it sounds like a public-facing entity to take the heat for any fuckups while the private middlemen get pushed further into the shadows but remain firmly there, ensconced in their sweetheart no-bid deals like parasites on a hog’s ass

It will take many years to undo the damage done by Corbyn

vs

This IS what a functioning opposition looks like, it is the voters that are wrong

vs

silence

anvil, Saturday, 22 May 2021 12:50 (two years ago) link

the only time he's looked authoritative and in a position of strength was when he took Shippers to the cleaners for gossiping about his bit on the side. That was his defining moment!

if Corbyn had stepped down after the chicken coup or Smith had a successful leadership challenge, Labour would arguably be in a much more advanced state of decay right now.

calzino, Saturday, 22 May 2021 13:06 (two years ago) link

So something I noticed RE Starmer and Corbyns social media output

Corbyns visits mostly told through third party engagements

Starmers visits never seem to break out of staged photo ops into real stories.

Yes yes, those are definitely the important parts for the leader of a political party, there’s not an army of aides and interns to take minutes.

Got a bit of a technical query! Does anyone know a resource to find out how much government grants to particular councils have changed? Particularly post Labour.

Chewshabadoo, Saturday, 22 May 2021 20:30 (two years ago) link

that is an interesting question. I seem to recall under May that bankrupt Tory-run Northamptonshire council received a very "cheeky" bailout and that seemed like an outrageous pork barrel handout at the time. Now every time I pass through Batley I'm looking up to see if money is getting dropped from helicopters.

calzino, Saturday, 22 May 2021 21:06 (two years ago) link

i think lbhf had a note on their website or in the recent council tax leaflet about the change in theirs.

The sage report snuck out tonight seems all kinds of bad news, especially if you haven’t had the second (or any) jab

After reports from @guardian that no.10 blocked @PHE_uk release of B.1.617.2 schools data, @PHE_uk has now released their technical report on variants at 11pm on a Saturday - this still doesn't seem to have data on schools (!), but what it does have looks seriously worrying. 🧵

i'm seeing some condemnation of their racism and islamophobia from the moderate racists/islamophobes but it's a sign of how fucked things are that their antisemitism doesn't even seem to register to people, not even many anti-racist types - because they're "pro-israel" which is all that matters

Cummings is now about 50 tweets into trying to distance himself from 2020 gov policy over the last few days

1/ Covid… Summary evidence on lockdowns. For UK political pundits obsessed with spreading nonsense on Sweden/lockdowns, cf. SW econ did a bit WORSE than Denmark which locked down, AND far more deaths in Sweden: https://t.co/A9TV9oRGHU

I could have sworn he was quoted as saying something like (in Feb'20): we'll protect the economy and too bad if some old people die.

calzino, Sunday, 23 May 2021 16:23 (two years ago) link

Cummings has the most unreadable writing style - hectoring, pedantic and unfocused. I gave up on that after about five tweets and switched to the L33 R!gby Foundation tweet below it for the lols. That's just the way it is when you're Galaxy Brain #1 though I guess.
