Saint Vitus - C or D?

Good guitarist (eventually two) and a coupla good tunes, but that's about it. One of the things that made Black Sabbath great was the mobile Butler/Ward shythm section, it wasn't just Iommi. Vitus music didn't seem to move, just sort of plodded along, or maybe it was just recorded that way. I liked Wino better than the original singer, but not much.

Good point, which is why "Burial At Sea" and "Born Too Late," as songs, are good. They don't count on drums, which do plod along, but in these cases the plodding adds a little (at least it doesn't subtract) because the melodies are so lugubrious.

The live record gave the drummer a chance to do things on a few "faster" things -- meaning up mid-tempo for most people -- about one third of the time. It surprised me. That along with a good performance of "Born to Late" keep it from being sub-mediocre.

Always wanted to like them, but the rhythm section killed it for me. Spirit Caravan were so much better. Lots of points for the line "I have things living in my hair" though.

pdf (Phil Freeman), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 18:00 (eighteen years ago) link

I agree with you Phil. Spirit Caravan were far better and more consistant. I liked their EP a great deal and the remake of The Obsessed's "Kill Ugly Naked" which wasn't Vitus-like. By the time I saw them, they were stuck playing some dive called the Martini Lounge on the rim of Hollywood (or the Melrose district?) about six years ago and Wino was professional and accomplished, but the show didn't have much spark. Not enough people in the place was part of it.

Wino also has a way with certain two word combinations. There is a song on the Vitus live CD where he sings out in his best declamatory style "wretched place!" What wretched place? Where wretched place? Who cares, sounds good.

"icy skull! rusty claw!"

(that's the obsessed, tho')

el sabor de gene (yournullfame), Tuesday, 16 August 2005 23:13 (eighteen years ago) link

El Sabor's got it! If you hear it, you know it, it rivets. It's a Wino trademark, a money shot that unfortunately earns little money, but it a great hard rock move. The two word, three syllable declamation - the Wino "2/3" law! It's a seriously abbreviated haiku-like thing.

Each to their own and all that but SV, to me, remind me of the period when SST went all wrong

i should maybe delve Herman? I would appreciate yr recommendations. I perhaps caught them at the wrong time

Fer Ark, Wednesday, 13 August 2008 22:51 (fifteen years ago) link

Well there's a few era's. Maybe you would prefer the wino era? Mind you the 1st Self Titled is one of my faves. But id say maybe try Born Too Late? or possibly V. I think liking Saint Vitus depends on whether you like doom metal or not. I can see how they pissed off all the hardcore punks :)

So apparently there is going to be a Vitus reformation show at Roadburn in Holland next year.

That is pretty cool.

The Slash My Father Wrote (DJ Mencap), Friday, 26 September 2008 15:32 (fifteen years ago) link

Everybody hates it when I say this but my favorite Vitus record is Children of Doom with Christian Lindersson on lead vox. He's got a great voice and there are some really great songs on that album. They never plodded harder than "Planet of Judgement".

Plus Don Dokken produced the album (in a totally weird reverb-drenched way).

I am very tight with Wino (I booked most of the Hidden Hand tours). Love the guy to pieces but I think his era with Vitus was their weakest. The Reagers shit was classic underachiever doom.

Wino's best work was to come later with Spirit Caravan and certain periods of Hidden Hand.

I really like Children Of Doom!

Saint Vitus drummer Armando Acosta died the other week. We have Joe Carducci's remembrance with a lot of details of recording their early albums in the New Vulgate.

Its good, but I can't help but feeling slightly disappointed with only 34 minutes and two tracks being just instrumental pieces (good ones at that, mind you, but still).

Finally getting to hear the new record in preparation for seeing them Friday. First off, it sounds amazing. Clarity and heft, and though Wino is way up front as always it doesn't take away the power of the band behind as it does on some of the 80s records. However, there isn't a lot of meat on the bones. A short record, and not incredibly memorable despite being recorded so well. Maybe it'll grow a bit more over time, but I'm a few listens in and waiting for the earworm. I do expect the songs will work well live mixed in with the classic material.

Agreed. The Hidden Hand, also, was much stronger musically and lyrically than St Vitus. Wino's other bands essentially do the same thing but better. Especially the lyrics and riffs.

moley, Thursday, 18 October 2012 23:20 (eleven years ago) link

Definitely disagree. Vitus trumps all those other bands. CLASSIC.

Dave's interviewed on the You Don't Know Mojack ep about Thirsty and Miserable. Good interview but apparently Season of Mist fucked them on the last album and he's not happy with them generally. Always seemed like an odd fit tbh.

they also shared this amazing Naomi pic shot at the same time as the EP cover

Kind of wild that they had an album that came and went last year with nary a mention on this thread. It was really, really grest.

Chief Kyiv, Friday, 3 April 2020 15:11 (four years ago) link

in that interview Dave says the label didn't do any promo at all and refused to put it out in time for their scheduled tour. don't know what that's about, but it is a really good album that deserves attention.

That was a really good album. I feel really lucky to have seen them on the tour before that - they opened for Down and Anselmo (I know, I know) came out to sing "War Is Our Destiny" with them.
