Eastman makes a higher end 335 with Lollar pickups from the factory. You could probably come close to getting one selling the Gibson given their price increases.

i just took it apart and am cleaning it. also bought a new lsr nut. i think i'll get it all freshened up and decide if i want to keep it or sell it. kind of like that hgtv show.

re: the Guild discussion upthread. Some years ago I used a Guild 12-string but never warmed to it. Wasn't Clapton a Guild user for a while?

I had an acoustic show over the weekend. All my friends seem to getting fancy new Taylors. I borrowed one and didn't like it - obviously a well-made luxury instrument, but the neck is so slippery that I couldn't really feel where I was. Hoping I am not just doing a sour grapes thing where I claim to not like an instrument that I have no hope of affording any time soon.

2. 1974 Gibson SG. I got this last year right before lockdown. It's in decent shape, I love the skinny neck, and I wanted something from my birth year and this was relatively cheap compared to most other options. I replaced all the pots and capacitors and jack which feels sacrilegious but they were all scratchy and loose but I kept the switch. Ian Mackaye and Carrie Brownstein, some Iommi, not really Angus Young.

3. A 2017 Telecaster Deluxe neck on the routed out body of a 1998 MIM telecaster, with P90s. I had built this with Lace Matt Pike humbuckers and the full 'Jimmy Page' wiring with four push-pull pots but learned I don't like humbuckers that much. I didn't really know these guitars existed til 10 years ago or so and I love the weird hybrid bastardized neck/body combo and 'fuck it just route everything and make a giant pickguard' Fenderness of it.

do 70s SGs have skinnier necks? i might need to look for one of those if so.

Also love the bastardized tele deluxe

Spottie, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 18:15 (two years ago) link

I have never purchased a guitar, but I have three: Electra Telecaster copy (1974, gift from my parents when I was 16); Yamaha SE612 (1989, gift from my ex-wife) and a crappy Series 10 short scale that belonged to my late brother, on which I am attempting to learn slide.

I'm primarily a bass player, of which I also own three: Dano Longhorn (newish); MIM P-Bass (2006), and Fender "cowpoke" P-Bass (1995.) This is my favorite and most played. Kinda rare, active pickups, jazz-like 22 fret neck.

That list is missing Taylor Swift. Probably the most prominent Taylor player who is named Taylor.

I learned to play on an epiphone jeff "skunk" baxter acoustic guitar, which had a very small neck and body. Sounded very thin overall. That is now at my brother's house for his kids to learn. I have 1 electric guitar -- an early 00s PRS Standard 22 (I think?). I got it maybe 20 years ago in high school. At the time, I mostly wanted something that played like that little epiphone, i.e. a small neck and low action. It was also the cheapest PRS I had ever seen, on sale for something like $1100. The maroon and gold probably had something to do with it. I remember being overwhelmed by all of the "made in" variations for Fender guitars, and I was leaning toward a G&L. Single coils probably sounded less forgiving, and I believe a Creed-loving friend was with me and convinced me that PRS guitars are good. I do not love this guitar, but I'm grateful to have a decent enough instrument to play. I'd like to get an old tele instead.

My acoustic is an early OOs Larrivee L-05. I played with a friend that had maybe 5 to 7 amazing guitars at any given time. He sold this to me for $500 as a favor but also because he hated the epiphone so much. He'd replaced the tuners with some fancy matte black ones but switched them back before giving it to me. I don't think the B string has ever been in tune when I pick it up, and I wonder if that is why he'd replaced those tuners. I still love this one. It felt like a big upgrade over the epiphone, anyway.

I wish I'd bought the oldest guitars I could afford at the time. They'd even be 20 years older now. The oldest wood in this photo is definitely on the floor.

I almost exclusively play acoustic at home these days, mostly alone, sometimes with a mate. I've a Lakewood (German brand) auditorium and a Collings small body. Electric I play a Japanese Squier Jagmaster I bought in the early 90s, and an Epiphone Dot because Galaxie 500.

The T59 - there’s also a T58 (Gretschy) and T64 (ES-330)

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 02:15 (two years ago) link

Nice mix moodles. What’s the story with the Martin?

Spottie, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 03:05 (two years ago) link

it's my dad's, I learned to play on it during my tween years, then ran off with it later on.

