Um also he hasn't actually read much 70s Black Panther. As I understand it the reason the Kirby storyline was controversial is that it replaced an ongoing storyline by Don McGregor in which the Panther fought the KKK - in America.

I wouldn't press/argue this point too strongly, but would mention that (IMO) the history of Asian representation in Marvel comics – as opposed to recent controversies involving the movies – is more slightly complex than implied in that HuffPo piece, or the Gizmodo article linked therein (cf. Shang-Chi, for starters).
