I'm pretty much through this now. Horrible times but never got worse than flu for me. As a decades-long smoker it could have got a lot more dangerous, I guess.

I hope you two get better quickly, and I'm sorry about your cat.

Glad to hear you're feeling better, emil.y!

Completely anecdotal but someone who works in healthcare was telling me that smokers do seem to get through it a bit better than non-smokers. Something to do with their lungs being a toxic environment for the virus? Anyway, great to hear that you're on the mend emil.y!

building a hole (NickB), Tuesday, 8 June 2021 21:31 (two years ago) link

yeah, I'd heard that too about smokers, pretty early on, and like lots of things, the effect of Ibuprofen, covid toe et al, never really heard any substantial follow-ups.

Josh in Chicago, Friday, 30 July 2021 01:18 (two years ago) link

you have been repeatedly posting about how many places you’ve gone unmasked, including enclosed spaces, across several states, for a couple of months iirc?

get well hopes and good wishes to doc c and stevie d and any other ilx0rs!

Don't be a dick. I could be wearing a mask 24-7 and still be worried I have it with no symptoms.

i believe that!

Tracer Hand, Friday, 30 July 2021 03:45 (two years ago) link

wait JiC has posted while not in chicago!?

two months pass...

I got diagnosed with covid on Saturday and have been in bed since. I feel like shit to be right honest - throat, cough and exhaustion. I'm double vacced and can't help but wonder what it would have been like without it.

I'm a secondary school teacher. I've been in contact with so many people who've had it, it's kind of a miracle I lasted this long I guess?

Lily Dale, Tuesday, 12 October 2021 13:38 (two years ago) link

Thanks everyone.

I've still got my senses of taste and smell, so that's something. Just utterly, utterly exhausted. Bleurgh. So far, my wife and kids are clear so that's good too.

I loved the government guidance: use a separate bathroom; sleep in a separate wing of the house; don't use the same butler. I'm only partially exaggerating.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Tuesday, 12 October 2021 13:52 (two years ago) link

Yesterday was the hardest day since the positive PCR on Saturday. Just utterly, utterly exhausted in a way I've not experienced before. I feel slightly better today and have actually made it outside. Assuming this is going to be around for a while. Ugh.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 14 October 2021 14:43 (two years ago) link

You’re at least halfway through it. Hang in there.

Tracer Hand, Thursday, 14 October 2021 15:31 (two years ago) link

Get well soon Chinaski, my girlfriend is also going through a breakthrough infection. She got over the tiredness after a couple days but she lost her sense of taste and smell and has a lingering cough.

And of course the worms! (Boring, Maryland), Thursday, 14 October 2021 16:01 (two years ago) link

more difficult than I look (Aimless), Thursday, 14 October 2021 20:11 (two years ago) link

Thanks for the kind wishes.

And you're right Aimless - I'm obviously legally housebound at the moment but liable to take off into the woods at the first opportunity and overdo it. Today, I just laid in a blanket and looked at the clouds.

By the by, I was thinking that my urge to move is so total most of the time, that I rarely reach that desireless baseline (bassline) of consciousness that simply is. Shame it needs a lethal virus to remind me, but there it is.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Thursday, 14 October 2021 20:33 (two years ago) link

Feeling much better, finally. Still knackered but the constant headache has passed and coughing/sneezing minimal. One weird corollary: I've never had two weeks off in my working life (nothing more than a couple of days here and there) and I feel like a fraud and that I'm stitching up all my work colleagues who have to pick up the slack. Sure, what goes around comes around and all that but it's a horrible feeling.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 09:23 (two years ago) link

?? You’ve had the novel coronavirus!!

I hope some of the experiences upthread were helpful. It must feel so good to be done with those headaches. They are really debilitating.

Tracer Hand, Wednesday, 20 October 2021 09:49 (two years ago) link

Yes, welcome to the club, Chinaski! Glad to hear to you are on the mend.

I've been reading back through the thread and it makes for an interesting document.

I wonder if I am marked somehow; if people will pass me in the street and, consciously or otherwise, prickle, shrink or bridle. I want some of the glasses from John Carpenter's They Live, just to see if there is a warp in the play of light around the fallen: the auratic equation, dazzled or dampened; a new sharpness in the penumbral glow... (This way to the new age thread ->)

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Wednesday, 20 October 2021 11:20 (two years ago) link

Okay, it is confirmed: I'm carrying the Vid within me.

I had a leftover Abbott home test from an earlier scare (good to have on hand, though maybe not super reliable) which tested positive. I was not caught off guard as I was starting to feel pretty crummy. Went down to my HMO (Kaiser) on Saturday and got the real test (drive-up), the results came in this morning.
Pretty sure this is my second infection, I had something in March 2020 with the exact same symptoms, right as the Bay Area was becoming an epicenter (while I was riding public transport daily, and nobody had started wearing masks).

I've had/am having cough, chills, congestion, and a mild 'fever' which never got above 100.8*. I also have the weird sunburn feeling across my back and shoulders that some folks have reported. I don't have that great a sense of smell anyway, but I can smell fresh coffee, whisky, and not much else.

Fortunately, I'm pretty well stocked with groceries, but I wish I had bought more TP on my last trip out. My GF and friends have offered to drop stuff by, I'll be okay... just already bored stiff, I usually like to go for a long walk after work.

Oh, and I had a single dose J&J in April.. was starting to shop around for a booster, I guess I waited too long.