Mr. Cacciatore (Moodles), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 04:25 (two years ago) link

Ah cool

Spottie, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 05:31 (two years ago) link

There's something subtly a little cheesy looking about the Eastmans, but it's very subtle and I might get past it. Actually the T58 is beautiful, I just don't want those pickups.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 12:55 (two years ago) link

Maybe it's just the script Eastman logo. I think I might want a T59 now.

my daughter has one of their hollow-bodies, whose model number I don't have handy, and it's a thing of beauty. I love getting my jazzy noodling out on that guitar.

People are asking insane prices for the Gibson I have on Reverb, like double what I paid a few years ago. I can't imagine they're actually fetching that much.

do 70s SGs have skinnier necks?

That, the harmonica bridge and the oversized-looking headstocks seemed to be commonly invoked about the shittiness of the norlin era ones.

Subjectively it feels thin to me so I measured with digital calipers (in mm beccause the thing goes to 128th in fractional inches) width at the nut and the thickness at the 12th fret:

Epiphone Dot 43 x 23
SG 40 x 26
Deluxe 42 x 23.5
Tele 42 x 22.5
Strat 40 x 23.5

So thin but the thickest at the 12th but it has an unbound ebony fretboard so feels much slippier than the epiphone with cheap binding and a squarer profile

joygoat, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 13:34 (two years ago) link

xp looks like it's selling consistently for 1300-1450 on reverb. it does seem like prices for everything have ticked up tho.

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:20 (two years ago) link

yeah when I look at the actual sale prices it's more in line with what I paid, guess there are just a couple ridiculous listings. Prices are ticking up though.

longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 14:21 (two years ago) link

prices for everything are up, plus reverb increased fees to net 10% and people are trying to recover

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:27 (two years ago) link

i thought it was 5%

have a Dean Dave Mustaine Zero guitar.

want one with a fuckin whammy bar or one that can play itself cos I suck.

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 15:38 (two years ago) link

Spottie - Reverb fee is 5%, then add reverb or PayPal processing fee. then deduct shipping since you listed with free shipping ;-)

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 16:05 (two years ago) link

I’m going to actually try selling stuff local instead of via Reverb next time I have something to sell. I hate Craigslist but shipping keyboards and guitars is such a PITA.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 16:27 (two years ago) link

the first time I sold a guitar and shipped it I failed to appreciate how costly and difficult it was if you don't know what you're doing and basically lost a lot of money on the sale

Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 16:28 (two years ago) link

Dimensional weight is a motherfucker.

I had a guitar shop in Washington ship me an Ampeg VT40 combo once - it probably weighed 100 pounds on its own and had free shipping. They must have been desperate to make it go away.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 16:31 (two years ago) link

i think the last time I sold a guitar and amp I literally hand-delivered it to a friend cos fuck shipping that stuff.

ah, got it. i think offerup is a good option, at least for gibsons and fenders since you'll get enough eyes on those. also offerup for amps for sure. reverb prob better for higher end stuff or more rare.

I really like the birds! Did not know until a few years ago that they're all different species!

I've never actually played a PRS. Their S2 series has always intrigued me.

peace, man, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 19:07 (two years ago) link

The best-looking S2s also lack birds :/

ha I was actually just looking at an S2 standard sunburst on Craigslist and thinking how much I'd like that guitar with a different headstock, which inspired the post

i wonder if you could put a gibson headstock on it?

the thing that is most exhausting to me about the PRS aesthetic is the transparent tops with all the figured maple woodgrain stuff, like would it kill them to make a guitar that's painted a solid color

call all destroyer, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 19:40 (two years ago) link

You guys should def trade me an oldish tele for my washington hatcats themed prs. It's a solid color!

bogo jumbo junbi boba (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 19:44 (two years ago) link

Even flame top Les Pauls are ugly IMO. Plain tops look so cool in a darker edged burst, I see no reason to gild the lily.

Joe Bombin (milo z), Wednesday, 2 June 2021 20:01 (two years ago) link

yah not a fan of PRS's and it's all based on aesthetics.

Spottie, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 20:01 (two years ago) link

hard to tell from sufjans pic but that prs looks like just normal paint no transparent?

Spottie, Wednesday, 2 June 2021 20:02 (two years ago) link

i made fun of the quilted burst top / bird inlay prs aesthetic on one of the guitar threads here; after christmas this year the guitar player in my band bought himself a blue burst prs with the bird inlays
