There are the intermediate posts too—where you make a claim that isn’t quite what you mean, but not quite not what you mean. Like, a suspension of qualifiers, a calculated risk to push the conversation forward. There is maybe a mischievous humor in such posts.

irony is way too often portrayed as being the opposite of or mutually exclusive with seriousness and sincerity, which has had devastating consequences for our collective understanding of the phenomenon. it is or should be far more interesting than that

inferring irony due to one's limited and mistaken perceptions can certainly be seen as ironic, but given sufficient thought a trickle of irony can be squeezed from virtually any utterance.

assuming irony has an on/off switch, what % of your posts is it turned on for?

assuming every post contains some % irony, what is your average?

I'm going to answer this later, but I think everyone answering in this thread should provide an examples of themselves being earnest or ironic so we can tell the difference going forward.

Being ironic:

what many people fail to understand is that when critical thinking skills erode, they do not disappear. rather, the eroded particles of critical thinking are blown or washed away to other locations, where they collect in loose agglomerations, such as critical thinking skill dunes or the deltas of critical thinking skills deposited at the effluence of rivers.

― sharpening the contraindications (Aimless), Monday, May 3, 2021

Also ironic:

Yes. Children should especially learn how to pick our crops. Since they are already low to the ground they are ideal for picking lettuce, strawberries, cucumbers and similar edibles. Their job site would be open air, they'll get lots of exercise, and they'll learn every day what it feels like to be devalued, exploited and abused. Invaluable lessons to carry them through their miserable lives.

― What's It All About, Althea? (Aimless), Monday, June 7, 2021

Not ironic:

If you liked to eat fish every Friday, would you feel the need to claim you were converting to Catholicism when you weren't? It might raise some embarrassing questions about why you never seem to attend mass, or confession, or take communion, or even learn the catechism. Why not just say you want to eat fish?

What's It All About, Althea? (Aimless), Thursday, 10 June 2021 01:30 (two years ago) link

The last one is a humorous analogy. I don’t know the contexf but there is likely hyperbole at work, whatever you’re complaining about is not exactly like converting to catholicism to eat fish. Seems ironic and droll.
