i'm taking a break until this nonsense stops and they have a regular host again

Levar's getting one week only, from July 26, if yr intersted

iirc ken is presently some consultant or something

he came on as a consulting producer in September; they've stopped doing his own micro-segments since Alex died tho.

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Saturday, 12 June 2021 09:15 (two years ago) link

I could watch Levar, sure.
based on what I've seen, Jennings should mellow into the role over the next few years and be able to keep the ship afloat.

two weeks pass...

It’s a huge bummer that Oasis is objectively better than Blur.

four weeks pass...

I like how enthusiastic Lavar is when certifying an answer is correct.

Sooooooo, this Matt guy...

Lavar needs a lot of seasoning but his voice and presence are great. i wouldn't be mad.

i've only watched the first lavar episode so far but it bugs me that he seems to be trying to give a dramatic reading to every clue, like he's at a table read.

fact checking cuz, Thursday, 29 July 2021 20:40 (two years ago) link

he dropped the ball several times in the first ep for sure

3 days in lavar wouldn't be in my top 5 guest hosts and it's not really close either

Clay, Thursday, 29 July 2021 22:30 (two years ago) link

Lavar has gotten better.

Matt Amodio tonight was the terminator. Up 40k going into Final Jeopardy and then hit the final for 30k. Yikes. Over 250k... Only really been close in 1 game so far.

earlnash, Friday, 30 July 2021 00:46 (two years ago) link

just fyi all, it's LeVar

I honk along darkened Bobo-doors (Doctor Casino), Friday, 30 July 2021 01:12 (two years ago) link

can't say i'm a fan of LeVar's performative singsong children's show host delivery, but it has been a weirdly interesting pairing with Matt's brutal steely-eyed efficiency

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Friday, 30 July 2021 15:31 (two years ago) link

Dumb move, but I’m guessing this was the plan all along and the guest hosts were to make sure the ratings got goosed for awhile.

Getting the other Michael Richards of Seinfeld and racism fame as the permahost would be a less perplexing decision

bon ivermectin (Murgatroid), Thursday, 5 August 2021 00:27 (two years ago) link

Ugh he was so boring

Mike Richards has a history.

https://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2011/09/price-is-right-model-sues-show-for-alleged-sexual-harassment.html

Lanisha Cole names the producers of the popular game show, Michael G. Richards...as well as their production company, Fremantle Media North America.

Cole began working on "The Price Is Right" in 2003 and by all accounts enjoyed a normal work environment over half a dozen years.

But beginning in December 2009, the situation began to deteriorate when Richards suddenly and inexplicably stopped speaking to Cole and began showing favoritism to another model with whom he was having a relationship, the suit alleges.

According to the court papers, Richards used policies "which never before existed" to limit her modeling work on the show and engaged in abusive behavior.

According to Wikipedia, he was in consideration for the TPIR hosting job (in addition to being a producer) but lost out to Drew Carey, so I imagine this guy has had an axe to grind in the gameshow world for over a decade and now that he gets to call the shots he naturally thinks he's the right man for the job.

Ⓓⓡ. (Johnny Fever), Thursday, 5 August 2021 02:57 (two years ago) link

ugh ugh ugh. he's a perfectly good game show host, which is exactly what jeopardy doesn't need.

this sucks, hope this dude flames out hard and they have to replace him

i can't remember if it was monday or yetersday's game that came disastrously close to only matt qualifying for final jeopardy--the other two contestants were both still in the red with 6 clues remaining--but it made me wonder, has it ever happened before that only one contestant makes it to final?

flopson, Thursday, 5 August 2021 20:05 (two years ago) link

yeah it was yesterday's, it was like 43k to -800 and -300 at the end there lol. and then matt wagered 37k on final jeapordy and got the question wrong!

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 August 2021 20:07 (two years ago) link

Richards would not even be in most peoples top 5 of the guest hosts. Don't know David Faber at all, but he has been better than Richards.

Oh well, my girlfriend called it that he was already chosen going to be the host, they just wanted a bit of separation to allay any complaints.

In hindsight, considering the German migration, I guess that makes sense on the final question yesterday. I guessed French myself for what language was the newspaper to first report the signing of the US Declaration of Independence.

earlnash, Thursday, 5 August 2021 20:09 (two years ago) link

xp- matt's strategy of going row-wise from the bottom made it extra tense too cause there were only like $200 and $400 clues remaining

flopson, Thursday, 5 August 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

i guessed france too but it seemed too obvious to me even as i said it. like how many languages could it have really been? it was basically like a multiple choice question so i was thinking it was gonna go sideways somehow. i'm surprised he screwed it up so badly

J0rdan S., Thursday, 5 August 2021 20:14 (two years ago) link

ya my guess was that it was a benjamin franklin-owned newspaper, and figured since he'd spent time in france...

flopson, Thursday, 5 August 2021 20:14 (two years ago) link

I remember reading one of those "strange facts" things that claimed German was almost made the official language of the US, so I would have guessed German. I doubt the strange fact was true, though.

what a great time to reward an antivaxxer with a giant forum

Ken Jennings shouldn't have talked shit about Blur.

“Heroin” (ft. Bobby Gillespie) (C. Grisso/McCain), Wednesday, 11 August 2021 19:24 (two years ago) link

she changed her mind about vaccines last year (although she still made dishonest statements about her anti-vaxx beliefs)

adam t. (abanana), Wednesday, 11 August 2021 19:39 (two years ago) link

even then she seemed weirdly cagey and equivocal about it. when talking about it she always seems to go out of her way to leave enough wiggle room for ppl who believe in 'vaccine choice' to hear what they want to hear: "although a lot of people have good & real reasons to be skeptical of big pharma/childhood vaccination schedules/etc, here's why I have chosen this based on my own personal research", etc.

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Wednesday, 11 August 2021 20:20 (two years ago) link

like she did a 10 minute video about how shes not antivax, but still somehow managed to scrupulously avoid saying 'everyone should go out and get the COVID vaccine which is very safe and effective'

"Hey, we know most of you are disappointed with the choice of Mike Richards to take over for Alex Trebek. We hear you. That's why we are going to make it even worse by selecting one of the few guest hots you really didn't want to see again. Also she might be anti-vaxx? Thanks for watching."

I mean, I guess we should be happy it wasn't Dr. Oz?

like,

And when he hosted, he qualified it by saying he was only doing because Covid protocols/restrictions prevented them from getting a celebrity guest host right away after Jennings did his six weeks.

gonna say it one more time: shoulda been jennings.

I really, truly did love Robin Roberts in the spot, but I don't get the vibe that she actually wants to swing her career that direction. Too bad, because she was great.

Few of the guest hosts were outright awful (I didn’t watch Dr. Oz, but because he is awful as a human being, I assumed that carried over into Jeopardy hosting duties). Roberts, Guthrie, Burton, Whitaker and Jennings were my faves. Hell, Joe Buck is even doing ok, and I can’t stand him on baseball broadcasts. Aaron Rodgers struck me as robotic, and I don’t get why he was apparently a frontrunner. Richards was a non-entity, and I assume will continue to be.
