My least favorite argumentative technique I see online is the one where someone makes a reasonable and fairly straightforward request or suggestion, only to have someone respond by suggesting that they actually meant a blown out of proportion version of that request taken to a ridiculous extreme that tries to paint the original poster in a bad light. It’s a shitty, Fox News way of reframing a discussion to put someone unnecessarily on the defensive and it drives me batshit to see it, even on ilx, as often as I do.
