Yeah, this was basically what happened to me too.

Tuomas (Tuomas), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:19 (eighteen years ago) link

I don't think I ever liked'em.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:21 (eighteen years ago) link

I like Christmas songs, except for that Paul McCartney one, which makes me have fantasies of mowing down people in the mall with a shotgun, and then I grin.

Paunchy Stratego (kenan), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:21 (eighteen years ago) link

my favourite Indie Christmas Song

"Just Like Christmas" by Low - no debate necessary.

Markelby (Mark C), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:22 (eighteen years ago) link

im listening to about 300 of them on my ipod right now.

bingo (Chris V), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:22 (eighteen years ago) link

Errr.... I know some boys of an NYPD choir that would challenge that.

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:23 (eighteen years ago) link

x-post to Markelby... and maybe I should rephrase that message.

I heart Christmas songs. Always have done.

C J (C J), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:24 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually, you've got to go a long way to beat Bing. "White Christmas" trumps the lot, I reckon.

Jesus Christ; where did you find 300 songs!

winter wonderland, tune!

not-goodwin (not-goodwin), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I think that song has transcended indie, Ian (the Pogues, I mean).

Mädchen (Madchen), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:25 (eighteen years ago) link

I wish I liked xmas songs. I want to belive! really, I do! But I cant stands em.

D.I.Y. U.N.K.L.E. (dave225.3), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:26 (eighteen years ago) link

I like carols! For singing, natch. Extra credit for unexpected descants, strong, moving alto parts, and that weird English renaissance discordant thing aka "Lo, How a Rose" and "The Holly and the Ivy" and "In the Bleak Midwinter".

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:27 (eighteen years ago) link

xpost. exactly. i think the point where i tought as a kid "fuck off with the songs, just give me the presents" was another sign that i was destined to become a greedy atheist.

Nathalie (stevie nixed), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:29 (eighteen years ago) link

When I was a little tiny C J, I used to think that there really was a special Christmas animal called a Holly Bear which was being sung about in 'The Holly and the Ivy'. I wanted a Holly Bear of my very own.

C J (C J), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:29 (eighteen years ago) link

I have always liked Christmas songs I think, and especially after Cassetteboy has had his wicked way with them...

But Matt and I actually start practicing carol duets on the recorder at this time of year, so I'm not a representative adult.

Archel (Archel), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:30 (eighteen years ago) link

I think I just like singing McCartney's "Christmas Time" to annoy everyone who knows me.

Lars and Jagger (Ex Leon), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:32 (eighteen years ago) link

granted there are multiple versions of the same songs on my list. right now im on to the Boston Pops Christmas

bingo (Chris V), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:36 (eighteen years ago) link

and my favorite indie xmas song is Little Drummer Boy - Mark Kozelek...i have told my story of why i love this song on here multiple times.

bingo (Chris V), Monday, 28 November 2005 15:40 (eighteen years ago) link

-- Mädchen (madchen_in_unifor...), November 28th, 2005.

Oops, completely missed the "indie" bit. Bing isn't really considered Indie these days either, is he?

hobart paving (hobart paving), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:05 (eighteen years ago) link

the year i stop liking the Vince Girauldi Trio's "Charlie Brown Christmas" soundtrack is the year i give up fun altogether.

If you are a singer and you hate Christmas songs, you are a sad, feeble human being.

Dan (And Fuck This "Indie Christmas Song" Bullshit In The Nose While You're At I, Monday, 28 November 2005 16:09 (eighteen years ago) link

Dan! I am not really a singer but I have been conscripted for my parents' church choir on Christmas morning. So I'll be putting my carol-love to the test. No word yet on what the material is.

Laurel (Laurel), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:11 (eighteen years ago) link

DAN IS AN ANTISEMITE

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:11 (eighteen years ago) link

I can't remember, Dan, have you ever sung Christmas songs? ;-)

JEWS CAN SING TOO

n/a (Nick A.), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:11 (eighteen years ago) link

As for me, I've spent the last few Decembers going up to Seattle to see the Squirrels perform their annual Christmas show, complete with many tweaked carols. If that isn't musical love for the season, what is?

