the only objective measure of a bands greatness is whether they can make me dance. hall and oates can make me dance. therefore they are great.

Like, the fighter jet is the DJ's reputation, the American warship is public opinion, and the explosion is the dancefloor reaction.

No one seems to like to mention "She's Gone" or "Sara Smile," maybe because they are too obvious, but I think they are fantastic. If you are looking for a defense with elaborate arguments and so forth, I can't be bothered.

Not indefensible at all -- immaculately-crafted pop-soul, great arranging, singing and writing. "I Can't Go For That" is infectious and magical.

Moustache-less John Oates is like Kiss without make-up -- yeah, I know it's done, but 'tain't the same.

No one seems to like to mention "She's Gone" or "Sara Smile," maybe because they are too obvious, but I think they are fantastic.

I missed the earlier seventies hits when growing up, so I only got to hear them in retrospect -- but both songs are indeed mighty fine, the latter is if I remember a tribute to the underrated Sara Allen, who collaborated with them both on many songs and who passed away some years back (or so I thought, but I keep reading it was her sister and fellow H/O collaborator Janna Allen?).

"I Can't Go For That" is infectious and magical.

Uh, someone DID mention De La Soul by now, yeah?

stevem (blueski), Friday, 2 January 2004 01:16 (twenty years ago) link

I once had the opportunity to spend several hours with Robert Fripp and we spoke about his production on Sacred Songs. He couldn't say enough about how Hall could sing anything with equal feeling and accuracy. Strangely, he even mentioned that he had inquired into forming a King Crimson lineup built around Daryl.
Of course, I didn't need to hear it from Fripp to know that Daryl can sing his ass of.

By the way, am I allowed to praise Daryl Hall?

Hall & Oates have been a favorite of mine for a long time. I'm partial to "Out Of Touch," which came out a few months too late to make "Rock and Soul, Vol. 1." "Did It In A Minute" is a quality forgotten single from '82. On the other hand, John Oates does lose points for titling his '03 solo album "Phunk Shui."

John Fredland (jfredland), Friday, 2 January 2004 01:47 (twenty years ago) link

Uhmmm, oh I know! They're not indefinsible at all, as evidenced by several threads on them in which many an ILMer sang their praise.

Eisbär (llamasfur), Friday, 2 January 2004 09:29 (twenty years ago) link

I actually bought an H&O best of purely cos ILM kept going on about them and I've only played it once - I think I still resent so many people preferring them to Wham! on the TS thread so I think they're too rockist or something. But "Kiss On Your List" and "I Can't Go For That" are gorgeous yes.

If you like Rich Girl, you've got to check out the version on their 1978 Live album. It kicks ass.

Also, I think one of the main problems that people have with H&O (besides John's mustache, already covered here) is G.E. Smith. His dumb mug was all over those videos...

Garibaldianne (Garibaldianne), Monday, 26 July 2004 05:12 (nineteen years ago) link

I love 'Rich Girl' but I just realized that aside from that, my entire knowledge of Hall and Oates is based on an old Christian anti-rock propaganda book that I have which quotes Oates as saying that he "would not be turned off by the idea of sex with a man".

Daniel DiMAGGIO (Daniel DiMAGGIO), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:11 (nineteen years ago) link

So, then it's TRUE what they say about guys with a moustache!

Me, I'm fairly indifferent to H&O. "Sara Smile" I remember as pretty great, tho I've not heard it in 20+ years! "Kiss On My List" and "You Make My Dreams" are probably my favourites. I don't think I can ever again stomach "I Can't Go For That", just 'cause I'm sick to fucking death of that goddamn Simply Red song that I'm forced to endure at the office at least twice a week. (I hate it.)(I hate Simply Red!) But I never cared much for it originally anyways - partly because the phrase "No can do" always infuriated me! (Dunno why.)

