I hope LBI is ok.
And Euler too – my short-lived attempt at a French-language borad is even more dead now.

iirc he once admitted he has something like 14 posters killiefied. If this place became that much like hard work to him then I'm hardly surprised he's fucked off!― calzino, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 12:18 (two hours ago) bookmarkflaglink

Isn't it simpler to just skip reading a post when you see who wrote it than to killfile them?

Honest answer: Because you don't realize what/who you're reading until you're halfway through it?

point of killfile is to reduce hard work iirc

Get some bifocal spectacles and completely black out the upper section of the lens with gaffer tape. Hold your head to a 90 degree angle and you achieve instant message borad utopia.

14 users killfiled is hilarious.
i have only ever been tempted to killfile for one poster - not a poster who particularly annoyed me, they just posted frequently and in large amounts and i wasnt interested in reading their posts, but i never bothered my arse.

How nice for you, I personally don’t think him repeatedly implying several of us were apologists terrorism or that both my husband and I were antisemitic were acceptable arguments really, but we clearly have very different standards.

xp to map. not sure if i'm interpreting your post correctly, but my point was more that there was needless name calling on both sides, on this board -- within our small bubble, no wider political meaning intended. I don't think any one poster is actually an antisemite, an islamophobe, or a terrorism apologist. Bringing that into it so soon after the beheading, and directing it toward one poster who was closer to the attack than the others seemed undiplomatic (by 'closer' I just mean physically and in occupation. I understand that Euler was not the Frenchest French poster in France and this bothered some). I get that it was all motivated in part by the dread of what would be and was in fact France's racist and nationalistic response. But then it kept being weaponized against Euler to everyone's boredom in unrelated threads. It was over the top imo.

on the extremely rare occasions i've killfiled someone, it was to keep me from drunkenly responding to them to no useful purpose

― Deicide at Chuck E. Cheese (PBKR), Thursday, 13 May 2021 11:34 (one year ago) link
fwiw, Euler consistently doubled down on his view that laïcité is a neutral and good thing in French society that isn't weaponized against minority religious and ethnic populations. For that alone, anything he said was suspect in my book, since that viewpoint is so demonstrably wrong and fucked-up.
― Take, eat; this is my body. What I got, you got to get (the table is the table), Thursday, 13 May 2021 16:28 (one year ago) link
There were many times when people would say, "wow, this fanatical religious violence is terrible, but I also worry about the crackdown from the French state on normal adherents of Islam" and Euler would go, "BUT THEY'RE NOT FOLLOWING THE RULES, LAICITE BLAH BLAH." His Islamophobia and racism was transparent, and then when rightly accused of such, he would defend his viewpoint by hiding behind his own oppressed identity instead of owning his own bigotry.
― Take, eat; this is my body. What I got, you got to get (the table is the table), Thursday, 13 May 2021 16:32 (one year ago) link
Euler is not a black box, processing every bit of information through the same system. You can't look at a person and say "they are so wrong about this one thing, so they must be broken and useless in all other departments." Like all human beings, Euler is...more complex than that.
― If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 16:42 (one year ago) link
anyway I am sympathetic to your side of that argument, and I understand why posters are passionate about it and such arguments get heated. It seemed to me that Euler was indeed responding to terrorism in the manner desired by terrorists for perpetuating a polarizing environment. But if the goal is to change someone's mind and try to break that cycle on some small level or figure out why they think something you feel is obviously wrong, it didn't work out. if the goal is to whittle the board down to the last poster who was never wrong about something and stubborn about it, then ok, we are converging.
― If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:12 (one year ago) link
also, the ask, which I think can be summarized as "admit to yourself, a victim of bigotry, that you hold some beliefs weaponized by bigots", seems like a big one (to me)! and it might not be the best method for changing someone's mind on that belief. It may be, in a parallel to the act that got the teacher killed, needlessly polarizing and itself a tool used by bigots (I am in no way accusing anyone of using it that way in this instance).
― If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:20 (one year ago) link
I think the person who was most engaged in changing people's minds was Euler fwiw.
― Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:21 (one year ago) link
I don't think that worked out for Euler, either.
― If you value Vox, we have an axe (Sufjan Grafton), Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:23 (one year ago) link
counterpoint: changing a bigot's mind isn't the table's responsibility, and calling out bigotry makes the board more welcoming, not less.

I'm not sure M. 14 Killfiles is the right vehicle for this argument.
Also as gyac has already mentioned, the moment where he brought up a different (non-participating iirc) poster's comment in another thread about not watching Eurovision crossed a bright line. You may disagree with people calling him an Islamophobe, but at least they were basing that judgment on his posts in the thread in question.
― rob, Thursday, 13 May 2021 17:27 (one year ago) link
xp I'm not sure that changing his mind had to be the goal. "calling out bigotry makes the board more welcoming" might be too general to be universally true. Who knows, though, maybe it's true in more cases than it isn't, making it a good slogan to live by for those that prefer to live by slogans. We can always review the user numbers at the ILX quarterly meeting.
