I will definitely vote whatever the deadline be

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 21:58 (two years ago) link

I will try to make that deadline but...

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 21:59 (two years ago) link

I’d appreciate an extension.
Has any attention been paid to how Dulli is a master cover-chooser?? The Whigs’ (Dulli’s??) choice of cover songs has been a defining aspect of my love for the band, beyond the songwriting and musicianship of the band

Always has the band’s strengths and the audience’s needs in mind and I swear I’ve lost my shit at more Whigs covers than any other band??

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 23:10 (two years ago) link

they're a rock band whose taste is part of their appeal and their ongoing project in a way i can't really compare to any others

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 23:16 (two years ago) link

by "band" there i think i kinda mean the whigs and the twilight singers and dulli solo all at the same time. but it's also down to the way rick mccollum plays guitar like he's a '70s r&b session dude with his distortion pedal cranked

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 23:18 (two years ago) link

mccollum is really such a fantastic player & it's a shame he wasn't able to stick around for the reunion albums, like those are still great without him but imagine what could have been.

ufo, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 23:40 (two years ago) link

I think it's neat that Dulli seems to only get good enough at instruments himself to convey his ideas, but then also surrounds himself with incredible talent to make up for it. It's a good approach!

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 23:43 (two years ago) link

Is Black Love the closest anyone gets to the paranoiac muddle of Exile on Main Street's production?

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 23:45 (two years ago) link

lol, possibly for many of the same reasons!

Josh in Chicago, Thursday, 3 June 2021 00:23 (two years ago) link

if you haven't been reading dulli interviews from the mid to late 00s...there's a lot of wild shit in there

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Thursday, 3 June 2021 01:07 (two years ago) link

Was he a big heroin guy? I know nothing about him.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Thursday, 3 June 2021 01:10 (two years ago) link

coke, as the 1998 bootleg evidences

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Thursday, 3 June 2021 01:24 (two years ago) link

there are other subtle indications elsewhere lol

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Thursday, 3 June 2021 01:37 (two years ago) link

have sent out confirmations to those who've sent ballots so far

i'll extend the deadline until at least monday

ufo, Thursday, 3 June 2021 07:21 (two years ago) link

This is impossible

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 4 June 2021 03:21 (two years ago) link

Temptation comes not from hell
But from above

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Friday, 4 June 2021 03:23 (two years ago) link

your kisses scourge me, hyssop in your perfume

mookieproof, Friday, 4 June 2021 03:35 (two years ago) link

This is impossible

yeah, I've got all my Dulli stuff by the stereo but everything's far too consistently great, how to choose

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Friday, 4 June 2021 04:04 (two years ago) link

only thought so far is that 1965 will benefit from current heat wave

swing out sister: live in new donk city (geoffreyess), Friday, 4 June 2021 04:05 (two years ago) link

here to highlight this, one of the best on She Loves You:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-uatQxzQQQ

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Friday, 4 June 2021 08:55 (two years ago) link

Please Stay (Once You Go Away) is also sounding great on this listen; this album really holds up well.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Friday, 4 June 2021 09:19 (two years ago) link

This is too hard. I thought I had a good handle on them but there's too much I don't know! I'm basically going to be choosing from Gentlemen, Black Love, 1965 and the first Twilight Singers' record.

Vanishing Point (Chinaski), Friday, 4 June 2021 13:18 (two years ago) link

I feel like She Loves You is OK, but not quite up to the standards of Dulli's best covers for the most part

intern at pelican brief consulting (Simon H.), Friday, 4 June 2021 13:24 (two years ago) link

i really like she loves you

however.... had the whigs put out a covers full-length in the ‘90s........

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Friday, 4 June 2021 15:05 (two years ago) link

around half of she loves you is really good and the other half is just ok

ufo, Friday, 4 June 2021 15:08 (two years ago) link

yeah i remember being unmoved by the choices on She Loves You, so much that i didn't buy it. I don't think I want to hear Dulli singing "Strange Fruit" tbh. Uptown Avondale/live covers are where it was at for me. I remember slowly realizing what song they were playing and losing my shit when they played "Creep" at a show I saw in Cleveland.

weird woman in a bar (La Lechera), Friday, 4 June 2021 16:53 (two years ago) link

Not looking good for finalizing a ballot.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 June 2021 01:25 (two years ago) link

i believe in y'all

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Monday, 7 June 2021 01:26 (two years ago) link

My brane hurts

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 June 2021 01:29 (two years ago) link

i believe in y'all

I think I’m starting to believe it all myself.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 June 2021 01:33 (two years ago) link

What’s the submission date? Sorry if I’ve missed the answer to this already

Spottie, Monday, 7 June 2021 01:44 (two years ago) link

Was supposed to be today, theoretically was extended to tomorrow

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 June 2021 01:50 (two years ago) link

I can’t even rank the tracks on Gentlemen, never mind the whole oeuvre.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 June 2021 01:55 (two years ago) link

Can I just post Gentlemen and Black Love and be done with it?

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 June 2021 02:08 (two years ago) link

I just realized I have some bootleg comp of covers, b-sides & rarities called "Now We Can Begin." Nice to have a bunch of odds and ends in one place.

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 June 2021 02:21 (two years ago) link

end date is: please get your ballots in as soon as you can, but if people need more time that's fine. no hard deadline at the moment, just want to get as many ballots as possible so we can have something of a decent rollout since turnout has been pretty low

ufo, Monday, 7 June 2021 02:31 (two years ago) link

if you're having trouble, remember you can do an unranked ballot! (just make sure to say so in the email)

ufo, Monday, 7 June 2021 02:50 (two years ago) link

Will get mine in today - just need to relisten to the last few albums chronologically... on it.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Monday, 7 June 2021 11:31 (two years ago) link

This is too hard. I thought I had a good handle on them but ... I'm basically going to be choosing from Gentlemen, Black Love, 1965 and the first Twilight Singers' record.

otm...

Josh in Chicago, Monday, 7 June 2021 12:09 (two years ago) link

Hey, looks like one of you made a covers playlist, albeit not quite as extensive as what’s posted above.

AP Chemirocha (James Redd and the Blecchs), Monday, 7 June 2021 12:34 (two years ago) link

You missed a couple.
