I've seen rumors that Shuma-Gorath may be the heavy (or a heavy, at least) in DS2, pursuing America Chavez through the multiverse.

Jerome Percival Jesus (Old Lunch), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 22:26 (two years ago) link

I am actually super psyched to see America Chavez on-screen, but I might be the only one.

Nhex, Thursday, 27 May 2021 00:15 (two years ago) link

definitely not. high risk character but awesome if they get it right.

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Thursday, 27 May 2021 01:05 (two years ago) link

With Mordo? He's returning in DS 2, In the Multiverse of Madness.

Thanks. Did wonder if that was the case and guess they weren't expecting a six year gap between the films when shooting the first one

groovypanda, Thursday, 27 May 2021 06:53 (two years ago) link

Originally should've been out in late 2020 (four years after the first, and one year after Endgame). Forgot about the director turnover and Raimi eventually getting the job, and obviously COVID didn't help...

"The Eternals to me were a strange "the gods are based on them" variant in a comics universe that had already incorporated Greek and Norse gods (and other mythologies?), so felt superfluous and conflicting"

Kirby had no intention of setting the Eternals in the mainstream Marvel continuity, and in fact bristled when the likes of Roy the Boy, Mark Gruenwald and other kontinuity kops at Marvel tried to fit it in with the marvel cosmology…one of the oldest comics I have is the issue of thor in the middle of what is retroactively known as the eternals saga after Jack's eternals series proper ended in which Roy the Boy crowbarred the eternals and the celestials alongside the Marvel Asgard, Olympus, etc etc

Those guys called him "Jack the Hack" at the time, being as his dialogue was pretty jagged and his art so defiantly stylized…was jack gonna try to be more like Neal Adams? Not bloody likely! He had no interest in fitting everything tidily together, the way Thomas, Gruenwald and indeed the Marvel fanbase desired… I gotta say that I love that Roy thomas during this run was so gripped by his compulsion that part of the above run saw him devote several issues to why the blonde thor doesn't resemble the red-haired bearded lout that Norse myth tended to represent…

veronica moser, Thursday, 27 May 2021 15:06 (two years ago) link

Thanks for that explanation. As a kid, maybe was conditioned to expect connections and want the tidiness. Marvel Team-Up combining Spider-Man with Killraven and Conan, etc.

i always assumed The Eternals was a kirby's limited series marvel reboot take of the fourth world stuff, no?
in a better world, kirby would be the dc and marvel cameo god

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 May 2021 16:35 (two years ago) link

well it for sure was a continuation of the Fourth World shit that also didn't succeed at DC… at DC, the likes of Carmine Infantino and Julie Schwartz were not going to say "what you're doing here needs to fit in with everything else, Jack" because in the early 70s DC was still run by older guys who were bemused by fans turned pro/archeologists like Roy the Boy…he and the other fans turned pros were the ones that decreed that Devil Dinosaur, Killraven, Deathlok and I think even the allegedly very good Dracula (haven't read it) are all in Marvel continuity…the Marvel older guy brass like Stan and Romita were like "uh, ok, seems a little anal, but you guys seem to know what the nerds want, fine, it's all in continuity," whereas the DC older guys were like "what the fuck are you young nerds talking about?"

the Eternals were supposed to keep going like any other series, as mini- or maxi- series had not been even contemplated at the time… the Eternals didn't have a breakout character like Darkseid…and for that matter, it was somebody else's idea that Starlin's similarly inclined denizens of Titan that gave us Thanos, Eros et al were in fact Eternals who had seceded from Earth… in that case, I think making that connection was a perfectly good idea, although I think Starlin is like "I had no intention of linking those two races up… whatever, Gru" or whoever came up with that…

veronica moser, Thursday, 27 May 2021 17:55 (two years ago) link

part of what makes the fourth world collections so much fun is that jimmy olsen and superman just barge into this whole separate universe over here that neither they nor we know anything about and everything is equally compelling and visually exciting so you have a sense of wonders upon wonders
there have been a zillion new universes since but i think maybe only kirby figured out how to do it right

Draymond is "Mr Dumpy" (forksclovetofu), Thursday, 27 May 2021 18:16 (two years ago) link

shocked that you nerds aren't already talking loki. is a thread necessary?

gotta wait until tonight to watch it with the kid

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 10 June 2021 00:03 (two years ago) link

All I know is if they don't do the Deadpool story where Loki shows up and says "I am your father" story line, they are missing out on what could be pretty fun if done right, especially considering what happens to DP's face as a consequence.

earlnash, Thursday, 10 June 2021 00:58 (two years ago) link

This was very good! Loved the 70s sci-fi meets Terry Gilliam's Brazil vibe.

