This happened one street away from where I live (though we're out of town at the moment). I have no words.

It's really horrifying. I'm still a little in shock.

it's so sad

symsymsym, Tuesday, 8 June 2021 18:33 (two years ago) link

I really believe our media and institutions let the 2017 mosque attack be minimized and get swallowed up by smug collective Canadian amnesia

symsymsym, Tuesday, 8 June 2021 18:36 (two years ago) link

Fucking depressing.

Of course Rex Murphy takes the opportunity to tackle the issue of anti-white racism.

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Tuesday, 8 June 2021 19:12 (two years ago) link

This fucking country

Hongro Hongro Hippies (Myonga Vön Bontee), Tuesday, 8 June 2021 19:17 (two years ago) link

Really sickening and maddening incident.

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Tuesday, 8 June 2021 19:18 (two years ago) link

Such responses are not just a Quebec problem, alas.

pomenitul, Tuesday, 8 June 2021 19:18 (two years ago) link

Surely not, although Maxime Bernier did eagerly share Murphy's column. Tbf, Khilanani does actually seem like a piece of work but this was a guest lecture at a university in the US that was afterwards condemned by the Yale School of Medicine (who hosted it) itself, as well as prominent faculty members; even people on the Critical Theory reddit seem offended by her ideas. I suppose it's fair for Murphy to comment on whatever strikes him as worthy but I guess it seemed glaring that this was what seemed like the most pressing issue to him at this moment.

somehow missed that the entire Greens leadership was feuding over their Israel stances. This post by their sacked advisor Zatzman is hilarious, to me:

Zatzman responded with a Facebook post stating that Greens "will work to defeat you and bring in progressive climate champions who are antifa and pro LGBT and pro indigenous sovereignty and Zionists!!!!!"

symsymsym, Thursday, 10 June 2021 17:54 (two years ago) link

leaving the greens to join the liberals over israel makes no sense.

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 10 June 2021 17:57 (two years ago) link

even the ndp is wishy washy over palestinian rights

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 10 June 2021 17:58 (two years ago) link

the logic seems to be that being the Liberal candidate in New Brunswick in an election this year is the only way she'll keep her seat. but yeah if she's trashing Annami Paul for being mealy mouthed about Palestinian rights, just wait until she meets Justin Trudeau

symsymsym, Thursday, 10 June 2021 18:29 (two years ago) link

I support the NDP's platform resolution of opposing arms trade with Israel and not doing business with settlements, but yeah I don't think Jagmeet's heart is really in it

symsymsym, Thursday, 10 June 2021 18:31 (two years ago) link

great message going into the fall election

Remove the Catholic Church's tax exemption imo.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:02 (two years ago) link

the anglican church was also a part of this, so protestant churches should also bear some of the brunt of it

Punster McPunisher, Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:13 (two years ago) link

At the very least the two main protestant churches of Canada apologized decades ago.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:18 (two years ago) link

apologizing means accepting blame, can't be doing that!

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:20 (two years ago) link

and more than half of these schools were catholic.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

An estimated 6,000 children died while attending these schools, due in large part to the squalid health conditions inside.

Close to a thousand graves at just two schools...

jmm, Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

yeah.

seems hard to imagine what the figure would be when accounting for all the disappeared

《Myst1kOblivi0n》 (jim in vancouver), Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:23 (two years ago) link

Canadian gov. should kick the door open of the churches and seize all the books in my opinion. Wouldn't be surprised if something from the judiciary happened in the next few months.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:34 (two years ago) link

Considering there was 80 schools. At the current rate, it would be 40 000.

sure. the canadian gov't also "apologized" years ago. the truth has been out there for years; "known secret", etc. while that was needed, apologizing really means very little. there needs to be a lot more repercussion and a lot of change

this is a good start:

http://www.trc.ca/assets/pdf/Calls_to_Action_English2.pdf

from: http://www.trc.ca/about-us/trc-findings.html

Punster McPunisher, Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:47 (two years ago) link

That's why I wrote 'at the very least'.

In my experience working with First Nations and Inuktitut for almost two years now, apologizing means a lot.

I would imagine 95% of ILX boarders are very well aware of the TRC's calls to action, findings and shortcomings.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 24 June 2021 17:57 (two years ago) link

it is #58 out of 94 on the list. in that list, it is a small portion of the things that need to be done by all organizations that had a hand, it doesn't matter how many, in these kinds of residential schools.

Punster McPunisher, Thursday, 24 June 2021 18:01 (two years ago) link

I haven't come across a single FNIM is saying only apologizing is nearly enough. But for a lot of them, it is an essential part of the healing.

Van Horn Street, Thursday, 24 June 2021 18:05 (two years ago) link

I mean, tax all the churches. End public funding for Catholic education. What the fuck is that shit anyhow?

Yay, accelerated second dose bookings just opened for all Ontario adults today and I managed to book for later this afternoon. That definitely beats waiting another three months.

Not really sure what to make of this story: https://nationalpost.com/news/politics/commons-speaker-intends-to-ask-court-to-strike-down-government-lawsuit-challenging-parliaments-right-to-know

On the one hand, Parliament should probably maintain its supremacy. Otoh, it seems like the reasons for the firing are clear enough - is the Opposition actually disputing this?

I really was fine with waiting (until late August), but it felt like there was a very vocal push to get you to reschedule, so between that and this Delta variant--of which I've now heard one end of the should-I-be-worried? spectrum to the other--I got it moved up to mid-July.

clemenza, Tuesday, 29 June 2021 23:54 (two years ago) link

I realize that's not the most sensitive thing for a Premier to say but, in practical terms, what sorts of things could the provincial government have done about a heat wave?

Sequel to Sadness (Sund4r), Wednesday, 30 June 2021 00:02 (two years ago) link

funding cooling centres, communicating the possible dangers earlier...the deaths seem to be a result of underfunded and overexerted emergency reporting services, which is a failing of government. not something that could have been fixed in a week of course.

I think calling for an inquiry into what went wrong would be appropriate right now. Not downplaying a death count that is in the still being tallied.
