(which may be the dark horse that most of the non-proggers vote for here....)

Automatic thread bump. This poll is closing tomorrow.

ILX System, Monday, 1 September 2008 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

I choked and finally decided to vote. And I went with the wardrobe song.

GEIR IS ON THE MOTHERFUCKING MONEY HERE

FUCK A "SONG" JD

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 03:51 (fifteen years ago) link

I will listen to this album right now because I'm sick of saying I will listen to it. I think I'm afraid of it.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 05:54 (fifteen years ago) link

"I know what I like", although I hate how Collins mugs it up with the tambourine dance these days when they do it live (or well, did, I guess, I dont imagine they'll be doing any more tours).

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 06:17 (fifteen years ago) link

Trayce is up in this bitch, I love it.

Bimble Is Still More Goth Than You, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 07:05 (fifteen years ago) link

Heh you can thank me bf for that, he's a massive Genesis/Gabriel fan and got me into all this stuff.

Trayce, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 08:57 (fifteen years ago) link

It's between Dancing and Firth...going with the former.

Joe, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:55 (fifteen years ago) link

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE STOP AWKWARDLY SLOTTING THE WORD 'POLL' IN THE SUBJECT OF POLLS. ONE DAY I WILL MAKE A POLL ON THIS ALBUM AND PEOPLE WILL FLAME ME BECAUSE THIS ONE EXISTS EVEN THOUGH IT'S IMPOSSIBLE TO FIND BECAUSE THE ALBUM TITLE IS ALL BOLLOCKSED AND I WILL CRY AND WHEN I CRY BABIES IN AFRICA DIE.

Autumn Almanac, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 11:58 (fifteen years ago) link

which is the trance-like song here? which goes beyond? which has this synth(?) theme where i used to think this would be the perfect moment where the world could stand still? it hasn't got a lot of lyrics. is it "firth of fifth"?

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:14 (fifteen years ago) link

i think so. "battle of epping forest" was quite similar but rather annoying iirc.

alex in mainhattan, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 14:17 (fifteen years ago) link

"Battle of Epping Forest" is the worst song they ever wrote and I'm including "Illegal Alien" there. Not the stuff with that brickie on vocals tho.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 15:06 (fifteen years ago) link

Cinema Show. But my actual favorite parts are the opening of "dancing" coupled with "aisle of plenty", I think that tune and the lyrics are pretty haunting.

Oh no it isn't!

Mark G, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 18:50 (fifteen years ago) link

Including "I Can't Dance", Noodle Vague?

(I usually skip from "Firth" to "Cinema Show" TBH but I've been thinking I should give "Battle" some consideration next time.)

Sundar, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 19:37 (fifteen years ago) link

Ach, I was exaggerating as per usual. It is a right clunker tho, maybe tuning out the vocal would improve it.

Noodle Vague, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 19:38 (fifteen years ago) link

Automatic thread bump. This poll's results are now in.

ILX System, Tuesday, 2 September 2008 23:01 (fifteen years ago) link

Correct winner :)

five months pass...

so obsessing about this album at the moment, moreso than any time since i first heard it when i was 9... Firth Of The Fifth would be my choice, though it grew live, and love the version on Seconds Out, and circa bootlets

are the parts in "battle of epping forest" about the literature student homophobic?

kobaïas fünke (clouds), Tuesday, 25 November 2014 18:39 (nine years ago) link

j0hn is so wrong about this upthread!

akm, Tuesday, 25 November 2014 20:00 (nine years ago) link

Did anybody see the documentary about them that's currently running on Showtime? It's good. I wish there were more live Lamb Lies Down on Broadway footage. It looks insane, in both a good and bad way.

You can tell Peter Gabriel and Tony Banks hate each other.

kornrulez6969, Wednesday, 26 November 2014 00:04 (nine years ago) link

i didn't watch it because Hackett was so angry about it. tony banks seems singularly impossible to like.

akm, Thursday, 27 November 2014 01:29 (nine years ago) link

you can look up Musical Box Lamb Lies Down concerts, they're as authentic as it gets, and yes they're pretty insane, particulary when you consider the time.

akm, Thursday, 27 November 2014 01:31 (nine years ago) link

Didn't like this record 25+ years ago, and not enjoying it any more now either. Dunno if w33d would help, even.

Sir Lord Baltimora (Myonga Vön Bontee), Thursday, 27 November 2014 05:25 (nine years ago) link

"Cinema Show" should have won this, one of my favourite ever Genesis tunes. Banks' extended solo at the end is just magnificent. The version on Seconds Out actually trumps the studio version for me.

rising stones cross (anagram), Thursday, 27 November 2014 08:54 (nine years ago) link

so far "firth of fifth" has been my favorite since finally hearing the album. those organ chords are so damn majestic.

kobaïas fünke (clouds), Thursday, 27 November 2014 16:26 (nine years ago) link

i'm also inordinately fond of "after the ordeal" -- the closing section reminds me vaguely of the end of some rpg.

one month passes...

what an amazing album, so many great songs. my fave has always been "the battle of epping forest". there is a metaphysical quality to tony banks keyboard play all over the album but especially in that song around the 4 minute mark. additionally it goes into so many different directions, stops and starts again. almost like a roxy music song.

it's the distortion, stupid! (alex in mainhattan), Thursday, 15 January 2015 14:34 (nine years ago) link

how did Cinema Show not walk this with a huge margin

I? not I! He! He! HIM! (akm), Monday, 7 August 2023 19:05 (eight months ago) link

second half of Cinema Show is so damn good, only thing is I think the version on Seconds Out actually rocks harder