Roz, Thursday, 10 June 2021 01:26 (two years ago) link

I had the same thought about Brazil!

Guayaquil (eephus!), Thursday, 10 June 2021 02:32 (two years ago) link

um yes hi Loki is great i love it the end

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Thursday, 10 June 2021 04:51 (two years ago) link

Yup, solid start all around. Also ended on the right fucked up note.

Ned Raggett, Thursday, 10 June 2021 06:00 (two years ago) link

I'm aware the TVA has been around in the comics since the mid-90s, but if I was Steve Blackman I'd probably still give my lawyers a call in the morning just to spitball. Which is to say this was great, but it'll remind a lot of people of The Umbrella Academy.

Andrew Farrell, Thursday, 10 June 2021 22:12 (two years ago) link

I wold have had an easier time with the TVA if they weren't so strict about the timeline. Does this mean there is no free will? Is the TVA the baddies?

DJI, Sunday, 13 June 2021 15:36 (two years ago) link

Fucking time travel amirite? I'm getting pretty sick of it. Any time you think more than five seconds about a time travel plot it all falls apart.

DJI, Sunday, 13 June 2021 15:37 (two years ago) link

There are some easter egg-y bits suggesting that Kang (who is confirmed for the next Ant-Man film) may be one of the three timelords. So your POV may prove prescient.

when did owen wilson age into becoming john slattery?

:D

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Monday, 14 June 2021 23:42 (two years ago) link

I like how owen wilson gets to do his signature 'whispery, flirty nonsense' occassionally, like talking up to the TVA judge.... he's still got it!

Swanswans, Tuesday, 15 June 2021 09:40 (two years ago) link

More of that this episode - if it was just 5 episodes of Tom and Owen bickering I would be very okay with that

Andrew Farrell, Wednesday, 16 June 2021 20:26 (two years ago) link

mmm ragnarok salad

Roz, Thursday, 17 June 2021 02:27 (two years ago) link

Yes as I was saying on the netflix thread - Wilson/Hiddleston banter I am here for, it was great.

Stoop Crone (Trayce), Friday, 18 June 2021 03:52 (two years ago) link

This show is so much fun.

terminators of endearment (VegemiteGrrl), Saturday, 19 June 2021 05:52 (two years ago) link

Caught up with this now and as well as Brazil/Umbrella Academy it seems heavily redolent of Legion

groovypanda, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 13:46 (two years ago) link

I know we're only two episodes in but I think I like this one the most of the Disney+ shows thus far. Hiddleston's Loki + Owen Wilson is a truly inspired combination, and I hope they find a way to continue the pairing beyond this show (assuming it's only limited to one season).

Jerome Percival Jesus (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 15:16 (two years ago) link

Thought this was fun, exciting, well scripted, well performed, a story I haven’t seen before on television – the whole package. Some of the Kirby-tribute background shots were stunning. And it looks especially amazing considering almost every scene is basically just two people in a room talking, during a pandemic. Like Wandavision - and TFAWS, which did it badly - it feels like an actual comic book story, not just a blockbuster movie with comic book characters in it.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:00 (two years ago) link

Intrigued to figure out how they’ll do their usual thing and turn it into an airborne fight between two energy beings in the last half an hour.

Chuck_Tatum, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:02 (two years ago) link

"warring timelines" will be the beams of light, obviously

Nhex, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:36 (two years ago) link

I look forward to getting stuck in to Loki based on what I've read here. WandaVision was so much fun but F&WS ultimately pretty boring and dour, and I couldn't give a shit about the Falcon's sister's damn boat.

chap, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 17:48 (two years ago) link

Guess you aren't gonna be waiting in line when the Falcon's Sister's Damn Boat film drops next year.

Jerome Percival Jesus (Old Lunch), Tuesday, 22 June 2021 18:15 (two years ago) link

I heard a rumor that the boat is actually Mephisto in disguise.

Josh in Chicago, Tuesday, 22 June 2021 18:17 (two years ago) link

lol at the notion that umbrella academy somehow broke important new ground in comic book storylines

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 02:22 (two years ago) link

Yeah but the comment was "it'll remind a lot of people of The Umbrella Academy" which I think is fair enough as would imagine the majority of Netflix viewers who watched it don't read comics.

groovypanda, Wednesday, 23 June 2021 06:42 (two years ago) link

I only read the first volume of Umbrella Academy, did it develop a concept or storyline beyond "1989 Doom Patrol tribute band"?

bobo honkin' slobo babe (sic), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 07:15 (two years ago) link

funny you should say, given s1 of doom patrol was effectively “umbrella academy, but good”

Larry Elleison (rogermexico.), Wednesday, 23 June 2021 11:51 (two years ago) link

the 1989 Doom Patrol was good
