this is a nice catch but i'm not sure it's enough to make up for being 0-for-5 with five strikeouts in your career

He's walking a good amount and not striking out much. He rates pretty well in exit velocity and barrels. I think he'll figure it out but it's definitely been rough.

i love lindor and even tho he's a met i still have a hard time rooting for him to fail, but his slash numbers have been pretty concerning for a bit now even dating back to last season. his SLG percentage has fallen off a cliff and if he's not providing elite power at that position he's kinda just... a high AVG/low OBP shortstop getting into his 30s... it feels pretty dicey to me longterm. they really need him to be an MVP level player for the next 4-5 years because the back half of that contract is gonna be ugly given the type of player he is

mookieproof, Wednesday, 19 May 2021 05:16 (two years ago) link

Over the last ten games he is batting .278/.341/.500, 132 wrc+

More or less, that’s the slash line of his best batting season.

Jacob deGrom is throwing 102 MPH...

Someone send help.

— Palm Beach Cardinals (@GoPBCardinals) May 20, 2021

Karl Malone, Friday, 21 May 2021 15:35 (two years ago) link

deGrom needs his own thread:

ERA 0.71 IP 51.0 SO 82 WHIP 0.57

He is 9-for-20 at the plate this season, and he’s allowed only 22 hits in 51 innings on the mound. Put it another way:

Jacob deGrom's season:
4 runs, 3 RBI as a hitter (9-for-20, .450)
4 runs allowed in 51 innings as a pitcher.

Vin Jawn (PBKR), Tuesday, 1 June 2021 11:25 (two years ago) link

deGrom is going to do what Kluber and Donaldson looked like they might do (but almost certainly won't now): get into the HOF on an astounding peak value after the age of 27.

clemenza, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 15:23 (two years ago) link

He still needs to play 3 more years to be eligible, and may need a Cy young / no hitter / post season heroics along the way to really seal the deal. But he is definitely on the path.

Michael F Gill, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 15:50 (two years ago) link

You think he needs another cy young?! He could tread water the next three years and I think he’d skate into the hall no problem.
I don’t like his odds of playoffs heroics with the Mets!

still has work to do imo, even adjusting for the short 2020 season. and he turns 33 in a couple weeks

I hope you’re right but I don’t think he is a lock just yet. David Wright was also on the verge of the Hall, but then injuries pretty much took it away.

I'm ready to start a deGrom thread. If you have a better title than "The Ghost of Tom Terrific," please, speak up--cribbing from Bruce Springsteen is a sign of desperation.

clemenza, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 20:01 (two years ago) link

How about “From the perspective of a person living in 2021, Jacob DeGrom seems like he has a good shot at the hall of fame, if his arm doesn’t explode. He’s 33.”?

Karl Malone, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 23:01 (two years ago) link

That's not long enough. Maybe "The Persecution and Assassination of Jean-Paul Marat as Performed by the Inmates of the Asylum of Charenton and from the Perspective of a Person Living in 2021, Who Feels Like Jacob DeGrom Has a Good Shot at the Hall of Fame if His Arm Doesn’t Explode. He’s 33.” I kind of like that.

clemenza, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 23:24 (two years ago) link

Or just “DeGrom good”.

"deGrom Good, deGrom Delightful, deGrom DeLovely"

I could also always pun on the word "Poll," an ILX favourite.

happy bobby bonilla day

mookieproof, Thursday, 1 July 2021 14:13 (two years ago) link

does bonilla celebrate? i kind of imagine him throwing a party on this day every year'

of course, each year the party gets just a little bit less valuable, in comparison to what that same party would have been like in the early 2000s

Karl Malone, Thursday, 1 July 2021 15:32 (two years ago) link

Despite the injuries, this team seems pretty tight-knit. I don’t think I’ve seen teammates tagging and cheering each other on through social media as much as this year. Would love to see some more consistent hitting, but otherwise this year has been better than expected so far.

Michael F Gill, Thursday, 1 July 2021 16:19 (two years ago) link

The rumor they were talking on sports talk news this afternoon was that the Mets were considering just paying Bobby Bo off, which to that I "BOOOOOO...".

