I saw a live performance by her on the spanish channel, and I thought the song she played was pretty good.

According to Tiddy's girlfriend, she's considered to be Indie in Central America - she's their Bjork or something. Also, she yodels like a Tibetan throat-singer [male] and that lyric about her breasts = the funniest pop lyric EVER!!!!!4

Shakira is the result of horrid genetic experiments where Christina Aguilera was cross-bred with Dolores O'Riordan. Who buys this shit? Anyone would think there was no quality pop being made when a song this bad actually becomes a hit.

EdwardO, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

shakira's been around for a while, at least since 95 - i think her label bosses wanted to try the ricky martin crossover...it's worked, but for how long, ewll, who knows?

QUeen G, Wednesday, 6 March 2002 01:00 (twenty-two years ago) link

Shakira was never indie ever, she was already selling a lot in like 95 or 96 that thing of she being independent and not-pop is just shit from teh US media

Anyone would think there was no quality pop being made when a song this bad actually becomes a hit. don't forget most charts aren't based on sales but on radio-play. there is plenty of quality pop being made.

seven years pass...

"Nevertheless, there's a slightly patronising assumption that her more abstruse lyrics – She Wolf's "I'm starting to feel a little abused like a coffee machine in an office", or the deathless line from her English-language breakthrough hit Whenever, Wherever about how lucky she is that her "breasts are small and humble so you don't confuse them with mountains" – are the cack-handed efforts of a woman struggling to express herself in a language she doesn't entirely grasp."

id actually say its more just like someone writing in english with the characteristics/inflections etc of their first language. as well as her obv just being a bit strange (in a really nice way) lol.

besides patrick wolf, you mean? lol.

she wolf is pretty good on first listen. shakira melds with the neptunes much better than i'd expect her to (or do they meld to her? unsure). it's less evidently ambitious than oral fixation was...or at least smaller in scale. no songs arguing with god or ranting about east timor or the travails of celebrity - not much epic fluffy love either. mostly it's a lot of sex. fiery emancipated desire in a sort of frank way that we haven't heard from her before. not exploitative really, but aggressive and organic to where she's at, perhaps? hard to distinguish.

'gypsy' is the only one that doesn't really fit the template and it's lovely and interesting production-wise, but feels out of place on the album. still a highlight (tho).

'Did It Again' is a stormer that they really should release in north america instead of that timbaland crap-fest, and 'Mon Amour' is a great crazed revenge/break-up song. Up there with Si Te Vas, Objection (Tango) and Don't Bother on the list of "great songs where Shakira acts like a total mentalist."

"Passengers with destination to Hell...Please proceed to your gate, we are ready to board now."

fwiw i have enjoyed watching shakira's transformation from a 16 year old lol alanis morrissette wannabe (pies descalzos) to weird britney clone (laundry service) to vocab-spouting she wolf. i feel like i've watched her grow up. i was in colombia when she made her breakthrough in 96, and i'll tell you what -- "estoy aqui" still gets plenty of radio time even 13 years later. she's HUGE. love her.

Will her next single be titled "Loda"?

That article is pretty cool and has me interested in the next album, but it just writes off the last one as "too mainstream." As much as I loved Loba the song I never listened to the full album. Anyone here fuck with it?

Arab Idol singer Mohammed Assaf says he has been banned from singing at the opening of the World Cup 2014 in Brazil and that the Colombian singer Shakira has decided to boycott the ceremony in protest at the ban,

Assaf, a Palestinian living in Gaza Strip, wrote on his social network page that he has just been notified about the decision cancelling an agreement with him to sing at the World Cup, which will kick off in June.

“I have been banned from singing at the World Cup opening in Brazil by some countries and parties which I do not know,” he said, according to the Saudi daily Sada and other regional newspapers.

“This decision has prompted Shakira to apologize from singing at the ceremony,” he added without giving further details.

Lots of collaborators on her new album (Maluma, Prince Royce, Nicky Jam), which started with one

“The creator inside of me was in desperate need of attention. But also my 2-year-old was in the same need. The person, the mother, the creator — all of those little Shakiras were fighting inside of me, so it was very tumultuous.”

The turning point came last year as Shakira revisited her Colombian roots. The songwriter Carlos Vives, who has had hits across the Spanish-speaking world with songs based in Colombian traditions like the accordion-driven vallenato, sent her demos for his next album. Shakira heard duet possibilities in a song, and the musician in her got to work.

Listened to the new one. It's uneven but I lean toward liking it, more than disliking it. She mainly sings in Spanish but sings a bit in English. A number of cuts have a pop-reggaeton feel to them. On the tracks I dislike, Shakira's vocals are too adult contemporary meets 90s pop sterile.

I really liked La Bicicleta when it was out, kinda goofy but a fun song. Will give the record a listen for sure

I know nothing about Carlos Vives though, will have to listen to some of his other work, anyone got any recommendations where to begin?
