The Easybeats are there by the way. The Beatles are so overrated. ;)

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 5 December 2003 07:04 (twenty years ago) link

man, an awesome biopsy of 65.

jack cole (jackcole), Friday, 5 December 2003 07:08 (twenty years ago) link

I am SOOOO waiting for the inevitable Geir-lash on this.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 December 2003 07:08 (twenty years ago) link

it looks fantastic, but, ah, sun ra the only jazz?

gaz (gaz), Friday, 5 December 2003 07:11 (twenty years ago) link

Does John Coltrane's 'Sun Ship' count as '65? Recorded then, released '71 or something

Andrew Thames (Andrew Thames), Friday, 5 December 2003 07:13 (twenty years ago) link

Miles is there too. I confess that I'm mostly ignorant of jazz; I would've liked to have included more.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 5 December 2003 07:13 (twenty years ago) link

Looking at this list the thing that just seems soooo crazy about the any mid to late sixties year is how much insanely great pop/rock/garage/surf/folk music was being created in America and which has been preserved and reissued. You could probably up a couple of amazing CDR700s never leaving the states and never even touching jazz or soul (which you could fill another couple with, not to even mention weird-y beird-y classical experimenters working at the time). And then when you do get out of America you realize that every place from Jamaica to India to Holland to Brazil to Australia had these fantastically vibrant scenes all of which someone somewhere has meticulously documented in the past 40 years. I couldn't even begin to narrow it all down. I tip my hat to you.

That is some greatness right there.

nate detritus (natedetritus), Friday, 5 December 2003 08:36 (twenty years ago) link

Wow, it's hard to believe that Eyes track was really 1965. What an amazingly fucking modern sounding record! One of the greatest.

This looks really neat Sarah. I demand a copy!

Broheems (diamond), Friday, 5 December 2003 08:37 (twenty years ago) link

That is some greatness right there

in alex's post or the disc?

both, i guess.

gaz (gaz), Friday, 5 December 2003 08:39 (twenty years ago) link

It's all yours, Broheems. I can hand-deliver it to you and any other Chicago people who want it this weekend.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 5 December 2003 09:28 (twenty years ago) link

For the record, there are a couple of fuckups up there which are being transferred to the '66 CDR. All is well.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 5 December 2003 10:59 (twenty years ago) link

Sarah is spiff!

Ned Raggett (Ned), Friday, 5 December 2003 16:03 (twenty years ago) link

I'd always wanted to believe I was born in a cool year. Now Sarah has proven by science that it's true :)

Jeff W (zebedee), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:20 (twenty years ago) link

wow this is great. i am glad someone finally did one beyond the 70s!!

fiddo centington (dubplatestyle), Friday, 5 December 2003 17:23 (twenty years ago) link

even if they are wrong about the Beatles!

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:10 (twenty years ago) link

(Sarah check yr email < /gross redundancy, as everyone else has probably emailed her about this already too>)

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:12 (twenty years ago) link

*cough* geir *cough cough*

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:13 (twenty years ago) link

Alex, this is beneath you.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:18 (twenty years ago) link

Don't worry, 1966 will have "Last Train To Clarksville" on it.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:23 (twenty years ago) link

I could kick Davy Jones commercial ass. He didn't even write his own songs and he's short and my eyes are prettier.

Alex in SF (Alex in SF), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:32 (twenty years ago) link

Boyce/Hart and Goffin/King were great pop songwriters, and Davy didn't do jack shit on LTTC anyway.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 5 December 2003 20:36 (twenty years ago) link

um, Sarah, James Brown's "Try Me" is 1958. 1965 is when he recorded "I Got You (I Feel Good)" and "Papa's Got a Brand New Bag," though.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 5 December 2003 21:33 (twenty years ago) link

I didn't notice it charting in '58, but according to AMG, "Try Me" also reached #63 in the pop singles chart and #34 in the black singles chart in 1965. Was it a re-release or a different version?

"Papa's Got A Brand New Bag, Part 1" should probably replace it. I like both songs a lot and had trouble choosing between them.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Friday, 5 December 2003 21:44 (twenty years ago) link

a re-release, maybe. or possibly a live version. but yeah, "Papa" is the choice here.

M Matos (M Matos), Friday, 5 December 2003 22:42 (twenty years ago) link

fantastic track list! i was worried about how much overlap there'd be between yours and mine but there's not that much (zombies, turtles, byrds, stones, dylan).

bad jode (Jody Beth Rosen), Sunday, 7 December 2003 21:14 (twenty years ago) link

The version of "Try Me" that charted in '65 was the organ instrumental re-recording, on Smash.

Douglas (Douglas), Sunday, 7 December 2003 22:37 (twenty years ago) link

was gonna ask, D! thanks for clarifying.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:24 (twenty years ago) link

It's cool, I ended up replacing it with "Papa..." after all.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:28 (twenty years ago) link

Sarah, 1970 should be to you any day now.

M Matos (M Matos), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:41 (twenty years ago) link

Gooooood. I'm busting my balls to get '66 done at present. When I do I'll let you know the other one I'd like to trade for.

Sarah Pedal (call mr. lee), Sunday, 7 December 2003 23:54 (twenty years ago) link

this is so so so great
