lol solid playlist

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Wednesday, 26 May 2021 22:26 (two years ago) link

The “Creep” cover is pretty faithful but is infected with this slightly ambiguous, tense undercurrent which is something that Dulli does with his covers so well

Master of Treacle, Wednesday, 26 May 2021 22:34 (two years ago) link

It’s hidden on Zing, but MacZing still seems to have a bug, thought they were fixing it.

backbeat vmas performance is one of my favorite videos on youtube

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 May 2021 00:31 (two years ago) link

There is something about this band that is like The Band. They have these funky little grooves that they work to death, never quite just playing a simple, um, backbeat. Also, hope I don't type everything in think in the polling thread and run out of things to say on the rollout.

I think Brad is onto something with "Oriole."

loool

mookieproof, Thursday, 27 May 2021 03:12 (two years ago) link

"esta noche" is such a cool track, the way it starts out with that two note electric piano bit that continues through the entire song and that eventually becomes part of the wall of sound where you kinda feel it more than anything else, and that jazzy crescendo rules so much. interestingly kamasi washington plays on it, one of his earlier session gigs. i don't understand the live versions at all though, it's sped up ridiculously and completely loses the groove

ufo, Thursday, 27 May 2021 06:43 (two years ago) link

okay i would say best cover alongside Come See About Me has to be this one from the Beautiful Girls soundtrack... can't find the studio version on spotify but live version from the launch party:

i'm going through dulli covers and i found the twilight singers reinventing "when doves cry" with apollonia! definitely going on my ballot, it's wonderful

fairly straight but fantastic live cover of "i could never take the place of your man", plays to their strengths as well as you'd expect

i have always wanted to cover "mandinka" as a blown-out rawk song and i can't help but be happy that dulli got there before me

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 May 2021 12:51 (two years ago) link

iirc i saw it as an encore to the bowery ballroom show where they played in spades front to back

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Thursday, 27 May 2021 12:52 (two years ago) link

holy shit I would have died of happiness if they'd broken out into that "ex-factor" cover when I saw them

remembering now this also functioned as the dave rosser memorial show. been thinking about him a lot as i've been listening to the twilight singers/gutter twins/late whigs stuff

should be your top 25 ranked plus up to 100 unranked (and up to 25 covers ranked)

My friend and I have a theory that everything can be reggae-fied and work, and I guess the same holds true for Afghan Whigs.
