Was curious about my pre-order from Infinite Fog and saw this on the Bandcamp page:

Message from INFINITE FOG PRODUCTIONS: Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we are temporarily unable to mail records and other physical merchandise. We appreciate your support, and we will ship your order as soon as we can.

Pretty vague. Anyone get their LSD reissue?

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 19 May 2021 19:11 (two years ago) link

yes, a couple of weeks ago even

StanM, Wednesday, 19 May 2021 19:49 (two years ago) link

Hmmm. OK, thanks!

Paul Ponzi, Wednesday, 19 May 2021 21:56 (two years ago) link

Same here (NL), was notified of the shipment by mail early this month and received it a couple days later

willem, Thursday, 20 May 2021 08:13 (two years ago) link

... and it's fine - remaster sounds better than my original CD, booklet contains lyrics and short bits by Steven Stapleton and Danny Hyde, artwork maybe a bit darker than I would have liked, square poster of the cover art. Bonus CD - had to get it because I'm a completionist but these alt versions, while sometimes interesting, are always disappointing in the end, aren't they?

StanM, Thursday, 20 May 2021 11:01 (two years ago) link

A month till my WaxTrax LSD pressing gets sent, so the message up thread has lessenned my regret at not going for the nearer and cheaper Infinite fog release.

I was interested in the ColdSpring Coil compilation I saw advertised, but if they are a label with some unpleasant connections, I'll save my money and ask if there are any homemade introductions to Coil, I should look out for?

bought MTPITDV1 on LP a few weeks ago, to support a local record store, so thats been a lovely listen whilst waiting for a parcel with a chicago postmark.

xxpost Hey Willem tried to reach u via ILX mail but seems you’re not on there? Anyhow — Thank you for the kind words. Unfortunately I don’t have any of those cd’s anymore. Gone in the mists of time...

Now...back to Coil.

xxxpost Hey JV, not sure why ilx mail wouldn't work but thanks for letting me know!

willem, Thursday, 20 May 2021 18:36 (two years ago) link

@Hamildan this is a good introductory best of type compilation - https://www.discogs.com/Coil-The-Golden-Hare-With-A-Voice-Of-Silver/release/194197

paolo, Friday, 21 May 2021 07:41 (two years ago) link

Via IF's bandcamp mail:

All the US orders will be shipped during the next several days

willem, Friday, 21 May 2021 08:19 (two years ago) link

@paolo: that's the same compilation that Hamildan was talking about. Your link goes to the original version which is now deleted, the reissues are on Cold Spring.

joni mitchell jarre (anagram), Friday, 21 May 2021 08:29 (two years ago) link

Yeah, that comp is essential.

Paul Ponzi, Friday, 21 May 2021 10:30 (two years ago) link

Oops. Well here's an NTS mix that isn't exactly a best of but is a good introduction - https://www.nts.live/shows/in-focus/episodes/in-focus-coil-31st-october-2020

The WaxTrax LSD on bandcamp is high res (96k/24bit) fyi for snake oil fans.

Noel Emits, Friday, 21 May 2021 11:13 (two years ago) link

Buried at the bottom of the Wax Trax newsletter I almost deleted:

This is an update for all our Coil pre-orders. We have run into an issue with the upcoming release of Coil’s, Love’s Secret Domain. Like many other labels over this past year, we are getting word of some unforeseen delays in the record pressing supply chain. There has also been a quality issue in production that we weren’t happy with and as result the release will be pushed back approximately four weeks into July. The record pressing supply chain was out of our hands, but the quality issue is something we feel strongly about and ultimately we will have a superior product to pass along to you all.

Wonder if the CD will also be delayed

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 16:54 (two years ago) link

I'd imagine CD will be on time. I've run into the vinyl issue constantly in the past few months. All last year I had quality problems with various plants. And I was recently given an estimated 40 week turn around from a plant for a record.

Oblique Strategies, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 18:09 (two years ago) link

That's insane! 40 weeks? Most bands are broken up by then!

I ordered both CD and LP so hopefully the CDs arrive on time, at least.

Paul Ponzi, Tuesday, 1 June 2021 18:21 (two years ago) link

My copy of the Loves Secret Domain 3LP on Infinite Fog arrived. I'll keep this positive and say that I'm glad I bought the Wax Trax version too.

Oblique Strategies, Thursday, 3 June 2021 19:06 (two years ago) link

i'm glad i avoided temptation.

i fear vinyl-geddon may be on the horizon. 40 week turnarounds and cost of manufacturing reaching a point where the dealer price is going to breach what shops are prepared to pay (at least for new / unknown / very niche artists).

I bought both too, and am still awaiting my IF order, so give it to me straight: shoddy packaging, bad sq, or both?

Paul Ponzi, Thursday, 3 June 2021 23:47 (two years ago) link

I know you're not asking me but I have the CD and no complaints about either (except the artwork being a bit dark maybe) ?

