ditto on Thomas Leer and Robert Rental's the Bridge. Originally on TG's label industrial, should be easy to order the CD online. The record vacilates between slightly more accessible stuff dominated by either Leer or Rental, and amazingly beautiful ambient/industrial noisescape type stuff.

You know what? I cannot find my CD of Cluster '71 and this bothers me an awful lot. I am not the sort of person to lose CD's and now I'm trying to figure out if I sold it for some reason. What the hell might I have been thinking? It's not fair.

whats the most accessible TG record for a novice?

When I was a TG "novice", I found 3rd Annual Report in a used record store. I had never heard of them, "industrial music", or anything more outre than Echo and the Bunnymen. I bought it 'cause the cover kinda puzzled me, and I wanted to know what the hell the "report" was. And it was only $2.

Naturally, the album confused the hell outta young me -- a sensation I later realized is rare and to be savored -- but I didn't immediately sell it back. I thought that 3AR was all just a bunch of awful disorganized noise...or was it? 20 spins later, I was totally addicted, not only to the record, but to confusion.

Sonic Youth got it mostly right with the title, Confusion is Sex, but not quite. Confusion is enjoyable and worth much pursuit, but you need to take a big enough hit to get your trip on. Thus, confusion = MDMA.

Don't work your way into TG via 20JFG. It's a great record, but it's what a friend of mine used to call a "tasty 1/2-hit". It's not enough to really hurt your brain, and if you take another tab later in the night, it's gonna be a waste. Go for the gold. Pack your bowl tight with TG bud, not the TG shake-n-seeds product.

Of course, none of this applies if your pantry is already stocked with Masonna CDs. However, I'd presume that, just like an aficionado of 70s Chicago soul will be already quite familiar with James Brown, no lover of noise ain't gonna already have a good handle on TG.

Shoes say, yeah, no hands clap your good bra. (goodbra), Sunday, 4 June 2006 17:56 (seventeen years ago) link

Early 80s Dark electronic "pop"

the first psychic tv album and their second, "dreams less sweet," are total classics i think. they later became a very different band.

Michael J McGonigal (mike mcgonigal), Sunday, 4 June 2006 21:11 (seventeen years ago) link

Seconded, Mike.

Also seconded: Coil, SPK (early), Pink Dots, Neubauten.

also that early Lustmord CD on Dark Vinyl, can't remember the title right now.

sleeve (sleeve), Monday, 5 June 2006 02:06 (seventeen years ago) link

Get thee one Leichenschrei by SPK. More consistent than any album TG put out, but just as baffling & unnerving. Einsturzende's Drawings of Patient O.T. and Halber Mensch are worthy companions as well.

"In The Nursery" from Dreams Less Sweet was probably the last time Genesis truly sounded like an escaped mental patient...

I'm currently listening to 'Luke The Drifter' by Hank Williams. Excellent album from a true original. I'm not pissing you about, I just thought you should know what someone who was there is 'now' listening to.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Monday, 5 June 2006 19:25 (seventeen years ago) link

Nice piece Shoes. It was a little different for me, I'd picked up the buzz on them early on, but couldn't figure out what that would sound like until I bought 2nd Annual Report. I can still sense the disorientation and mental confusion it created way back then. I found myself having to question everything around me as it shifted the reality perspective several notches off the dial. I'm not a fan of nostalgia love-ins but I like to think that those getting into it today as an 'innocent' will develop an interesting route through life. It had that impact on me, but then everything was up for grabs back then.

whats the most accessible TG record for a novice?

When I was a novice, the one that got me into them was "Heathen Earth". I bought it out of curiosity - it looked weird & interesting, didn't get it at all at first, but something kept me coming back & listening to it again. Soon enough, it was one of my favourite records.

For more music in a similar-ish vein, I'd go along with whoever suggested Coil, as well as (early) Cabaret Voltaire.

Pashmina (Pashmina), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 09:26 (seventeen years ago) link

Early Cabaret Voltaire. "Cluster '71". Faust. Tangerine Dream. Stockhausen. Robert Rental & the Normal, "Live at West Runton Pavilion". Hawkwind, "Space Ritual". Early SPK. Early Neubauten.

i find jg thirlwell (jim foetus) to always be fun and interesting. try 'scaping foetus off the wheel". in my opinion it's his best, esp. 'i'll meet you in poland".

R.Kane (arcane), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 15:03 (seventeen years ago) link

Heh! 'Scraping Foetus Off The Wheel' used to be one of my favs. Has it stood the test of time, I might look it up again?

I'm intrigued you include 'Space Ritual' Dadaismus, definitely the rest.

tolstoy (tolstoy), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 16:14 (seventeen years ago) link

"Space Ritual" = weird electronic noises + repetition + bare breasts

Who Are You... The Nerve... I Wanna Get Out, I Wanna Get Out (Dada), Tuesday, 6 June 2006 16:29 (seventeen years ago) link

i think 'hole' by scraping foetus off the wheel has stood the test of time. in fact, 'clothes hoist' sounds better to me now than it did in '84.
