But that isn't funny because it's shocking or dangerous (it's not) - it's funny because it's a gerbil embarking on a mystical quest inside a gay leather slut's ass.

miloauckerman (miloauckerman), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:01 (twenty years ago) link

That post didn't mention anything about being dangerous or shocking. Maybe the postee finds that South Park is the only show who's sense of humor is as bizarre as their own.

xpost my thoughts exactly

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago) link

Effing dud, Milo. You're describing a setup - no setup is
inherently funny. The humor is all in what you do with the material.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:03 (twenty years ago) link

no you're just making with the crazy talk. In comedy 90% of the time the setup is the only thing funny. (the onion to thread)

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:05 (twenty years ago) link

also, the lemmiwinks ep was funny as fuck, thanks to Trey & matt doing their version of those shite 70's folky pop songs from the Rankin Bass Hobbit...

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:07 (twenty years ago) link

Oops, the Onion's ouevre IS the headlines, really.
Just like bumper stickers, there's no setup or punchline
in that short form.

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:18 (twenty years ago) link

whatever. setups can be inherently funny. i'm willing to bet the vast majority of comedy begins with a funny setup, and is then fleshed out in order to fill up the appropriate amount of time/pages.

oops (Oops), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:22 (twenty years ago) link

Squir-Po (if I may call you that), you are so "Humor-ist".

latebloomer (latebloomer), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:24 (twenty years ago) link

Well, there are a lot of ways to do great comedy, I couldn't
deny that. But for me, South Park falls direly short in every
aspect.

So I decided to flip on the new episode, thinking that maybe
I'd been unfairly dismissive...

...nope, this IS shit.

"Never date a man with only one credit card. He probably doesn't spend much,
or even worse, it's a debit card. Four credit cards is kinda fishy...so what's
the perfect number of credit cards? Two! That's Right!"

"Boxing is a man's sport...when you're boxing, you're man at your most man.
So just reach inside for that most man part."

This kind of pap passes for comedy in some circles? And why have
we seen the teacher's wife crash & burn ten times and counting?

Squirrel_Police (Squirrel_Police), Thursday, 8 April 2004 03:51 (twenty years ago) link

wow Squirrel you're right. it's not funny at all. and to think how wrong i've been in my laughter and enjoyment of this show for so many years.

Thanks for opening my eyes!

The first few seasons of SP were mostly shock humor and not that good. Somewhere around the movie they stopped fucking around and decided to turn the show into a strongly moralistic show, where the message is "people need to stop being such fuckwits and act a little more human" and it became golden. Seasons 5 & 6 are the best so far. The new season has been a bit weak so far but still worth watching. Best episodes include "Scott Tenerman Must Die", the Butters episode, the LoTR parody (goddamn that's a good one), "Red Sleigh Down", and, in a completely different vein, "Kenny Dies." [/geek]

The only thing I ever enjoyed about Ren & Stimpy was the line "It's better than bad, it's good!" The artwork was hideous (whereas SP is total eye candy).

I loved the one with Cartman's Dawson's Creek lunchbox - the 2001 parody!

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:35 (twenty years ago) link

"I..can't let you do that..Kyle"

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:35 (twenty years ago) link

the lord of the rings parody one is fucking amazing. i think the series before the current one is pure gold

the surface noise (electricsound), Thursday, 8 April 2004 09:39 (twenty years ago) link

The Halloween episode with Korn as the Scooby-Doo gang was pretty fucking hysterical, too.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:09 (twenty years ago) link

i still hold "Not Without My Anus" as the best thing they've ever put on television.

here's a buncha quotes from the show, for your reffing pleasure

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:41 (twenty years ago) link

The LOTR one was just pure unadulterated genius. ESOJ OTM.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:44 (twenty years ago) link

"Trapper Keeper" is the best episode. It parodies about a dozen different sci-fi movies in the space of 21 minutes.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:44 (twenty years ago) link

wtf was up with that episode i saw recently where they start turning into Simpsons-style cariactures as well, incredible

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:45 (twenty years ago) link

It parodies about a dozen different sci-fi movies in the space of 21 minutes.

as did the masterful 'Deep Space Homer'

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

hmm, well maybe just The Right Stuff, 2001 and Planet Of The Apes

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

also, the "Children of the Corn" ep was a good mashup too, of Thunderdome, Star Trek, and the Stephen King flick.

