does it matter?

Paul Ponzi, Saturday, 12 June 2021 18:56 (two years ago) link

Being an AIDS denialist in 2021 is frankly pretty nazish in real-world effect if not necessarily in benefit-of-doubt babe-in-the-woods intent; same for covid denialism really but yes there is the barest straw of plausible deniability to clutch at if you are heavily invested in excusing it

I mean by all means send money to skrewdriver and publicly express bafflement that others might not but

My main takeaway from Eric Clapton trending on Twitter is the surprising number of ways people can misspell vaccine

groovypanda, Monday, 14 June 2021 07:30 (two years ago) link

what a fucking pathetic drama queen, my mum's the same age as him and a cancer survivor and made less of a fuss over the side effects. My partner has MS and was completely debilitated for 24 hours and didn't complain about it. Anyway I just download everything from slsk these days ༼ ºل͟º ༽

calzino, Monday, 14 June 2021 09:19 (two years ago) link

I can't imagine Clapton releasing anything in 2021 that would even be worth the effort of searching for in slsk, let alone actively purchasing.

calzino, Monday, 14 June 2021 13:55 (two years ago) link

IMO it's perfectly fine to listen to Evan Parker and even give him money for his musical work even though he's being a weirdo

eisimpleir (crĂĽt), Monday, 14 June 2021 13:56 (two years ago) link

just because someone is being a gigantic asshole doesn't mean you have to stop buying the things they're selling that you like

Andrew Lloyd Webber, the producer of musicals including Cats, has pledged to reopen his theaters this month “come hell or high water,” telling the Telegraph newspaper that he is willing to be arrested.

been asking for him to be arrested since Phantom, finally!

of course you don't have to, but it's a pretty fair and reasonable option to say fuck 'em and dl their stuff from slsk and boycott their live events.

Maybe it's just me, but while it is extremely disappointing to hear this shit from Parker, having a shitty opinion on COVID isn't quite on the same level as, say, openly espousing Nazi ideals or being a serial sexual assaulter.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 June 2021 14:20 (two years ago) link

Once you fall down the conspiracy theory rabbit hole it's pretty difficult not to end up at least a useful idiot for nazi-style ideologies tho.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 14 June 2021 14:23 (two years ago) link

(xp) And the shitty opinions on AIDS?

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Monday, 14 June 2021 14:27 (two years ago) link

The AIDS ones are even worse, yes. Believe me. I'm not defending Parker on anything, just struck by the idea that the "punishment" folks are proposing for him is the same applied to say, R Kelly or Varg or whoever. I mean, as pointed out multiple times above, it's up to everyone to draw their own line re: supporting an artist and I get it, just interesting to note.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 June 2021 14:29 (two years ago) link

there's definitely an element of "wanting to believe" re: COVID, because the reality seemed initially so terrible to everybody that people wanted to believe a "aw shucks, you got us - we were just foolin'. Society reopened!" around the corner. over time, most of these idiots have probably come to subconsciously realize they're wrong, but in today's thin-skinned "double down" society, nobody will ever admit that.

and then there are just some people who have backwards ideas about medicine to begin with. "those doctors don't know nothing".

aka Jill Stein voters.

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 June 2021 14:31 (two years ago) link

just struck by the idea that the "punishment" folks are proposing for him is the same applied to say, R Kelly

Uhm don't know about anyone else but I think R Kelly deserves far worse punishment than just people not buying his records.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 14 June 2021 14:37 (two years ago) link

I do too! Without a doubt.

I'm talking about the "punishment" that the average music fan can make, i.e. not buying albums or paying to see them in concert.

a superficial sheeb of intelligence (jon /via/ chi 2.0), Monday, 14 June 2021 14:40 (two years ago) link

Once again, the dumbest shit on ilxor where people argue points I'm not even making. So sick of this bullshit tbr and I can't believe I waste time around this garbage.

people are going to draw different lines in the sand for different artists as to where their support begins and ends.

and invariably, people like wins will show up to police said lines in the sand because that's what he does.

seems pretty cyclical to me.

xpost

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 June 2021 14:43 (two years ago) link

Yeah, there's not that many options we have when it comes to that, so a lot of different levels of bad get the same reaction.

xposts uh sorry I guess?

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 14 June 2021 14:43 (two years ago) link

but "not buying their stuff" is a pretty mild thing to do in the end so I think it's fine to be trigger happy w/ it.

Daniel_Rf, Monday, 14 June 2021 14:44 (two years ago) link

the main reason I'm not interested in policing said behavior is because the average person has massive contradictions on the line they draw for when to support someone, I'm not interested in telling someone they're 'overreacting', I'm not interested in saying "you're a bad person for buying this record". just another component of the social media-driven "purity testing" that we seem to do with everybody.

I won't buy albums from Nazis, racists or other people of KNOWN questionable behavior. that's always been my view since people tried to foist Graveland on me when I was first getting into metal.

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 June 2021 14:47 (two years ago) link

This may not be the thread to discuss it, but what is the “motivation” behind AIDS denialism? I’ve never grasped that at any level. Is it basically rooted in homophobia, a desire to see HIV go untreated, etc.?

like a d4mn sociopath! (morrisp), Monday, 14 June 2021 14:55 (two years ago) link

many of them think that AIDS is not caused by HIV, and usually it's because they want to blame the behavior of the sexually deviant or drug users, or the medicine themselves. some of them are alternative medicine kooks that believe all medicine is toxic and evil.

that plague raves article was awful and pretty much ruined my evening after reading it the other night. that said, "plague rave" would be a pretty cool album title/band name/genre descriptor.

tbf it has been over 21 years since he said anything publicly about AIDS (and over 12 years since his one example of HIV not leading to AIDS died of *checks notes* AIDS), it’s possible that he stopped thinking it privately too.

I feel like when you're in one of the most notorious rock groups in the world, and you organize a fundraiser for a destructive group like Maggiore's, and link to them on your website until 2008, you probably owe it to yourself to loudly walk back your earlier support rather than just going quiet and hoping nobody remembers. especially when you may have lead fans to this "AIDS denialism" rabbit hole.

it's not exactly like Peart fellating Ayn Rand in his early 20s.

cancel culture club (Neanderthal), Monday, 14 June 2021 18:14 (two years ago) link

There was an open letter recently: https://48hills.org/2021/05/opinion-aids-denialism-in-the-rock-and-roll-hall-of-fame/

this, 100%

stirmonster, Monday, 14 June 2021 18:29 (two years ago) link

It's definitely preferable!

But there's also a lot to be said for a famous person to realise "oh my god I am a gigantic dumbass, I will stop making public statements about anything other than bass guitar," and doing so. And he might have thought that bringing it up again at any point after the three months he was involved in denialism would only amplify the dangerous misinformation. (Or he might still think it, 21 years later, who knows.)

link to them on your website until 2008,

again tbf: it looks like the "causes" page was created c. January 2001, updated c. October 2002 (the Nader link may have added in between, but the blurb/link about their album being carbon-neutral pins that one down), and as far as the evidence shows, deleted altogether in February 2003 when somebody in the Foos office noticed, or they were doing a routine revamp of the site. This does not look like a site the band were heavily involved with day-to-day.

Good on them for keeping ranked-choice voting advocacy on the list in the apparently-new 2007-08 version, though, and updating the carbon netural link to an active organisation. Sucks if the one member did keep just asking questions about AIDS after March 2000, and it's absolutely terrible that he promoted Just Asking Questions from Jan-March 2000, but there's no clear evidence that he did anything after that.