Two unanswerable questions: 1. How is it that I've never heard "Family Man" despite remembering all their other early '80s hits? And 2. When and why did they add the "Daryl" and "John" to their bandname? Egotism? A silly decision if you ask me: "Hall And Oates" rolls off the tongue so much more easily. (But at least "Daryl Hall And John Oates" is still much better [in every way] than "England Dan and John Ford Coley"!)

Myonga Von Bontee (Myonga Von Bontee), Monday, 26 July 2004 06:15 (nineteen years ago) link

My cubicle neighbor at work and I swapped CDs last week. She picked Shuggie Otis out of my collection (asking "What's this?" and me replaying, "Oh, it's great great great, just listen to it"), and I picked Hall and Oates Greatest Hits out of hers. We bonded.

My last job at a coffee shop piped in that cable radio stuff, which is hit and miss at best. One day "She's Gone" came on, and I started singing along as I made coffee. So did my co-worker Andre. "You like this?" I asked him. He said, "Lemme tell you a secret. Black people like Hall and Oates." I had no idea.

More info:

Daryl Hall has sued his longtime music partner John Oates, arguing that his plan to sell off his share of a joint venture would violate the terms of a business agreement the Hall & Oates duo had forged.

The move quickly prompted a judge to temporarily block the sale while legal proceedings and a previously initiated arbitration continue.

A Nashville chancery court judge issued the temporary restraining order on Nov. 16, writing that Oates and others involved in his trust can't move to close the sale of their share of Whole Oats Enterprises LLP to Primary Wave IP Investment Management LLC until an arbitrator in a separately filed case weighs in on the deal, or until the judge's order expires — typically within 15 days, unless a judge extends the deadline.

I don't think so.

Daryl Hall has sued his longtime music partner John Oates, arguing that his plan to sell off his share of a joint venture would violate the terms of a business agreement the Hall & Oates duo had forged.

this seems much more likely and it's not a restraining order as reported, it's an injuncture which is a totally different thing, and also seems like a legitimate thing for Hall to be not ok with

Yeah, a TRO is usually issued in a domestic violence or other situation in which one of the parties presents a physical threat to the other. That didn't seem right in this case.

immodesty blaise (jimbeaux), Saturday, 25 November 2023 21:06 (four months ago) link

Daryl Hall filed a sharply worded sworn statement Wednesday explaining why he’s suing music partner John Oates over an alleged breach of their business partnership, and sadly he does not indulge us by incorporating his song titles into his filing.

Also this is the first time I've heard Oates address the following:

(Oates) claimed Hall is the one who went rogue, alleging Hall “has consistently and publicly been adamant about being perceived as an individual rather than as part of a duo or group.” He also alleged Hall has “insisted” on the group being known as “Daryl Hall and John Oates,” rather than the more commonly known “Hall & Oates.”

xp Is it more common for one partner to simply sell out to the other partner? That seemed to be the case with the Band (everyone selling their share of the publishing to Robertson) and others (like Denny Laine selling his shares of his Wings co-writes to McCartney). Also, those particularly cases went on to prove Hall's point - never sell your publishing unless you're 80 and retiring.

I can't say the idea of a Broadway musical appeals to me. A brief excerpt:

Garrett and D’Arienzo also caught wind of the unusual dynamic between Hall and Oates. Both saw the group live a few times during their mutual projects and came away disenchanted. “They didn’t look at each other and never even talked to each other,” Garrett recalls. “I don’t think the audience noticed or cared. But I could not understand it.” Although he says Hall and Oates both showed up for a workshop reading of he and Taylor’s attempted musical, Garrett could also sense the tension between the two. “They would speak individually and not together,” he says, “and not confer with each other.”

D’Arienzo felt the same during his few interactions with them and at the concerts he attended. “I saw their show three times, and it was great,” he says. “They played amazing. But they didn’t seem like they were having fun onstage. It definitely felt like a business relationship.”

In another telling moment, D’Arienzo says he when he submitted his script, members of their team expressed enthusiasm — including half of the duo. “I remember getting a message from John Oates that was, ‘I love this so much, but I’m not going to say anything, because if I say I love it, Daryl will hate it.’”