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, the LOTR one was just amazing - you can really tell that the guys are fans. I think that the show is *very rarely* shocking for the sake of being shocking, and I could name dozes and dozens of hilarious SP moments that don't deal with gross-out humor or shock value AT ALL. Funnily enough, while the accusations of "lack of heart", cheap gags and overtly cynical outlooks don't ring true for me concerning "South Park" AT ALL, they do pretty much sum up my thoughts on the shows that ppl here have trotted out as being superior ("Ren & Stimpy", "Beavis & Butthead")

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:46 (twenty years ago) link

Mongolians attacking the city walls in the child abduction episode reduced me to tears.

Ricardo (RickyT), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:50 (twenty years ago) link

I've seen bugger all since series 4, and I'm gutted. It's on so late now, like 1am or something. I'll buy the series five DVD box when it comes out.

Sick Nouthall (Nick Southall), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:51 (twenty years ago) link

wtf kingfish, "Not Without My Anus" is the worst episode they ever made! Terrance & Philip are probably the closest that SP has come to being guilty of what its detractors accuse it of...I mean, the anti-canadian humor was done much better in the movie and in "Red Sleigh Down", and Saddam's had plenty better appearences, too, so what do you have left after that? Also, maybe this is a cultural thing, but I've never understood exactly what T&P are supposed to be a parody of.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:53 (twenty years ago) link

Also, maybe this is a cultural thing, but I've never understood exactly what T&P are supposed to be a parody of.

T&P were designed to be everything that the show was originally accused of being; nothing but "fart jokes & bad animation," as Trey & Matt have said repeatedly in episodes.

the Not Without My Anus was killer for me in that it was the most bizarro/non-sequitor thing they've ever done. They were also proud that they got the Canadian National Anthem on twice on american tv within 22 minutes.

Kingfish Balzac (Kingfish), Thursday, 8 April 2004 11:59 (twenty years ago) link

The live action ad in the middle of the Cherokee Hair Tampons episode is one of the funniest things ever.

Andrew Farrell (afarrell), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:02 (twenty years ago) link

ren and stimpy season one >>>>>>> all south park ever.
No. The genius of Ren and Stimpy can be summed up in 6 cartoons: "Stimpy's Invention" (the Happy Helmet); "Black Hole"; "Space Madness"; "Son of Stimpy" (...and it made as souuuunnnnd!); "Yak Shaving Day"; and the "All Kids Love Log" spots.
Now, granted, these individual 'toons are brilliance that will never be exceeded by anyone...anywhere...ever, but sadly, if you put all of that on a VCR tape, and you have slightly less than 1 hour of entertainment. And it's all the Ren and Stimpy you'll ever need.
Nothing else in the series measures up.

South Park on the other hand, has had its ups and downs (the "You Got Served" episode last night was kind of lame) but has had episodes that come close to brilliance. Such as the LOTR parody, or their satire of The Passion.

Lord Custos Omicron (Lord Custos Omicron), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:07 (twenty years ago) link

More non-sequitor than fighting the frizzies? More bizarro than Niblet, Mecha Streisand, Russel Crowe's tv show or TOWELIE??? NWMA almost feels like it was made to be so tedious and flat on purpose, our anger over not knowing who Cartman's mom is thus being enlarged by outrage over how crappy what they're showing us instead is...which is funny conceptually but, you know, not much fun to sit through.

They were also proud that they got the Canadian National Anthem on twice on american tv within 22 minutes.

