If it helps for debugging/diagnostics, on that covid thread as of now, the message immediately after the "Click here to load all messages" has this url on the "link" link:

Mostly Apolitical Thread for Discussing/Venting our Rational/Irrational COVID-19 Fears and Experiences in 2020

if I click that link, the View Previous Page URL is:

Mostly Apolitical Thread for Discussing/Venting our Rational/Irrational COVID-19 Fears and Experiences in 2020

clicking that just takes me to the thread as if I'd just opened it from ILE/SNA. Shows the first 50/last 50 message (or whatever the number is) with Click Here to load all messages in the middle

If I do the same thing on this thread, which works, the View Previous Page URL is:

Ideas for ILX

So it looks like your bug is the missing bookmarkedmessageid URL parameter.

CP Radio Gorgeous (Colonel Poo), Saturday, 8 May 2021 01:58 (two years ago) link

Thanks CP - I think that is now fixed — you should be able to View Previous Page continuously right the way back to the first post in a thread.

There's a chance that means on poll threads you'll get back to the start and still won't see the poll options, i'll need to confirm that but it seems like an edge case right now.

Idea for ILX: In search results, show the number of posts in a thread and when it was last posted to. Would make it easier to revive the most active thread for people or topics with many threads.

number of posts, especially

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 06:45 (two years ago) link

Good idea, also "sort by recently posted to" isn't the same as "sort by most recently created" so would be good to have those as two different options.

Bobo Honk, real name, no gimmicks (Doctor Casino), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 16:35 (two years ago) link

thanks to Colonel Poo for figuring it out! I've stumbled over it myself in the past and always failed to later figure out what caused it so it could be fixed. Been about for years!

That search thing is a great idea but also pretty hard to do, sorry

stet, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 17:21 (two years ago) link

i think each post should be tokenized and traded with cryptocurrency. we've all been posting without profit for too long, and this would allow us to establish clear provenance for our posts while innovating in the downstream-contract asset transfer sector. for example, a simple metadata layer could guarantee that i get a 10% cut from future sales of this post, no matter how many time this asset is traded.

it's either that or we all get paid $.000000004 per post view. problem with that is that it's not inherently profitable and innovative like crypto-ilx, so we'd have to secure outside funding if we're all going to get paid a living wage for posting (and we SHOULD be paid a living wage for posting). luckily i know these cryptodudes who recently got rich so

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 18:30 (two years ago) link

people like to complain about losing posters, less posting activity, etc, but if we were just paid a living wage i think those trends would immediately reverse

Zach_TBD (Karl Malone), Wednesday, 12 May 2021 18:31 (two years ago) link

It should be the other way round. No payment for posts. Pay people to read.

Crypto-ilx would result in an interesting ethical dilemma wherein ppl want to write long threads about the carbon footprint of ILX posts and debate the ethics of posting under the new system, but the debate itself uses vast amounts of energy.

Lily Dale, Wednesday, 12 May 2021 18:56 (two years ago) link

personally, every single post i make it fraught with ethical tension!

would it be possible to extend the colors specified on "Customize Site New Answers" to the individual board pages as well?

one month passes...

I was visiting the thread https://www.ilxor.com/ILX/ThreadSelectedControllerServlet?boardid=77&threadid=70606 which is filled with dead links to graphic images on defunct sites or dead pages and wondered if ilx could perform periodic scans for dead links and edit them to replace the link with the words {dead link}. Maybe time the scans to coincide with the down time between when the Aus/NZ crowd goes to bed and the western Europe/UK/Irish Republic crowd is rolling out of bed.

Stet, would it be possible to change the FP system so that any FP lodged by Poster X against Poster Y automatically replaces any previous FP by Poster X against Poster Y? That way old FPs wouldn't have to be cleared out and a correct, current total could always be found. Not sure if that ever got suggested before.

It would be neat if after a poll ended there was a little asterisk or something next to the option that you voted for, in case you can't remember.

It would also be neat if you could change your vote before the poll ended - sometimes the conversation changes my mind!

Surely this has been suggested before, but a button that updates all your bookmarks to the current moment would be so wonderful. I have not really looked at ilx since September, and while I don't want to lose all my bookmarks, clicking through all of them just to scroll down and click bookmark on the last post is a serious chore.
