I suspect I love a few songs that belong here and I've just filed them on my hard drive under power pop. Would take a lot of time figuring out which ones are which.

clemenza, Monday, 17 May 2021 02:35 (two years ago) link

Example: I have four Lilys songs, including the one you posted, which to my ears doesn't sound all that different from this--but maybe there's some crucial difference I don't hear.

I absolutely LOVE Fudge and was trying to promote them on one of the "lost 90s bands" sort of threads I'd revived not long ago! That song doesn't exactly follow the same strum pattern that I was trying to zero in on specifically here, but the band is definitely a big deal in this little universe of 90s indie I'm obsessed with.

Evan, Monday, 17 May 2021 03:02 (two years ago) link

That rhythm honestly makes me think of this, which is maybe at the front end of the era of this strum.

Yeah I hear it, especially right in the opening

Left, Monday, 17 May 2021 19:31 (two years ago) link

I would imagine Guided By Voices/Robert Pollard has about a million of these.

Assume this has been talked about somewhere on here.

In 2023, shoegaze is bigger than ever. Major label signees, unprecedented Billboard charts, record streaming figures, and mainstream visibility. The sound, look, and reach of the genre are changing. And TikTok is the engine.

tbh I've never really known what is meant by shoegaze. It's just indie rock surely?

I mis-read this thread title as 'Shoegaze Jungle'.

you gotta roll with the pΔ…czki to get to what's real (snoball), Tuesday, 26 December 2023 12:22 (three months ago) link

xp indie rock with guitar processed into textures, and vocals mixed lower than guitars often

genre name obviously highlighting the centrality of effects pedals to the sound

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 26 December 2023 12:32 (three months ago) link

Sounds like indie rock to me.

This is what I've got from recent years that include both tags:

1. Flyying Colours – You Never Know (Poison City, 2023)
2. Alvvays – Blue Rev (Transgressive, 2022)
3. Drop Nineteens – Hard Light (Wharf Cat, 2023)
4. Soft Kill – Dead Kids, R.I.P. City (Cercel Social, 2020)
5. Soft Science – Lines (Shelflife, 2023)
6. Hatchie – Giving the World Away (Secretly Canadian, 2022)
7. Say Sue Me – The Last Thing Left (Damnably, 2022)

Not recently. I kind of suspect people make up genre names because they're embarrassed to admit they are fans of indie.

The Italian Yob (Tom D.), Tuesday, 26 December 2023 20:49 (three months ago) link

why do you suspect that

brimstead, Tuesday, 26 December 2023 21:04 (three months ago) link

I’m very much in favour of indie rock, I just don’t think the Shins are shoegaze

assert (matttkkkk), Tuesday, 26 December 2023 22:13 (three months ago) link

(xp) I'm a bit out of touch, is indie rock considered good again?

The Italian Yob (Tom D.), Tuesday, 26 December 2023 22:32 (three months ago) link

yeah it’s been getting a lot better, actually, gen z bands have way better taste

brimstead, Tuesday, 26 December 2023 22:49 (three months ago) link

yeah there's nothing distinctive about the way my bloody valentine sound compared to generic 'indie rock'

shoegaze has been an easily recognizable style of guitar rock with distinctive qualities for three decades

this feels like a very ilx-bubble sort of comment...

Evan, Wednesday, 27 December 2023 15:57 (three months ago) link

Very probably, I blame years of entrenched ILX indie-hatred.

The Italian Yob (Tom D.), Wednesday, 27 December 2023 16:00 (three months ago) link

I'm sure we could recommend some albums based on what you already like, if you were open to giving it a shot.