Now that truly is cool.

Daniel_Rf (Daniel_Rf), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:11 (twenty years ago) link

i guess the problem here is that people are highlighting South Park's all-out parody episodes, which whilst hilarious are perhaps 'obvious' in their sending-up - does the nature of their parodies not seem a bit laboured? as in 'The Simpsons and Family Guy do this so much we better had too'? I mean one of South Park's biggest strengths is when they have a simple but effective story that's just poking fun at the nuances of life, childhood, hypocrisy among adults and mis-interpretation rather than any direct spoofing of movies. Same goes for the other shows there too though (a big reason why King Of The Hill is so great - they avoid the spoof gimmick, which has been done to death in animated series really).

stevem (blueski), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:12 (twenty years ago) link

That would be the "Simpsons did it" episode

And Lemmiwinks is back next week, apparently

ModJ (ModJ), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:19 (twenty years ago) link

stevem is almost OTM; many of their parody/homage shows are ridiculously great, too.

The "You Got Served" episode was weak (way to underutilize the guest stars, guys), but really anything was going to be weak after the Passion episode. Also, I now think Butters is one of the greatest characters ever conceived for television.

VengaDan Perry (Dan Perry), Thursday, 8 April 2004 12:32 (twenty years ago) link

Yeah, the LOTR one was just amazing - you can really tell that the guys are fans.

This is very high on my 'to watch' list. I'm patient these days, though.

oh and also, yeah, south park. it's funny.

i'm always amazed with how quickly they come up with their funny. something happens and the next week you've got a hilarious south park episode dealing with that something.

Once this show got over trying to be shocking for shock's sake (sometime in the first season), it was pretty damn great. One episode that had me in tears from this season: the goth one. Easy target but so dead on and a great use of Air Supply. Anyone know whether the goth song they used in the bedroom scene was a real song or just a great spoof?

Vinnie (vprabhu), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:38 (twenty years ago) link

The Passion of the Jew was unfunny.

'Child Abduction Is Not Funny' is one of my favourites ever, especially the Ghost of Human Kindness (GOHC: Do you think you can learn to trust people? Tweek: I...I guess so. GOHC: Good, now why don't you let me give you a lift home in my van...) and the whole GODDAMN MONGORIENS thing.

The Ninja one and the Special Olympics one are two of the funniest I've seen. Butters is just like the most relentlessly tragic cartoon character ever, he's like Ralph Wiggum times a million.

ferg (Ferg), Thursday, 8 April 2004 14:46 (twenty years ago) link

x-post - I love the goth kid who contemptuously flicks his hair out of his face every seven seconds the entire time he's on screen.

that episode was fuckin' awesome. Truly Butters is a god

The only thing I ever enjoyed about Ren & Stimpy was the line "It's better than bad, it's good!" The artwork was hideous (whereas SP is total eye candy).

the art wasn't pretty, but the animation was a hell of a lot more expressive (and funny) than SP's bland computerized cut-outs. i agree that the first season was the only good one, but that's because nickelodeon fired john kricfalusi and replaced him with slugs corporate dolts who didn't understand cartoons. it'd be like saying "roadrunner cartoons sucked because they weren't any good when chuck jones wasn't making them anymore."

I stopped watching regularly ages ago, because it got tiresome, particularly the "fight a big movie monster" story template they were always relying on. But still whenever I flick past it there's something funny being said. I'm just tired of the voices, I think (and people talking in the voices in real life. Please stop).

anthony kyle monday (akmonday), Thursday, 8 April 2004 18:04 (twenty years ago) link

South Park's limited animation style (which they occasionally show they're not limited to: see the LoTR episode or perhaps the recent "playing with weapons" one) is actually more expressive because of its limited vocabulary. It's, you know, it's almost like an Ozu movie or something.

The Passion episode wasn't that good -- I was expecting more.

AKM, they don't use that schtick very often these days (compared to the first few seasons).
