xp to map. not sure if i'm interpreting your post correctly, but my point was more that there was needless name calling on both sides, on this board -- within our small bubble, no wider political meaning intended. I don't think any one poster is actually an antisemite, an islamophobe, or a terrorism apologist. Bringing that into it so soon after the beheading, and directing it toward one poster who was closer to the attack than the others seemed undiplomatic (by 'closer' I just mean physically and in occupation. I understand that Euler was not the Frenchest French poster in France and this bothered some). I get that it was all motivated in part by the dread of what would be and was in fact France's racist and nationalistic response. But then it kept being weaponized against Euler to everyone's boredom in unrelated threads. It was over the top imo.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 22:15 (two years ago) link

on the extremely rare occasions i've killfiled someone, it was to keep me from drunkenly responding to them to no useful purpose

probably should use it more tbh

Is Tomboto around?

Deicide at Chuck E. Cheese (PBKR), Thursday, 13 May 2021 11:34 (two years ago) link

fwiw, Euler consistently doubled down on his view that laïcité is a neutral and good thing in French society that isn't weaponized against minority religious and ethnic populations. For that alone, anything he said was suspect in my book, since that viewpoint is so demonstrably wrong and fucked-up.

There were many times when people would say, "wow, this fanatical religious violence is terrible, but I also worry about the crackdown from the French state on normal adherents of Islam" and Euler would go, "BUT THEY'RE NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES, LAICITE BLAH BLAH." His Islamophobia and racism was transparent, and then when rightly accused of such, he would defend his viewpoint by hiding behind his own oppressed identity instead of owning his own bigotry.

Euler is not a black box, processing every bit of information through the same system. You can't look at a person and say "they are so wrong about this one thing, so they must be broken and useless in all other departments." Like all human beings, Euler is...more complex than that.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 16:42 (two years ago) link

anyway I am sympathetic to your side of that argument, and I understand why posters are passionate about it and such arguments get heated. It seemed to me that Euler was indeed responding to terrorism in the manner desired by terrorists for perpetuating a polarizing environment. But if the goal is to change someone's mind and try to break that cycle on some small level or figure out why they think something you feel is obviously wrong, it didn't work out. if the goal is to whittle the board down to the last poster who was never wrong about something and stubborn about it, then ok, we are converging.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:12 (two years ago) link

also, the ask, which I think can be summarized as "admit to yourself, a victim of bigotry, that you hold some beliefs weaponized by bigots", seems like a big one (to me)! and it might not be the best method for changing someone's mind on that belief. It may be, in a parallel to the act that got the teacher killed, needlessly polarizing and itself a tool used by bigots (I am in no way accusing anyone of using it that way in this instance).

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:20 (two years ago) link

I think the person who was most engaged in changing people's minds was Euler fwiw.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

I don't think that worked out for Euler, either.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:23 (two years ago) link

counterpoint: changing a bigot's mind isn't the table's responsibility, and calling out bigotry makes the board more welcoming, not less.

I'm not sure M. 14 Killfiles is the right vehicle for this argument.

Also as gyac has already mentioned, the moment where he brought up a different (non-participating iirc) poster's comment in another thread about not watching Eurovision crossed a bright line. You may disagree with people calling him an Islamophobe, but at least they were basing that judgment on his posts in the thread in question.

rob, Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:27 (two years ago) link

xp I'm not sure that changing his mind had to be the goal. "calling out bigotry makes the board more welcoming" might be too general to be universally true. Who knows, though, maybe it's true in more cases than it isn't, making it a good slogan to live by for those that prefer to live by slogans. We can always review the user numbers at the ILX quarterly meeting.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:39 (two years ago) link

ugh whatever. i feel fine sloganeering your precious ass with "get this cancel culture bullshit out of here" tbh

John Cooper of Christian rock band Skillet (map), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:41 (two years ago) link

xp killfiles might be better for preventing welcoming arguments such as "i'm the bigot? no, you're the bigot!" I'm not arguing that Euler was correct and those opposing him were entirely wrong here, anyway. I'm just doing some failure analysis on the situation where we lost a poster others have also admitted to enjoying in various threads on the board. boss wants me to goose the user numbers before the big Quarterly Meeting.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:45 (two years ago) link

pay posters to post, imo, with real american dollars. gotta make the goose golden

parenthetically yours, (Karl Malone), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:46 (two years ago) link

Euler last posted in March, maybe the people who enjoyed his posts so much might have taken the trouble to do a little search before crowbarring in their arguments about him leaving due to an argument in a thread almost nine months ago.

Scamp Granada (gyac), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:48 (two years ago) link

“It’s bad that this guy with his legitimate concerns about Muslims taking over France no longer posts here” - real get off my side stuff.

Imagine being this guy who made all the good music posts and discovering that people are mourning your contributions towards discussions about racism. Bit awkward.

Scamp Granada (gyac), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:50 (two years ago) link

xxp I thought "cancel culture" was about bigger stuff, such as a person's privileged livelihood. Here, i am talking about missing the one poster who'd eaten at and hated a particular pizza place i'd enjoyed during my childhood.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:51 (two years ago) link

anyhow I got to call Euler complex, which was my ultimate goal. I am comfortable leaving these posts here for the last ilxor to judge. we all know it will be silby, who will then celebrate the occasion by deleting all of the ilx code.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:59 (two years ago) link

I don't especially fancy revisiting the thread in question in any great depth but I had a quick glance at it and he accused me of celebrating death threats being made against people, so he was a fucking dick on that thread and he got his arse kicked, boohoo, but the guy carried on posting till March of this year! so what's all this about?

had no idea of threads where Euler went islamophobic (makes sense given that he lived in france) mostly know him from math threads, always enjoyed his posts

Connery: THERE CAN BE ONLY ONE!
Kozelek: yesterday i went on a walk in the highlands / drove 40 km on the left side of the road / bought a soda at the pub / had a pint at the pub / went back outside and it was overcast and chilly and i wished for a better jacket / it was 5 celsius / i went back into the pub

really would miss this supercilious prick like bleeding haemorrhoids if I'm going to be perfectly honest. But he'll be back, the suggestion that such a sturdy arrogant fucker was run off the board by small coterie of haters is absurd!

calzino, Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:26 (two years ago) link

hey, that's not right. some people don't even know they have haemorrhoids.

If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:34 (two years ago) link

He simply killfiled everyone else and wonders why no-one is posting anymore.

Halfway there but for you, Thursday, 13 May 2021 19:35 (two years ago) link

tbh i'm surprised posters have such negative opinions of some of Euler's posting. i just can't square them, but maybe he could help. it's almost like there were two Eulers, one the opposite or inverse of the other. complex guy.
