The 1986 John Cleese vehicle Clockwise has an absolutely terrible poster, proposing that a huge image of a soggy, naked Cleese is all that's needed to get punters into cinemas around the globe.

Imagine if one of these pieces of concept art had been commissioned and finished, though:

I was just coming here to post the Booksmart one - there's a higher-res view on Amazon, but it doesn't really increase the resemblance of anyone.

I feel like a lot of the "retro" ones don't have enough stupid bullshit for the characters to be doing, or don't give enough visual room for it somehow. In the old ones it's like Where's Waldo --- if you were standing in line outside the theater staring at one, you could have really kept yourself occupied for a few minutes. Points for including a banner-flying biplane, though.

^ not to scale

Not eligible for the thread per se, but enjoyable nevertheless: Italian poster for the theatrical release of 'Concerto con delitto,' about the "supergiallo" Tenente Columbo

Movies that should have had posters like this, just to set the audience's expectations: Hudson Hawk, Bonfire Of The Vanities, Ishtar.

Disappointed these never happened:

American Hustle needed a poster like those ITT.

Debut feature from Martin Campbell, the director of Goldeneye, The Mask Of Zorro, Casino Royale, the original 1985 Edge Of Darkness, and the American remake of Edge Of Darkness:

The Sex Thief (1973)

(Despite having left New Zealand years before Taika Waititi was born, Campbell also gave 36-year-old Waititi his first role in an American blockbuster.)

Wiki says that for the US release in 1976 (as Her Family Jewels), producers inserted hardcore scenes involving other actors, to suggest the cast were actually having sex. That is nuts!
