damn cliff lee is this year's randy johnson/cc sabathia (lefty starter has an "off" first half with an AL squad, immediately dominates the NL upon trade). today: complete game, 2 hits, 1 R (unearned), 11 K, no walks.

small sample set be damned, a .82 ERA and .72 WHIP over four starts is pretty sweet, not to mention 6 walks against 34 strikeouts.

make that a 0.68 ERA (his WHIP skyrocketed to 0.75)

Look, here's the biggest problem with the Howard deal ... it was, at this moment, utterly unnecessary. He was already under contract through 2011. What have the Phillies *possibly* gained by adding five years to that now? Cliff Lee is a separate issue.

How silly does Halladay feel right now? He willingly agreed to an extension that will end when he's the same age as Howard will be at the end of his new contract -- and he'll be making about half of what Howard makes per year. He obviously could have held them up for so much more money (especially since Lee had already been traded, so he knew they wouldn't be competing against each other for superstar pitcher money with the same team), and not least because he won't be sucking in four years.

one thing that kinda bugs is why on earth folx are all ZMGRFLMAOWTF @ howard's contract when Teixiera's is about the same (~90%), 3 years longgggger and Teix is just as old and not as good (IMHO).

Ryan Madson kicked a chair in frustration after he blew a save in the 10th inning on Wednesday in San Francisco.

The chair won.

Madson broke his right big toe and the Phillies placed him on the 15-day disabled list Friday just as they activated right-hander Brad Lidge, who had been on the DL since the season started. The Phillies recalled left-hander Antonio Bastardo from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to take Madson's place on the 25-man roster.

People always talk about 'closer mentality' which I dismiss as bullshit but Madson seems to prove that theory right time after time. His stuff is nasty and when hes a set up guy hes great. Seems like he blows saves on the regular tho.. Dont get it.

When Moyer retires and there's no active player left who's older than I am, I'm going to be a little sad.
