holy 2001, batman

quickest diminishing-returns record of the decade so far?

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 June 2003 15:49 (twenty years ago) link

I've still never heard it. Does it suck? Has it "dated"? Loved his mix cds.

I got it last year and have listened to it a dozen times at least and still can't tell you what it sounds like.

i think there's about 4 tracks on it which hold up, and "number one" is still a great single. but so much of it sounds like "ric astley sings and plays your ze records favorites" to me now. subpar songs is most of the problem.

hardly diminishing returns jess, what with output records etc etc etc. wasn't this quite ahead of the game in terms of dfa etc etc?

speaking of this has anyone got the Colder record on Output

haha, actually I just remembered the way I discovered ILM (or more accurately, Freaky Trigger) was googling on in after getting and loving the Party Mix, looking for writing about it and finding Tom's review - a really great bit of writing.

i just realized that i really haven't liked anything trevor jackson's done after about 6 mos: the album, the party mix, the dj kicks record

jess (dubplatestyle), Thursday, 12 June 2003 16:14 (twenty years ago) link

Just about the same situation here. I only play Party Mix when it's for a friend; it's still fun to listen to through her/his ears. I just listened to DJ Kicks for the first time in quite a while -- after almost a year of no play -- and it still excites me in certain spots. I haven't felt the urge to listen to the proper album in quite some time.

DJ Martian was praising that Colder album on his blog

I'll always love the DJ Kicks mix for "The Sky Is Not Crying" - can't argue with that track!

I also think that "Medicine Man" seems curiously underrated as a track. I never really clicked with the Playgroup album initially, so whenever I do pull it out I actually enjoy it slightly more.

one year passes...
Been playing this a lot recently. Rowetta is on it! Can't get too much of Overflow, there's a wonderful moment towards the end where a synth line comes in deep in the mix with that exact same wintry tone that New Order used on the likes of In A Lonely Place and The Him.

Hmm. I wonder if I would like this or not. I'll give it a try.

So Jess what do you think

Wow, I missed that connection somehow -- so this is the Underdog guy, eh? That explains that really great version of "Films" on the Numan tribute album he did...

ordered a 2 * 2cd set of all the underdog remixes (most unreleased), and this version is indeed rathergood.

of course the remix of "Vicious Circle" by Alex Reece adds loads of "Vicious Games" by Yello into the mix.
bloody fantastic stuff.
