some absolutely wretched replies to Kim Leadbeater for doing a photo op for a Palestine charity fundraiser. Respect to her for not deleting it yet tbf.

Secret Barrister is a cunt. Good on Burnham.

This deserves a serious response so I have decided to set out my side of things in the thread which follows ... https://t.co/4xJYdDjTOF

— Andy Burnham (@AndyBurnhamGM) May 27, 2021

xyzzzz__, Friday, 28 May 2021 07:05 (two years ago) link

are all Barristers such complete cunts. I'd deffo try and keep it a secret if I was one.

let's just say the entry path doesn't exactly encourage diversity

Chickpeas, Scamps and Beeves (Noodle Vague), Friday, 28 May 2021 08:28 (two years ago) link

apart from when Kieth shattered the glass ceiling, but I guess he's quite an exceptional man - the tenement block kid from Surrey who could not be stopped!

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 08:36 (two years ago) link

Burnham is correct to call the conduct of the QC disgraceful, lawyers are understandably touchy if they think politicians are calling judges, deciding on points of law, disgraceful.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 28 May 2021 08:43 (two years ago) link

Burnham's thread was v good and even-handed. He gave a full account for his first remark.

Not a single mention that the current General Secretary of the Labour Party was heavily involved in this disaster. 🤔 https://t.co/VOmUnrAwel

Evans involved in such blatant corruption, cronyism and incompetence, which incidentally are the only things Kieth ever attacks the Tories for. No wonder he can never successfully land a blow on them.

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 09:03 (two years ago) link

Burnham's comments were emotionally understandable but fundamentally wrong and i don't think it's out of bounds for lawyers to pick him up on them, tbh.

He criticised the case being dropped 'on a technicality', called the process disgraceful and asked why it wasn't 'left to a jury to decide'. That would correctly be interpreted as interference with judicial independence if / when the government does it. A jury doesn't decide whether something is or isn't a crime and he's on much stronger ground arguing for lying to a public enquiry to be explicitly made illegal in the future.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 28 May 2021 09:58 (two years ago) link

The BBC’s reporting that Labour fast-tracked the Batley and Spen by-election because they couldn’t afford to run a longer campaign over the summer, which doesn’t bode well for their finances more broadly.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 28 May 2021 10:10 (two years ago) link

xp

even though I'm legally clueless I'm going to contrive to agree cos I can't abide Burnham and always get the feeling he gets high on himself when on the grandstand, regardless of how right or wrong he is.

lol what an utterly desperate admission to make, almost a cry for help. It was only last year they were celebrating the return of some Blairite era donors, with short arms + deep pockets it seems.

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 10:16 (two years ago) link

xps i've known several people (and known of so many more) who either don't vote or don't vote labour due to the fuckery of their local councils, in croydon and throughout the country- i'm pretty sure this is a way bigger group than those who stopped doing so because labour got too woke or whatever. if i actually believed the party's ordinary people guff was about more than obfuscating their own (e.g. property) interests i'd suggest that this would be a better place to start than trying to win over the EDL

100%

I was speaking to someone from Croydon Council about two years ago and they were saying they'd had to reduce the number of welfare checks on at-risk children because they'd run out of money, and were being asked to look at other essential services to reduce.

Scampo di tutti i Scampi (ShariVari), Friday, 28 May 2021 10:26 (two years ago) link

has Kieth ever praised The Preston Model and the recent race successes of it ? has he fuck - he doesn't even think there is a problem

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 10:28 (two years ago) link

lol nothing matters

Left, Friday, 28 May 2021 10:43 (two years ago) link

You could argue that even more than their economics or pandering to racism, autocracy is the hallmark of Blairite Labour

Chickpeas, Scamps and Beeves (Noodle Vague), Friday, 28 May 2021 10:43 (two years ago) link

damn stalinist centrists

Left, Friday, 28 May 2021 10:46 (two years ago) link

even if one party hegemony for decades and we all die lol is the cost, the whole rotten edifice needs burning down to the ground and something new and distinctly different built on top of it.

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 10:51 (two years ago) link

That's basically my conclusion, it's a drain on the energy and dreams of anybody opposed to our slow death by capitalism

Who cares if The Guardian call it 'populism' lol

xyzzzz__, Friday, 28 May 2021 11:08 (two years ago) link

This is because your typical Lab cllr has high personal ambition and wants to keep voters expectations as low as possible. When people find out about CWB they get really excited and enthused and want it. https://t.co/xVjm8O99zp

Just checked @BoardofDeputies Twitter page. No condemnation as yet of Boris Johnson welcoming antisemitic Viktor Orban into Downing Street. Wonder if they'd be this silent if it was Corbyn?

the Boris and the flat business - Johnson cleared of breaking ministerial code.... yawn... That reminds me I need to add some flour and onions to the shopping list

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 14:34 (two years ago) link

-PM 'unwisely' proceeded without understanding funding.
-CCHQ & Tory donor initially paid bill.
-PM found out about Tory donor funding when he read it in media.
-Didn't break ministerial code.
-'Ill-served' by officials.

lol some absolute gems from the Lord Geidt report

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 14:50 (two years ago) link

boris: too thick to understand that taking big handfuls of crisp hundos from donors for personal gain is against the ministerial code, but absolutely intellectually equipped to lead the country through a pandemic

oh well at least it has arrived at that time of the week when Marina Hyde completely annihilates him with some devastating word-play *again*

kieth and his buddies literally make me want to fucking vomit. they really do despise everything that is good.

I just noticed the LibDem candidate in Batley is a producer on the famous show I've never heard of called Bargain Britain on Benefits!

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 19:47 (two years ago) link

anything that gives people the faintest glimmer of hope that something good can be achieved by Labour needs to be snuffed out immediately

calzino, Friday, 28 May 2021 19:50 (two years ago) link

I've seen it suggested that Kieth was all out to do in COU from the start and likely he had a deal with rotten Labour councillors to do it in - in return for support last year.

calzino, Saturday, 29 May 2021 08:40 (two years ago) link

This is v good though for now the Tories are enjoying the better side of that equation. The losses in the South are not going to trouble them just yet. It could take a while (I won't say a decade because I think a 10% increase in house prices in a year is playing with fire and I really think Sunak's bubble will burst). But v good point that Tories don't do levelling up or equality (in the same way Lab can't do the state and racism). However, what really will help them is a divided opposition.

This is (I think?) what I was trying to get at earlier in the thread. If Labour lost 2015/17/19/24/28 in the 90s by starting to ignore an at that point in time unimportant section of the electorate, then are the Conservatives doing the same thing now (and since...2014?) to future elections

I think its two cycles away at least, and there are other unknowns inbetween, but taking a section of the electorate for granted comes at a price eventually