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:12 (eighteen years ago) link

Hmm, maybe you never grew up. ;)

I had a perfectly angst-free childhood! I still go home each year for cozy Christmases! I have no reason to hate. And I'll say it again, Johnny Mathis's Christmas album frickin' rules. (That said my new favorite is the John Waters compilation from last year.)

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:13 (eighteen years ago) link

OMG, that Mathis album is second only to Nat King Cole's.

Dan (Black People Own Christmas) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:14 (eighteen years ago) link

NKC's is wonderful. Im partial to Frank Sinatra.

bingo (Chris V), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:16 (eighteen years ago) link

Damn, you're right, I forgot about Mr. Cole's. Okay, they both rule! But yeah, that Mathis album -- that for me is the instant nostalgia flashback to tree-trimming times when younger. Pretty much all those takes are the definitive ones in my experience.

It is good to see that Mr. Bingo loves him the Xmas.

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:16 (eighteen years ago) link

I spent the weekend Griswolding up the house...yesterday we got in the old front wheel drive sleigh and cut down a tree.

bingo (Chris V), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:17 (eighteen years ago) link

I played Fairytale of New York (in October) near closing time in a nearly deserted East Village gay bar. At which point the (balding bitch) bartender walked over to the jukebox and unplugged it.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:23 (eighteen years ago) link

I've never disliked ALL xmas songs, just rubbish ones. Carols are generally amazing, cos the melodies are usually immense and the lyrics are usually really evocative and beautiful. "Little Town of Bethlehem" may well be my fave song ever. The hopes and fears of all the years are met in thee tonight.

Somehow I refuse to feel bad.

OUT

Ned Raggett (Ned), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

One of the few I'm still fond of is Good King Wenceslas.

Oh Ned, I'm amazed.

Dr Morbius (Dr Morbius), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:27 (eighteen years ago) link

The best carols are the ones in minor keys: "Coventry Carol", "We Three Kings", "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", "What Child Is This? (Greensleeves)", "I Wonder As I Wander", etc etc.

Dan (The Ones In Major Keys Are Also Brilliant) Perry (Dan Perry), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:41 (eighteen years ago) link

Actually I hate all Christmas songs until December starts. Then I love 'em.

There was a man with an accordian playing christmas choons on an accordian outside my Tube station this morning, and I nearly thumped him. Then I realised he was blind, so merely kicked him in the shins instead.

Hello Sunshine (Hello Sunshine), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:46 (eighteen years ago) link

When I started hearing John Fahey versions of them.

I do feel guilty for getting any perverse amusement out of it (Rock Hardy), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:47 (eighteen years ago) link

I am very bah humbug about Christmas pop songs. It's the usual story: worked in a fast food restaurant over the Christmas period, one Christmas CD, 15 plays per shift, no more Paul McCartney thanks very much.

Also the last few years I've worked in the Fair Trade shop near the Stephen's Green Shopping Centre and the centre blasts crappy Christmas tunes out all over the street from 9am to 9pm. Very annoying.

"Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" always brings a tear to my eye, though.

accentmonkey (accentmonkey), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:53 (eighteen years ago) link

I hate Christmas songs. I was never very keen (once past the age of six) and then working in a department store during the Christmas period, with the same bloody songs on a two-hour loop. I still feel real actual pain whenever I hear the Jackson Five version of the Little Drummer Boy.

Anna (Anna), Monday, 28 November 2005 16:59 (eighteen years ago) link

But there's high comedy to be enjoyed in the video for the Bowie N Bing version, in which a clearly uncomfortable Mr Crosby looks alarmed at the fact that long-haired youth has been allowed to get so close to him, while all the time wondering where he is and what's going on.
