nikolaikirche-potsdam-skyline and if i'm right i certainly can't find the spot.

Blocky apartment blocks lining wide boulevards did made me think of post-Soviet Europe...

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 04:51 (two years ago) link

there's also a distinct lack of churches which east germany or even further east, although there are some pretty ritzy chateaux type buildings

what's that round black thing with the white roof? football stadium?

StanM, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:11 (two years ago) link

I don't know, at first I thought it was something industrial, now I'm not so sure.

Blowing the photo up, it seems to be the sea on the horizon, then a narrow isthmus of land, then a narrow body of water - lake or head of a river - then the city. I think.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:16 (two years ago) link

Assume so too, but funny place to have one, in a built up area. Which again makes me think somewhere east of the iron curtain.

Zelda Zonk, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 05:22 (two years ago) link

there's a pretty famous one near central london but yeah that does look like it's pretty central in a smallish town which seems weird.
