oh, the new fucked up album is the most metal thing they've ever done and should appeal to at least some metal thread peeps

This new Paysage d'Hiver is pretty good! It definitely feels more "accessible', but I still dig it. The people that post reviews to the metal archives seem to haaaaate it though.

Anybody else remember The Absence? They were a super-Swedey melodeath act from Florida who made three albums for Metal Blade between 2005 and 2010, then disappeared. They came in 2018; they're on M-Theory Audio now, and their new one is coming out in late June. It sounds exactly like their old stuff, which is to say it sounds exactly like At The Gates and/or The Black Dahlia Murder. I like them probably more than I should.

haven't heard it yet but I smell gatekeeping...
this is very hilarious that they do that and kind of interesting from a conceptual perspective, no riffs = no metal is an interesting idea i've never thought about
yeah, agreed! had the same reaction where I laughed and then was like hmmmm🤔 and took a look at the guidelines, which I'd never read before:https://www.metal-archives.com/content/rules
the "side projects" thing already seems like a bit of a cop out. I guess that's why stuff like abruptum stays but those records wouldn't really fit otherwise. then there's this:
Additionally, there will be some non-metal bands featured on the site that we feel are still part of the metal scene despite not being metal themselves (usually darkwave, ambient, neo-classical and/or folk bands, examples being Mortiis, Elend, Autumn Tears, Stille Volk, etc). These bands are selected by the moderators in an admittedly arbitrary fashion, and their submission by normal users is discouraged. Please bear with us on this.
which is just funny

I tend to be unduly harsh on USBM, especially that of the one-man variety, but this is some good shit courtesy of Mick Barr and imo better than Demonic Wealth:

It's true, I've yet to overdose on cavernous death/doom, but this hangs with the best of them and the fact that it was recorded live gives it an unpredictable edge that serves the music well:

Unlikely press release:
SUNBOMB is a highly anticipated new musical alliance between two steadfast warriors of the U.S. hard rock/metal scene, Tracii Guns and Michael Sweet. They have put together an absolute blinder of a heavy metal album, melding influences of classic metal bands such as Black Sabbath and Judas Priest with Tracii's love of metal subgenres, specifically doom metal.

When I think Tracii Guns, I definitely think of specifically of doom metal, that's for sure.

I'm listening to the Sunbomb album right now and it's really fucking good. Full-on Trouble/Heaven and Hell doom/power metal. Unequivocal recommendation.

Grave Miasma album is 'fine', really, but with a lot of blackened death, ever since Behemoth clones started poring out of the woodwork, I find this style to be one I'm tired of atm (as opposed to Azarath, who are high octane energy).
Dordeduh is great from what I"ve had the chance to listen to, which is the first two tracks.
― Feta Van Cheese (Neanderthal), Sunday, 16 May 2021 13:12 (two years ago) link
It's even proggier than their debut, with fewer 'unclean' vox than before. They seem to be dead set on becoming Romania's answer to Enslaved, which is not a bad thing as far as I'm concerned.
― pomenitul, Sunday, 16 May 2021 13:17 (two years ago) link
I really like the clean vox deployed and the atmosphere. Enslaved was my first thought, coincidentally enough, when listening to the first few tracks.

Max Cavalera has a new band, Go Ahead And Die, with his son Igor and Khemmis's Zach Coleman on drums. The self-titled debut comes out June 11; it's primitive, crudely produced caveman thrash. Some of you may like it better than anything he's done since Arise. I still say Cavalera Conspiracy are a great band, particularly on their last two albums, but this is really good, too.

Apostasy - Death Returnhttps://f4.bcbits.com/img/a1057899320_10.jpgChilean power metal/thrash with great production, straightahead but well-played riffs and gruffly barked vox, nailing a retrofitted mid-'80s evil vibe IMO (sometime you can def tell an album by its cover):https://fallentemple.bandcamp.com/album/death-return

the last one is going to be hard to top imo. you can definitely hear the retro heavy metal influences mentioned in the promo blurb on the teaser track and that def threw me off for a sec. but I'm curious to hear how this plays out over a whole record.
