I like Black Oak Arkansas a lot; Mangrum is a whole lot closer to Captain Beefheart, vocally, than I would ever have guessed from photos alone. And yeah, they had some pretty great songs.

The Mahogany Rush discussion is interesting. I remember being a kid and seeing t-shirts, posters, etc. featuring their logo in ads in old rock music magazines but was always kind of mystified as to who they were or what their deal was -- as mentioned above they never seemed to get airplay on the classic rock stations, and didn't have any "hits"... my only other reference for them was seeing a couple of their cassettes at the home of a guy who had grown up in Chile. I wonder if they were a relatively big deal in parts of s. america.

Same goes for Uriah Heep and Black Oak Arkansas!

Uriah Heep are another band whose 21st century output is astonishingly good (assuming you're into mainstream-ish hard rock). IMO their current work is comparable, but superior, to Deep Purple's.

XP Got a lol out of his guitarist sheepishly ceding his mic to her.

Heart's performance in Cal Jam II is fire. Fun to watch Roger Fisher with his guitar-shredding and whammy bar action.
