im really surprised that one's posted one of britney spears' many forays into this genre. but i suppose thats like beating a dead horse, eh?

Fuck, I hate that vogue for women who are obviously not metallers wearing metal t-shirts. To wear a metal t-shirt you should have to be fifteen, male and smelly.

Wooden (Wooden), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 18:14 (nineteen years ago) link

I'd love to see Hilary Duff and Lemmy do a duet, actually. At the end of the song, he kills her with his Rickenbacker.

Actually, so do I.

La Monte (La Monte), Wednesday, 15 September 2004 20:09 (nineteen years ago) link

I've talked about this before, but, when I was living near Brooklyn, I made it a point to go up to Brooklyn hipster model types wearing 'ironic' metal tees and act like some crazy fan. I'd go up to a girl wearing a Dio shirt and throw up the devil horns and do my best Beavis "Liiiike a rainbooow in the daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaark!" When I didn't get the reaction I wanted I'd proceed to ask them questions about the band - "What's your favorite song?," etc etc. Good fun.

I do the same thing with the Von Dutch bitchasses. Especially the boys. "Excuse me, do you have any idea who Von Dutch WAS?" Fucking idiots.

One should be required to take a test--or an oath of loyalty--before wearing anything!

yeah, yeah, ha, ha and thrice ha. But let's face facts -- wearing a band/concert t-shirt is generally perceived as a declaration of fandom. Sporting, say, a "vintage" Sacred Reich t-shirt when one is not a Sacred Reich fan makes one a dishonest, disengenuous dick. Full stop. Moreover, being that the classic black metal concert t-shirt was formerly the calling card of the social pariah (cast out due to his/her "weird" tastes and failure to adhere to arguably more accessible fare), the appropriation of same by whistle-headed, blonde cheerleader types is an unacceptable insult to those who paid the price of unpopularity for their fandom. Is nothing sacred?

Looking at Alex's picture above:

Isn't Shania Twain married to Mutt Lange?

Or put another way, isn't it potentially credible that living with the guy who produced the album that the shirt she's wearing promotes might mean she's heard it?

sundar subramanian (sundar), Thursday, 16 September 2004 06:09 (nineteen years ago) link

Provided that someone had actually been to a gig by the relevant band / artiste, it would be alright for them to wear one of that band / artiste's t-shirts then 'though, would it?

I'm wondering in particular how (just for example) certain Killing-Joke-loving, NYC-living ILXors would feel about The Corrs wearing Iggy Pop shirts, since it might appear that they could claim sort of entitlement to do so with impunity?

Stewart Osborne (Stewart Osborne), Thursday, 16 September 2004 07:15 (nineteen years ago) link

Shania came from small-town Canada, which probably meant that she DID grow up on a steady diet of country and metal, esp AC/DC. Whether her husband was involved with 'em or not.

A friend of mine swears that Donnie Wahlberg is wearing a bauhaus t-shirt in one of the New Kids on the Block videos.

Pup. E. Dawg (rocknrolldetox), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:00 (nineteen years ago) link

My former roommate used to have a Soul Asylum shirt that had "Can't Feel the Beating" in the Coca-Cola font. What if Shania wore that?

Pleasant Plains (Pleasant Plains), Thursday, 16 September 2004 17:01 (nineteen years ago) link

A friend of mine swears that Donnie Wahlberg is wearing a bauhaus t-shirt in one of the New Kids on the Block videos.

No, it's Jordan Knight, and he's wearing the Bauhaus t-shirt with the still from "The Cabinet of Dr.Caligari" on it. Stranger than fiction. Peter Cetera (sp?) of Chicago wears a "Bela Lugosi's Dead" t-shirt in the video for "You're the Inspiration". In both cases, it was probably a stylist that picked it out, but...y'know,...ya never know. Maybe NKOTB and Chicago are closet goths.

Really thought there was more pushback against this thread at the time - maybe that happened on an adjacent thread?

I think the pushback happened later, this thread being part of the general reaction against.

I'm sure my tale of how Alice got her Ramones t shirt is up there someplace.

Anyway, put it this way.. I have a Moondog t-shirt it's very nice. Nobody has asked me to name any tracks or anything. If they did I'd go I dunno.

The reason I have it is because I contributed to a kickstart to make the definitive profile movie. Its my reward.

Mark G, Sunday, 10 October 2021 07:24 (two years ago) link

Ah, anagram, thank you, you are correct. And Mark, you should listen to more Moondog!

In context, Dave M. was obviously being facetious re making hot celebrities take off their shirts, surely? It might have been a crude (?) joke but it wasn't an elitist one and he was spoofing the thread. Slightly further down, he posted this:

why can't we just accept this as eye-candy, not to mention attractive people of both sexes unwittingly giving free advertising to our favorite bands? would you rather see Shania in a Ramones t-shirt than see her wearing a big honkin' Coca-Cola logo? or worse, a tour shirt featuring one of Mutt Lange's OTHER proteges, Mr Anti-Can-Con, Mr Everything I Do (I Do It For You), Have you ever really really really really really really really really ARRRGH#Q(#W)R*

emil.y, Sunday, 10 October 2021 13:50 (two years ago) link

Hm, I guess, given the overall context (where he was admitting he himself didn't know some of the bands and then made clear that he didn't have an actual problem with this), I had seen it as better-intentioned but I'm giving him the benefit of the doubt bc I knew him then. I respect your pov and don't want to be Capn-Save-a-17yo-Post; I can see why it could land differently for someone who has faced those attitudes.

Then I saw it was on Honest Jon's label, ie the shop around the corner where I was employed at that time.

Seemed a bit daft to just buy it there and take it home all that way.

Anyway, when the film does come out, and I get my dvd reward, I'll come to his music fresh.