Mets just need to embrace it and no matter what happens, 7/1 will ALWAYS be Bobby Bo day.

earlnash, Friday, 2 July 2021 03:18 (two years ago) link

i'm curious what their motivation would be. would it save them any money, or are the embarrassed that it's become a thing every year? it cant be that much trouble sending the guy an etransfer every 12 months.

paying him off would cost them (a little extra) money

no reason not to lean into the meme

mookieproof, Friday, 2 July 2021 03:47 (two years ago) link

Was watching last night’s game in NY and there was a phone commercial featuring Bobby himself that said Happy Bobby Bonilla day at the end.

i had thought getting kumar rocker at #10 was kind of a coup for the mets. probably should have known

Probably should have held off on the those billboards saying welcome to New York

Michael F Gill, Sunday, 1 August 2021 22:10 (two years ago) link

That last hit by Schrock it was like less than 2 steps to Baez' right. Not exactly Ozzie Smith range. He muffed an easy double play ball hit right at him the inning before.

Reds commentators were saying the Mets looked like they were playing a get away game today.

earlnash, Sunday, 1 August 2021 22:46 (two years ago) link

Reds owed the Mets a series win, as they had not won one in NY since 2013. They only play them 2 series a year and seem to lose them all no matter how good or bad the Mets seem to be.

I know I saw twice in person Homer Bailey get shellacked by the Mets. That huge first basemen the Mets used to have hit a couple of homers in one game and it was like 100 degrees.

It was a great first half! But back to cold hard reality now. Offense has dissolved and can’t seem to buy a hit with RISP all month. I’m so used to them dramatically collapsing, but each year comes with a different flavor of what-ifs. This year you really wanted to see what Degrom could have done had he stayed healthy. And Lindor was finally hitting consistently well before being injured.

Michael F Gill, Saturday, 21 August 2021 23:34 (two years ago) link

everyone has injuries, and they've had -- as ever -- perhaps more important ones than most. but . . . also cohen is kind of right?

conforto and dom smith and mcneil have had terrible years, but at least they're not making what lindor is

stroman has been fantastic, walker merely average but easily above expectations. may and diaz (again) have been major disappointments. if degrom had been healthy they'd be right in it but also: fucking hit better!

(there is literally no one in MLB i want to see succeed more than jeff mcneil, just because keith law was such an incredible asshole about him 'not being a prospect')

mookieproof, Sunday, 22 August 2021 03:40 (two years ago) link

Cohen strikes me as someone who could become a cross between Steinbrenner and Daniel Snyder with very little trouble.

Captain Beefart (PBKR), Sunday, 22 August 2021 11:37 (two years ago) link

Very much in the spirit of morbs:

Javier Báez said the "thumbs down" sign Mets players have made on the field is a response to fans that have booed him and others. Báez said the players disapprove of how often they've been booed.

"I love the fans, but ... we can't have our fans against us," Báez said. pic.twitter.com/OJmkZQX3xZ

FRAUDULENT STEAKS (The Cursed Return of the Dastardly Thermo Thinwall), Sunday, 29 August 2021 23:19 (two years ago) link

Morbs would have done his traditional SEASON OVER post about a week or two ago.

Villar and Pillar, despite not putting up impressive numbers, have had a lot of clutch hits this year. Jose Peraza too. But pretty much every other batter aside from Alonso and Nimmo has underperformed, especially with runners in scoring position.

Surprisingly the bullpen (including Diaz) has been mostly good this year, throughout all the turmoil. Although anything would be better than 2019.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 30 August 2021 00:06 (two years ago) link

Morbs was anti-booing?

These guys need a thicker skin. Mets fans are pretty lax given the level of futility the last 60 years.

Taliban! (PBKR), Monday, 30 August 2021 00:17 (two years ago) link

Don’t think Morbs would be anti booing, probably would be as disgruntled as the rest of the fans, although with a sense of futility that most Mets carry the past few decades.

Michael F Gill, Monday, 30 August 2021 00:33 (two years ago) link

Never heard Mets fans described as lax though

Michael F Gill, Monday, 30 August 2021 00:34 (two years ago) link

lol gtfo

this team has the third-highest payroll in the majors and they've shit the fucking bed. pillar is a replacement-level asshole and baez will be gone in five weeks because he has a career .302 OBP

lindor needs to wake the fuck up though. this entire city was dying to love him and then he hit .224/.317/.370. i'm sure it sucks being booed, but play better
