she sounds even better now that she's shifted away from the high vocal affect she used to do

i will never stop listening to this

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 02:58 (two years ago) link

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 03:00 (two years ago) link

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 03:01 (two years ago) link

oh that's a shame! i just saw that she was opening for them and thought 'wow that seems like a dream brad combination'

i think i'm just going to keep this on loop all day, she really understands exactly what i want out of metal it's incredible

ufo, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 03:02 (two years ago) link

oh wow i didn't dream that this came out

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 9 June 2021 12:50 (two years ago) link

she knew what we would like to eat for sure

ufo, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 12:51 (two years ago) link

Poppy's one of those contempo artists where everything's about streaming, so it's SO FUCKING HARD to work out how to buy her music, especially in FLAC.
I'd love the EPs on CD, but that ain't gonna happen (blessed that I got I Disagree on CD though!)

Found it:

This exercise is particularly difficult in Australia...

raven, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 13:39 (two years ago) link

i was just about to point you there, 7digital/zdigital etc. is about the only reliable place for FLACs or even mp3s apart from bandcamp for artists who use it these days, now that google play music is dead

ufo, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 13:41 (two years ago) link

Yeah, thanks @ufo. Glad I remembered! It is where I usually end up.

raven, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 13:43 (two years ago) link

Oh, yes, this EP. She's Charli XCXI. I was going to say Charli XXX, but that's obviously Ayesha Erotic.

glenn mcdonald, Wednesday, 9 June 2021 20:43 (two years ago) link

"say cheese" song of the year at this point

ufo, Friday, 18 June 2021 06:28 (two years ago) link

This EP is really the best? I didn't really get her earlier stuff because they all sounded like two or three unrelated songs mashed together, but this is brilliant from start to finish.

braised cod, Saturday, 26 June 2021 20:55 (two years ago) link

the only previous track that i'd say really felt like a bunch of different songs mashed together was "concrete" but it did so in a really fun way that worked

poppy goes belly.... incredible

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Wednesday, 30 June 2021 16:52 (two years ago) link

Am I reading too much into lyrics or is "Her" a fuck-you/goodbye ode to Titanic Sinclair?

Sucks it's kind of bland, especially against the backdrop of that EP

octobeard, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 17:02 (two years ago) link

"Produced by Justin Meldal-Johnsen" !!!

ufo, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 23:01 (two years ago) link

this is fine but nowhere near as exciting as the EP

have no objection to a JMJ-produced alt rock album on the way from her though?

ufo, Wednesday, 30 June 2021 23:04 (two years ago) link

Liking this better than the EP stuff but then again I'm more into 90's MTV alternative nostalgia than processed metal.

licorice oratorio (baaderonixx), Thursday, 1 July 2021 14:54 (two years ago) link

the EP heavily tapped into my love of the downward spiral

ufo, Thursday, 1 July 2021 14:55 (two years ago) link

three weeks pass...

from my understanding she has been recording or has recorded an album with justin meldal-johnsen and it will largely sound like "her"

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Friday, 30 July 2021 04:59 (two years ago) link

it's decent but the vocals sit in the mix really weird

not expecting the album to be as good as EAT but it still should be enjoyable

ufo, Friday, 30 July 2021 05:01 (two years ago) link

sounds like metric

this one's really pitch perfect 90s alt-rock pastiche. fine but i already really miss when she was exciting only a few months ago lol

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Friday, 24 September 2021 04:32 (two years ago) link

between this and the new deafheaven this is a great year for metal drummers slumming it on alt-rock records

"hysteria" song of the year

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Friday, 24 September 2021 04:41 (two years ago) link

"never find my place" is pretty with teeth

this album is good but still kinda pales in comparison to EAT

ufo, Friday, 24 September 2021 08:51 (two years ago) link

love the way the black metal blastbeat bridge of "on the level" keeps threatening to take over the song

STOCK FIST-PUMPER BRAD (BradNelson), Friday, 24 September 2021 14:13 (two years ago) link

I will never understand this board's fixation with Poppy.

Poppy roxx ... not much to understand

i regret not being more fully behind it earlier, i liked it theoretically before i realized i liked it for real

Send "Lessen the Damage" to the "Good 4 U"-loving teen in your life

Guayaquil (eephus!), Friday, 24 September 2021 18:12 (two years ago) link

I’d say if I have a reservation it’s that there’s something a bit conventional abt the songcraft which is extremely strong but I kind of wish it had a few more traces of the aggrieved/extreme tendencies that gave it such early shock factor

xheugy eddy (D-40), Friday, 24 September 2021 21:09 (two years ago) link

*aggro not aggrieved

xheugy eddy (D-40), Friday, 24 September 2021 21:15 (two years ago) link

yeah this album is solid but ultimately its alt-rock pastiche is just less exciting than her previous pop-metal stuff which was a much more distinctive niche

ufo, Saturday, 25 September 2021 00:40 (two years ago) link

I don’t mind the mainstreaming It just feels a hair too fast to me

xheugy eddy (D-40), Saturday, 25 September 2021 02:33 (two years ago) link

I love the records (esp "I Disagree") but the gratuitous mispronounced Japanese lyrics are cringe

assert (matttkkkk), Saturday, 25 September 2021 04:57 (two years ago) link

Really like this new album. I feel like I both agree and disagree with deej's comments above, in that:

1. Yes this is less distinctive/surprising than the earlier stuff

2. Her specific current vibe, which out of laziness I will just call "Eight Arms To Hold You", is (a) a vibe that I really connect with, probably more than her previous sound once novelty is set aside, and (b) one which requires stronger songwriting than her previous approach in order to sustain, and I think she rises to the challenge accordingly

3. "Stronger songwriting" is relative and as she becomes hookier she risks inviting comparison with other hooky artists whose hooks may more memorable than hers, though I need to sit with this longer to decide just how memorable they are. I revisited Sky Ferreira's album shortly afterwards, and at this stage of preliminary assessment I'm not sure anything here tops "Boys" or "You're Not The One" or "Heavy Metal Heart". But I might change my mind in a day or two!

Tim F, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 08:23 (two years ago) link

i don't think the hooks are stronger on this one than on i disagree

ufo, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 09:01 (two years ago) link

that’s correct : I think the songwriting is better, and (separately) the style she is working in now places more pressure on the hooks to perform, but neither of those things necessarily translate into the hooks being better.

Tim F, Tuesday, 28 September 2021 09:52 (two years ago) link

I’m not so much concerned with her needing to be hookier, I do think *some*thing is lost in just visceral intensity (beyond shock factor) which isn’t to say it’s not replaced by something equally valuable … I don’t consider this a fall off by any means, just kind of mourning a future that never was
