Trout, 30, joined some elite company, as he became the third player in Major League history with at least 1,000 runs, 300 home runs and 200 stolen bases by an age-30 season, joining Willie Mays and Alex Rodriguez. And over the last 60 years, he became the fifth-fastest to 1,000 career runs by games played. It took Trout 1,325 games to reach the milestone and the only players who reached it in fewer games over the last 60 years were Rickey Henderson (1,252), Rodriguez (1,261), Kenny Lofton (1,305) and Albert Pujols (1,306).

Trout, Henderson, Rodriguez, Lofton, Pujols

Lofton was an outstanding player and one of my favorites, growing up, but one of these players does not belong!

I would agree, although highly underrated, and I think the VC will put him into the HOF one day. One of the players whose greatest season came in the strike year of '94.

clemenza, Sunday, 22 May 2022 17:36 (one year ago) link

trout putting up that many runs for the Angels of 2012-2022 is pretty incredible on its own

Bruce Stingbean (Karl Malone), Sunday, 22 May 2022 17:43 (one year ago) link

I was poking around to see if I could find out how fast Raines got there and came across this:

"Ted Williams is the fastest recorded player in MLB history to score 1,000 runs; he scored his 1,000th run in his 1,097th game." So they seem to have chosen a convenient cut-off point of 60 years--Williams was a lot faster, and I'm guessing Ruth, Hornsby, and some others were too.

been thinking about reviving the old “this team fucking stinks” Mariners thread, pretty sure Trout produced more runs than the entire Mariners offense over the series.

Homered in his sixth straight game tonight; record is still eight (Griffey, Mattingly, and the ever-mysterious Dale Long).

still the best player in the league

k3vin k., Sunday, 11 September 2022 05:27 (one year ago) link

Even with all the games he missed he's still having an awesome season. I was surprised to see that after yesterday's game, he's somehow up to 33 HR (in less than 100 GP).

frogbs, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 00:59 (one year ago) link

Beat me to it...As great as Bichette has been, he just won player of the week and I'm not sure he should have; I'd have to compare them.

clemenza, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 01:01 (one year ago) link

And then, after almost getting his skull crushed in the 6th, Bichette wins it with a 2-run homer in the 8th.

clemenza, Tuesday, 13 September 2022 01:51 (one year ago) link

In case you were wondering (like they--whoever they is--spend more than seven seconds determining Player of the Week):

Bichette: .500/.529/1.156, 5 HR, 13 RBI
Trout: .450/.500/1.300, 5 HR, 8 RBI

Bichette had many more PA, 34 to 22.

taking a look at his fangraphs page today...some pretty concerning things here

his walk rate has plummeted to about 10.5% over his last 700 PAs, after having hovered around 18% from 2016 through 2021. his swing rate is at an all-time high (44%), and actually has a below-career average O-swing% and his career highest Z-swing% by a lot (72%)...but he just can't hit the ball like he used to. his O-contact% has been steady at about 60% over the last 3 seasons, after having been about 70% every other year. and his Z-contact% has been about 80% over the last 3 seasons after being about 90% before that

also about an average baserunner over the past 4 seasons after being one of the 5 or so best before that

k3vin k., Wednesday, 24 May 2023 16:23 (ten months ago) link

sort of surprised there's not more talk about this

k3vin k., Wednesday, 24 May 2023 16:25 (ten months ago) link

I hope he's able to adjust, he's not having a bad season or anything but obviously it's not up to his usual standards. I really hope he doesn't fall off a cliff like pujols.

omar little, Wednesday, 24 May 2023 16:42 (ten months ago) link

Possible that he aggravated his back condition in the outfield & is playing through pain? Though haven’t watched the Angels enough to see how he’s been going out there. I guess on any other team they might think about having him DH if it was a serious concern besides the obvious issue with this team.

TY FRANCE HATES TEXAS CONFIRMED (gyac), Wednesday, 24 May 2023 16:56 (ten months ago) link

On July 12, 2022 he had a T5 costovertebral dysfunction (dislocated a rib?). Was kinda brushed off by Angels docs but seems significant... eg, rotational trunk torque. Seems like he's still Mike Trout just at 85-90% of peak.

citation needed (Steve Shasta), Wednesday, 24 May 2023 16:59 (ten months ago) link

(xpost) I don't expect him to fall off a cliff; I would guess his aging pattern might be more like maybe Aaron's, where he becomes more of a HR hitter and less of that across-the-board greatest-ever guy. I could see him having more seasons like Aaron's '72-74 (40 HR in 392 AB in '73).

clemenza, Wednesday, 24 May 2023 17:03 (ten months ago) link

xp yeah think it’s otm, even a small decline in his abilities & age/mileage etc might show up more given conjunction of those two things

TY FRANCE HATES TEXAS CONFIRMED (gyac), Wednesday, 24 May 2023 17:07 (ten months ago) link

I see he just tied DiMaggio on the career HR list at 361. 600 would seem to be a very good bet if healthy...if.

he’s going to be an above average player for a while still, but it’s not looking like he’s going to maintain that mays trajectory. which of course was a tough standard to begin with

k3vin k., Wednesday, 24 May 2023 17:45 (ten months ago) link

if he merely ends up next to mantle, rodriguez, and henderson on the leaderboards, that’s not too bad

k3vin k., Wednesday, 24 May 2023 17:47 (ten months ago) link

Yeah. Amazingly enough (amaysingly...rimshot), Mays peaked between 31 and 35: bWARS of 10.5, 10.6, 11.0, 11.2, and 9.0. Very atypical; Trout's curve would seem to be more normal--like Mantle's, who slows down around 31.

DiMaggio now in the rear-view mirror.

clemenza, Thursday, 25 May 2023 04:09 (ten months ago) link

Genuinely a great guy.

Trout said players deal with mental issues more than people realize, but now some players have become more comfortable talking about it. That includes A’s reliever Trevor May, who was placed on the injured list with anxiety earlier this season and candidly spoke about his struggles with mental health. Trout’s former teammates Andrelton Simmons and Andrew Heaney have also opened up about mental health struggles in the past.

“You really don't see it when the guys are out there just playing, especially on a baseball field playing the game we love,” Trout said. “You don't know what's happening at home. You don't know what other guys are going through. It’s just about being able to just reach out and talk to people. I think it makes you feel comfortable. And to be able to get help is a big thing.”
