Cash Money - the definitive S/D

I like everything from UNLV through the 2nd Lil Wayne record (the really early stuff is a little too lo fi). After that only "Hood Rich" is necessary. "Real Big" is also good though the more I think about it the more over Cash Money seems. So I'll stick with my golden age. The new millenium obv belongs to Lil Jon and David Banner.

400 degreez is a total classic.
Flossin Season, Ghetto Children, Gone Ride With Me, 400 deg. and OF COURSE Ha and Back that Azz up are ALL STARS.

Forksclovetofu (Forksclovetofu), Monday, 13 September 2004 05:38 (nineteen years ago) link

Lil Wayne's Tha Block is Hot is fantastic, esp Loud Pipes (does hiphop get any more outrageously shiny & blingtastic?), Fuck tha World (funniest sad rap song ever), Lights Off (another beautiful sad song, sad because the clique has KILLED YOUR WHOLE BLOCK), Remember Me
And I really disturb myself by getting a kick out of Kaisha's lyrics. I should be ashamed

love Juvenile's Tha G Code too. Thankyou Jess for going on & on about it

Keith McD, Monday, 13 September 2004 08:44 (nineteen years ago) link

U Understand from Tha G Code was sort of my household's theme song for a while. "get the fuck." has become part of our vernacular because of it. The last track 'Guerrilla' is really eerie and atmospheric. It's my brother's favourite Cash Money song. He's not usually a fan; he's into improv and sound art

Keith McD, Monday, 13 September 2004 08:48 (nineteen years ago) link

cash money could do no wrong between 97-00. search EVERYTHING.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:26 (nineteen years ago) link

but esp.: lil wayne - "shine", "high beamin", "tha block is hot", loud pipes"

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:27 (nineteen years ago) link

destroy intermittenly thereafter; i'm beginning to realize i don't like jazzee pha as much as everyone else seems to.

jess (dubplatestyle), Monday, 13 September 2004 09:28 (nineteen years ago) link

How many times have we done this thread now?

Personally, if you're talking about albums, i think CMB albums were at their most unlistenable 97-00.

Here's what i wrote about UNLV if you're interested: http://governmentnames.blogspot.com/2004/08/headed-2-da-classics-vol-1.html

Currently my favourite CMB song is "Cash Money Millionaire" by Lil Wayne off his new cd, it's really dense and melodic and has this disgusting fat keyboard noise that sounds like the devil talking. And Lil Wayne is a really nice rapper now.

scg, Monday, 13 September 2004 10:18 (nineteen years ago) link

"4 Minutes" =most slept on Cash Money track. Actually, Project English has a few great cuts on there, but overall it's a big disappointment.

Midnite_Vulture, Monday, 13 September 2004 18:40 (nineteen years ago) link

scg we haven't done it at all - we've done various threads on Cash Money but never a good search-and-destroy one.

I like what you wrote on UNLV - thanks a bunch.

Not to ride the fence or anything but I'm somewhere in between Jess and scg on this one....I certainly don't think CMB were unlistenable from 97-00! But they did have their fair share of shit tracks. Most definitely. "Shine" is definitely one of my all-time favorite hip-hop tracks though. Jess I agree about Jazze Pha although he'll always have a spot in my heart for "Dro in Da Wind".

Cash Money is nowhere near as good now as they used to be of course.

Which B.G. album is the one to get though? No one's even mentioned him and he's supposed to be one of the best..."Bling Bling" is classic of course.

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:55 (nineteen years ago) link

Also this is one for the ages. Someone call De Capo:

2. "Jazzy Bitch". Has the beautiful "Human Nature" sample, a typical Mannie rhythm with gun shot snares and tic-tac hi-hat. Tec-9 says "Well as a matter of fact i like the girl who sucks the ball-sack", i disagree though, it always feels like when you get kicked in the balls and they kind of dissapear into your stomach and turns me off a bit, it's alot nicer if they're just licked.

haha

djdee2005 (djdee2005), Monday, 13 September 2004 18:57 (nineteen years ago) link

Not only are the "Big Tigger Live on the Radio" tracks from Lil Wayne's 500 Degreez hilarious, they're the best-sounding on the album as well, really eerie partial apgeggios, beats playing with your sliding around your heels.

Tig: "Caller 2, get up outta here. Hey, W-B-I-TEEE-C-H, what's happenin'?"
Caller 2 (female): "Yeah, what's up? I got a problem with this nigga, he keep callin me, stalkin me an shit, callin talkin bout he want me to stick my finger in my booty."
Tig: "Ugh."
Third voice (Rock Master Rasheed, male): "Hello."
Tig: "So what you gonna do?"
Rasheed: "Say, bitch, I need to use the phone."
Caller 2: "Man, Rasheed, you tricky..."
Tig: "Rockmaster Rasheed?"
Caller 2 (amused): "Rockmaster Rasheed."
Rasheed: "Man, get off the phone, bitch."
Tig: "I say this dude who wants you to stick your finger up your ass, what's his name, you know that?"
Caller 2: "Some crazyass nigga name." [Pretending to be awestruck] "Gregory!!!"
Tig: "OK, well let's launch this one for my man Greg."
Rasheed: "Get off the fucking phone. I tol you fuckin ass, get off the phone."
Tig: "W-B-I-TEEE-C-H, 500 Degreez!"

The new BG single, 'I Want It' is ridiculous - almost like he's singing minor key nate dogg style.

joseph pot (STINKOR™), Monday, 13 September 2004 22:56 (nineteen years ago) link

djdee if you want to hear b.g. get chopper city in the ghetto and then the new album life after cash money. you get to hear him on the coldest videogame mannie beats spitting cash money superfloss with all the hot boys and then distancing himself from cash money and getting all autobiographical and serious. i think you'll like him.

fuck everyone talking about cash money falling off. old cash money can barely even fuck with the stuff they're doing now.
the last big tymers album big money heavyweights is in the top five cash money releases of all time. so many good songs on that. it's the introduction to the new cash money philosophy. funny and smiling and no more harsh cold beats unless someone really wants to do a song about kidnapping or guns.
the last juve album was really good and the lil wayne cd is fucking amazing and ten times better than anything he did before. get excited about that mannie solo too!

3333, Monday, 13 September 2004 23:28 (nineteen years ago) link

I donno though I Got That Work has more joints on it I'd rather listen to than Heavyweights which does have some good stuff but on the whole....I mean Mannie can still drop some banging beats and "Still Fly" is one of the best songs of the 00s but songs like "Oh Yeah," postive/happy or not, are boring. (Another example of Jazze Pha dropping the ball).

33333333, that reminds me.. "back up" off of the latest big tymers is a definite search.

Guerilla Warfare

Hood Rich
Juve The Great

... and that's it! Shameful. What is the next Cash Money album I absolutely need?

on a pure sonic level, i don't even understand how he conceived of like 30% of the sounds that make up his beats

i love mannie's beats, but none of the sounds in that track are especially out? live bass + live guitar + one synth sound? he's got some crazier-sounding beats, sure, but mostly i think it's his sense of melody that sets him apart.

kinda odd to think about cash money, which had a fairly unified aesthetic and production approach, disintegrating and recombobulating over the years and ending up as this splintered identity-free umbrella for like the wayne/drake/minaj axis and rich gang and shit. mannie's departure is the obvious transitional moment but i feel like it came earlier, maybe when they ditched that pen & pixel cover art style? 500 degreez?
