What, no love for Somewhere In Time?

original bgm, Saturday, 4 January 2003 18:40 (twenty-one years ago) link

Somewhere in Time is the one with the references to previous albums, I think.

I went to Acapulco a few years ago, and they had a huge Walmart in the town that was eerily reminiscent to me of the Powerslave album cover. The thing looked like a goddamn temple, with a long ramp leading up to the entrance. I guess they haven't been subjected yet to commercials of old people chuckling "We got a marchin' band came through here yesterday!!"

The cover with Eddie on it!

one year passes...
For Best Album Cover Ever, I'd vote Live After Death. Powerslave, with all its detail and clever jokes ("Indian Jones wuz here" "Wot? No Guiness?" etc) is pretty cool too.

For worst, I'd have to say Virtual XI. What the ---- is supposed to be going on with that one? The X Factor is pretty bad, too.

the new one is pretty bad too

New one is not so good. (The album is, tho!)

I don't know, I like that cover a lot! Not as good as their classic covers, not by a long shot, but miles ahead of the last couple.

This one is BY FAR the worst:

I thought A Matter of Life and Death was not only their best album since the '80s, but also had one of the better covers.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

But yeah, the cover of Dance of Death is an all-time low.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:05 (thirteen years ago) link

I guess it is better than I remembered, but I like the cartoonish aspect of the new one.

I think we can all agree on Dance of Death though, right? I mean, look at the baby!

(lol xpost)

isnt the story behind dance of death that the designers accidentally sent over a work in progress and it got sent into production without being checked?

reallysmoothmusic (Jamie_ATP), Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:09 (thirteen years ago) link

Dance of Death should be subtitled "Oh Poser, so much to answer for..."

EZ Snappin, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:10 (thirteen years ago) link

Looking at the Dance of Death cover, you get the feeling none of those masked people, animals, etc., were there in the first version - that it was just Grim Reaper Eddie. And that would have been a pretty awesome cover. But then they threw all those smooth digital people in, got the perspective all wrong so none of them have any spatial relationship to any of the others, and...yeah, it's an atrocity.

Interestingly (okay, maybe only to me), my T-shirt from that tour is one of my favorite shirts, because it doesn't have Eddie on it - it's got a photo of the band on the front. I think that might be the only time they've ever done that.

My favorites are Powerslave and Live After Death, with The Number of the Beast and A Matter of Life and Death close behind. I like the cover to Piece of Mind a lot, though I don't love the album as much as many others do.

Dance of Death is so Eyes Wide Shut. Ick!

Matter of Life & Death cover was great, also liked Brave New World.

Of the old covers, Killers might be my favorite...sooo iconic!

Not an album cover, but this might be my alltime fave:

Killers is iconic and hard to top, but I like all the Blade Runneresque aesthetic that they bought into for the Somewhere in Time era as well.

Johnny Fever, Tuesday, 10 August 2010 02:35 (thirteen years ago) link

Agh forgot Somewhere in Time. As Mr Veg noted, that's the "lay on your bed kicking your feet studying the album cover for hours" cover
