to complete the glitch/minimal/drumz masterclass that have been the Mayer/Akufen/Bugz CDs i keep asking Fabric for a Hatcha mix. they're having none of it though.

martin (martin), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 10:43 (nineteen years ago) link

why not a mack 10 mix
or carnage

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:31 (nineteen years ago) link

mac or mack

anyone goign to eskimo dance in notts then?
nuff akufen

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:34 (nineteen years ago) link

A Target, Carnage, Wonder or Terror mix would be heavy still.

martin (martin), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:36 (nineteen years ago) link

Ambrose I think that's fair for Akufen but not for Herbert - stuff like his remix of Motorbass's "Ezio" (from '96!) is voluptuously programmed, not garage true but not metronomic house like Akufen either.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:40 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah thats true, generally his remixes are more banging. that motorbass one is rude. but that maybe more down to the bassline. a shit hot bassline can often obscure weak ass beats.
in both cases though i think (ok to qualify my statements im talking about around the house/bodily functions herbert) its mainly the Kicks that just arent tuff enough.
If you try mixing them in with somemore straight up house or techno you find that akufen (ok my way)often gets obliterated.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 11:53 (nineteen years ago) link

tuff beatz, you simply can't, erm, beat 'em.

martin (martin), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 12:26 (nineteen years ago) link

i don't even really see albums like bodily functions and around the house as club records made for mixing, tho, so the "weakness" wouldn't bother me if, indeed, i believed it existed.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Herberts first EPs, vols 1-4 are way more dancefloor. tougher beats but less interesting musically.

martin (martin), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:11 (nineteen years ago) link

hmmmm house music to me is primarily dance music.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:12 (nineteen years ago) link

no way, man!! herbert's "100 lbs" album is great. though the remixes comp is better than everything.

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

x-posto

vahid (vahid), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:14 (nineteen years ago) link

but it doesn't have to be, ambrose, and bodily functions really isn't. it's just a good album, made to be listened to as an album. herbert's remixes are a lot tougher, because they are made for clubs. his albums are made for the home or the headphones, same to a certain extent w/ akufen.
btw, re akufen, can i just say that i'm really really bored hearing akufen continually compared (mainly unflatteringly) to todd edwards, yes, parts of his programming are quite similar (pat yourselves on the back, you are all very clever, but he does admit this debt and always has done so he kinda stole that thunder) and there is easily as much difference as similarity between the two.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:23 (nineteen years ago) link

yeah the main difference is Akufen has more than one idea. unlike todd "self parody" edwardzzzzzzzzzz...

martin (martin), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:28 (nineteen years ago) link

i love todd edwards, btw, but don't see him as being someone who continually, and rather lazily, *has* to be dredged up as soon as akufen is mentioned.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:30 (nineteen years ago) link

And the mix he did (of pretty much all his own stuff, as per policy) for the recent Pure Garage 'Four To The Floor' comp is ace

glad to hear this as i've been meaning to pick it up. the last time i went to tower i had it in my hands, but i bought something else instead (they had those depeche mode singles boxsets on sale).

the edwards christian thing is completely overt, but i can't think of music that is more flat-out euphoric.

tricky disco, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:30 (nineteen years ago) link

also, not that anyone is disputing this, i think herberts dj-ing is vastly different than akufen's. track selection alone will tell you that.

tricky disco, Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:35 (nineteen years ago) link

er dave.. "house music to me" = "what i want out of house music", not "house music IS". but yeah its linear quality just doesnt do it for me. i like bodily functions and my way but i just get frustrated by both artists seeming (ie the way it seems to me, not an indisputable fact) to dedicate all their concentration on the sounds they use that flesh out their tracks, rather than the percussive bare bones of the tunes. i'm just not into such (what i regard as) myopic micro-processing at the expense of an overall groove.

re todd edwards. im not that familiar, but it does seem as though he has a 12" out every few weeks, and i find it hard to distinguish between all his prolific output. As a result I decided to buy 'shut the door' (this is the classic, right?) and be done with it.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:46 (nineteen years ago) link

ambrose, i understand that - our opinions differ. there's no problem. i sometimes like to take a less functionalist approach to house music, as this way i get to enjoy a lot of different stuff without thinking "it's not going to go bang-up in a club, ergo it's not what i want". i like different things at different times!!! still this is a more interesting way for this thread to go than the usual format for threads mentioning akufen, so keep it up by all means.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:53 (nineteen years ago) link

AKUFEN!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

TODD EDWARDS!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

ZZZZZZZZZ!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 13:54 (nineteen years ago) link

isnt akufen playing at fabric sometime? he played paris coupla weekends ago, maybe hes over for a bit.

ambrose (ambrose), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

he's over in the very near future ... can't remember when

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 14:11 (nineteen years ago) link

yo martin you really should be pushing for a target fabric mix

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:00 (nineteen years ago) link

I must stress here that I don't think ALL of Akufen's stuff is particularly Edwardsy, just My Way and some of the Perlon stuff. Battaglia OTM re: Akufen live--that performance was pretty acidy w/o actually sounding like acid, if that makes any sense. And I can see some Herbert comparison but not as much as other people. Anyway, my sense is that My Way was a phase and that his next record will sound much different, if that show as anything to go by.

