I have only listened to the first few minutes of it, though, so I don't know if it's classic or not (I tend to listen to this stuff while going to sleep, and always miss the ending).
― Casuistry (Chris P), Monday, 24 November 2003 05:08 (twenty years ago) link
I think Minnesota Public Radio used to sometimes play episodes of their '50s shows. I would always try to tune in.
Anytime Ray impersonates a woman, it's classic. I always picture Benny Hill or Jonathan Winters in drag, even if the woman is supposed to be young and/or beautiful.
"ly Ballou speaking." --- also classic.

"I can just imagine Agatha's reaction when she reads this ransom note. . ."
"Well, as you can imagine, my reaction to this ransom note is very negative."
Of course, it's about 100 times funnier in the Agatha voice.
Most inspired show title: Fern Ock Veek, Sickly Whale Oil Industrialist (the story of a UCLA coed who seeks a new and more pointless life in the Alaskan wilderness).

I remember everybody I knew telling me about that SNL skit the week after I aired but I never saw it until the YouTube era, so it had a little trouble living up to the legend. So I see Paul S and Will Lee behind Bob and Ray, were they in the SNL band at that point, I can't remember. Did they ever sleep? Or maybe that was before Letterman.
― Dalai Mixture (James Redd and the Blecchs), Saturday, 18 February 2012 16:37 (twelve years ago) link
That is from a special centered on Bob & Ray that aired live in SNL's time slot:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0078888/
(It's from '79 not '81, despite what the iMdB says.)
Yes, Shaffer and Lee were in the SNL band at that time. Three years before Letterman debuted on late night.

Jean Doumanian was Lorne Michaels' assoc producer on SNL at that time, then went on to become lead producer on the disastrous fall '80 half-season. That's what she's famous for, to me.