StanM, Friday, 4 June 2021 04:29 (two years ago) link

the cd artwork looks like it was made at kinkos

adam, Friday, 4 June 2021 12:46 (two years ago) link

OK, So the artwork is definitely dark on the vinyl too. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt and say that it may be closer to Stapleton's original art but the band must have increased the saturation for a reason to bring out the vivid red that I always associate with this record.
The mastering and pressing are "fine". They exist in that uncanny valley where there's nothing fundamentally wrong about them but they lack life and spark. Your mileage may vary with that assessment depending on how much of an audiophile you are. I'm not able to pinpoint specifically what I DON'T like other than that it's the first time I've listened to Loves Secret Domain and it's felt like a bit of a chore.
The additional tracks are interesting but not really essential. If you loved Swanyard then you'll probably enjoy them. Only the guitar only version of Teenage Lightning feels like something that could sit on Stolen and Contaminated Songs.
The wooden box was nice and given how much people are trying to flip them for it's probably a better investment than most cryptocurrency...

Oblique Strategies, Friday, 4 June 2021 18:05 (two years ago) link

For sure. Coil prices are consistently crazy and they seem to have a lot of very well off fans. I sold a few Coil records early in the pandemic when I was in a big panic about having no income and my copies of Musick To Play In The Dark 1 & 2 raised enough to cover my mortgage for a few months.

― stirmonster, Thursday, 3 June 2021 20:16 (two days ago) bookmarkflaglink

Off topic, but I'm sure we've all noticed that the price of vinyl has been going up in recent years. If vinyl becomes less popular with mainstream consumers (I know that sounds super snobby but there you go) then will it become less expensive for underground artists to put records out? My understanding is that the main reason that the price of vinyl has gone up and pressing is taking longer is because of major labels clogging up the pressing plants.

My CD copy of LSD is finally in the post after having ordered it in April

i fear it is going to be a very long time before the majors jump off what they perceive to be a vinyl gravy train. i also have a feeling purchasers of major label vinyl have a more price elastic relationship with it, so are more likely to be prepared to pay very high prices. i hope i am proved wrong.

stirmonster, Saturday, 5 June 2021 10:33 (two years ago) link

My take - The smaller indies who are pressing under 2000 copies of records are about to stop pressing vinyl.
Let's say they release 5 records per year with an average of 1000 copies pressed. That means they're out $50,000 (plus anything they advanced artists for recording) for up to 18 months before seeing a return from distributors.
I don't see how that's tenable for most labels. It's peanuts to a major label though. They'll churn out Ghostbusters soundtracks for Record Store Day as long as people are willing to buy them.

Regarding pricing. I honestly think it was kept somewhat artificially low for a long time but the Discogs flippers have proven that people will pay. Especially for re-issues or limited editions. Example - I recently missed the announcement for a new press of a record for '92. The pre-order from the label ($19.99) sold out so any stores who had copies started selling it for $70. The label did another pressing to stop the gouging but yeah. People are paying that money pretty regularly it seems.

Oblique Strategies, Saturday, 5 June 2021 20:10 (two years ago) link

yup the Diseno Corbusier reissues on Vinyilssimo immediately went oop and now are up to $70 each for new copies

sleeve, Saturday, 5 June 2021 21:40 (two years ago) link

but i think the number of people prepared to pay $70 is very low. looking at Diseño Corbusier's El Alma De La Estrella repress as an example, it has sold 10 times on discogs in 2 years.

£36.83 Average
£37.23 Median
£43.39 Highest
£25.98 Lowest

i agree people will pay HIGH prices for limited editions and reissues but it is depressing with regard to new releases. it can't end well.

stirmonster, Sunday, 6 June 2021 00:57 (two years ago) link

^^ that's the one I missed, cheapest copy shipped in the US is $86. I do realize it was reissued in 2012, it's been a while.

sleeve, Sunday, 6 June 2021 01:07 (two years ago) link

one month passes...

Excellent intereview with Stephen Thrower.

I do however vehemently disagree with Mark Pilkington's take on "Further Back And Faster" which has always been one of my LSD highlights, and also, while I am very crusty averse the didgeridoo use on LSD never bothered me.

noted the Love's Secret Domain remastered from original sources seems like shots fired against the Infinite Fog release.

lovely interview, seem like nice boys.

The good people at Waxtrax sent me a bandcamp DL code as the vinyl is delayed, so been enjoying the remaster ahead of one day receiving the vinyl.

my opinionation (Hamildan), Wednesday, 14 July 2021 09:07 (two years ago) link

can you buy the waxtrax remaster from anywhere in the UK?

I managed to score a vinyl copy of MtPItD from juno recently btw

my remastered wax trax Love's Secret Domain CD is almost here, just got the EU import bill - I'll compare it with the Infinite Fog one once I get it

StanM, Monday, 26 July 2021 10:29 (two years ago) link

I so adore the concept of COIL hanging out with the Butthole Surfers.

Alex in NYC, Monday, 26 July 2021 13:44 (two years ago) link

okay, my four CDs of Love's Secret Domain: 1991 < 2001 < infinite fog < wax trax

the Infinite Fog remaster doesn't sound bad at all, but the wax trax one clearly sounds better/more defined/stereo in my headphones.

StanM, Monday, 2 August 2021 13:46 (two years ago) link

oh - and if your CD player can handle it, the wax trax one has a hidden track before the first one