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:45 (nineteen years ago) link

i almost always prefer akufen remixing someone else to his own productions

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:53 (nineteen years ago) link

I need to hear more Akufen remixes of other people, obviously. strongo, what do you recommend?

Matos W.K. (M Matos), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:54 (nineteen years ago) link

the craig david ("what's your flavor") remix is like dem 2 after snorting a couple pixie sticks, and the massive attack remix ("special cases") is surprisingly subdued. i have a soft spot for the "nag nag nag" remix, but it's pretty gimmicky.

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Wednesday, 23 June 2004 21:55 (nineteen years ago) link

"i almost always prefer akufen remixing someone else to his own productions
-- strongo hulkington (dubplatestyl...), June 23rd, 2004.

Why you always gotta be the turd in the punchbowl?

but akufen usually does (except for some wankier remix tracks) balance the micro sampling with groove and most of the time he uses funk bass lines.

haha yeah sorry guy i've never seen here before i will do my best to adjust my tastes accordingly for you

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:19 (nineteen years ago) link

xpost, if it matters

strongo hulkington (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 24 June 2004 00:20 (nineteen years ago) link

Wise strategy, Wrongo.

Julio down by the schoolyard (Da ve Segal), Thursday, 24 June 2004 01:45 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah but isn't it annoying how all the funk basslines on My Way sound identical???

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 24 June 2004 06:29 (nineteen years ago) link

they don't!!!

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:09 (nineteen years ago) link

you should also check his stuff as anna kaufen - he's done some wicked, admittedly skippy, but seriously bouncy tracks that work like a dream in club sets, precisely *because* they're so punchy and propulsive - and yeah jess, they do mix fantastically with dem 2 et al.

Dave Stelfox (Dave Stelfox), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:11 (nineteen years ago) link

Yeah Anna Kaufen stuff is more club-friendly.

All the basslines on the "Deck The House"-ish tracks on the album sound like they were played on the same bass preset.

Tim Finney (Tim Finney), Thursday, 24 June 2004 08:30 (nineteen years ago) link

"nd that his next record will sound much different, if that show as anything to go by."

uh oh if his next record is anythign like the last live show I saw of his, then we are in trouble. granted, that was in a tate lecture room, and we were all sitting down, but it was limpid rubbish, just a lot of wishy washy ambient preset noises, and some dead cheesy water running samples and those silly jungle bird calls last heard on Enigma and every Bukem tune ever. IT was meant to be music for hsi friends unborn child, lets hope he keeps it on a private basis....

and dave yeah i second the anna kaufen idea. that are like the 'club' akufen. well the one 12" i have is decent.

and well, if when you are talking about the 'funk bassline', you mean 'deck the house', then that is the most pussy bassline ever. i remember everyone on ILM raving about it when it came out, but it is totally lame. like, it would be ok, but its so polite. Pump it up man, you released it on 12", you want it played in a club so just tweak the levels or something! i mean, honestly. maybe he shoudl have released it as anna kaufen ,then he would have had license to properly beef it up.

the senor coconut track is embarassing

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:06 (nineteen years ago) link

why do some people just have to be wacky?

benito mussolinington (dubplatestyle), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 01:06 (nineteen years ago) link

that's a hell of a question to ask here!

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:08 (nineteen years ago) link

you don't have to be crazy to post here--but it helps!!! smile

s1ocki (slutsky), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 02:14 (nineteen years ago) link

Actually this is a really good cd. It flows nicely. And tiny little 8 inch jack is genius.

Jacob (Jacob), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 04:09 (nineteen years ago) link

i really like that sr coconut track (well, the sieg uber die sonne mix), but it's really out of place on this disc, especially the placement it's given. akufen is actually a very good dj, but the way the coconut track comes in makes it sound like this mix is in fact digital.

philip sherburne (philip sherburne), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:01 (nineteen years ago) link

Why this huge persistence on what isn't right on My Way, when the three Psychometry twelves are all brilliant, and the Quebec Whorehouse possibly the greatest microhouse track?!

___ (___), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:25 (nineteen years ago) link

otm about that perlon release. also "the unexpected guest" = one of my favorite moments about superlongevity 2

tricky disco, Tuesday, 29 June 2004 14:40 (nineteen years ago) link

but the way the coconut track comes in makes it sound like this mix is in fact digital

i heard he did it in traktor somewhere. in fact i think it was a bit of promo copy for the cd but now i can't find it.

vahid (vahid), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 16:16 (nineteen years ago) link

why do some people just have to be wacky?

This is Akufen for me. Maybe I'll get this mix though, and give him a chance.

Ronan (Ronan), Tuesday, 29 June 2004 17:27 (nineteen years ago) link

and the Quebec Whorehouse possibly the greatest microhouse track?!

that ep for me defines the whole genre and negates any arguements about akufen tracks not working in clubs. no bassline and yet the whole ep TOTALLY causes it on the dancefloor every time. i'm on my third copy.
