Right now my typical consumption is one first thing in the morning, another around maybe 11, and potentially one in the afternoon depending how much I'm working.

I agree Pret cof is good. Used to be my regular go-to when I worked near one, definitely preferable to Starbucks.

Oh and I got the Fellow Prismo (attachment to Aeropress to make espresso-like cof.) I tried it today and it was good.
Pain in the ass to hand-grind 20g to espresso grind levels, though. I could feel the desire for an electric grinder arise. I'll put a vise in my kitchen to hold my hand grinder before I buy an expensive-ass electric espresso grinder though.
― lukas, Thursday, 29 April 2021 22:28 (three years ago) link
lol i tried a hand grinder once, that belonged to someone else, and the length of time to grind one cup's worth of coffee was comical - i honestly felt that i was the victim of a joke
― One Of The Bad Guys (Tracer Hand), Thursday, 29 April 2021 22:41 (three years ago) link
It's totally fine if you're grinding for just a cup of coffee!
For espresso though ... uh ... maybe I'll get used to it?
― lukas, Thursday, 29 April 2021 22:43 (three years ago) link
Do you have to grind it that fine for the Prismo? I thought they were just a way to do a right-side-up Aeropress without the water running through the grounds into the cup. I was thinking about getting one, but as a hand grinder, that makes me less interested.
― beard papa, Friday, 30 April 2021 06:35 (three years ago) link
I've mentioned before but I've been using the same Krups grinder since 2003. I know how many seconds to grind the beans to get to the desired state depending on brew method. I will cry when it dies.

(also worth mentioning is that I've lived in 20+ different places since 2003, so my dedication to coffee and fresh ground beans is thoroughly understood)

We were really excited when they added Prets to some of the NJ Turnpike rest stops since that's our route on the way to my folks (not only best coffee option but best food option). We had a running joke where we would prattle on about Pret like effete city snobs (which I guess we are) whenever we approached a rest stop.
― longtime caller, first time listener (man alive), Friday, 30 April 2021 12:18 (three years ago) link
I'm definitely an effete snob when it comes to coffee. I've accepted my fate. I used to be perfectly happy with burnt truck-stop coffee, but my eyes of been opened and I can't go back. Of the NYC chains that are relatively easy to find in midtown, for drip coffee, my top 3 were Bluestone Lane (priciest), Gregory's, and Pret (best value). Luckily I could usually find at least one of those nearby, or sometimes a smaller boutique shop.
― o. nate, Friday, 30 April 2021 13:14 (three years ago) link
Recently I splurged and bought a 1/2 lb of Maui estate beans. I think it's the most expensive variety my coffee shop sells, and they only carry it at Easter and Christmas. I found the taste to be very light with what I'd call a slight sourness compared to my usual Papua New Guinea bean. I liked it more the more times I tried it, but I won't make a habit of it because of the availability issue (I guess I could order some but I'm faithful to my neighborhood coffee shop) and overall I still prefer my Papua, which also is about 1/2 the price.

i have had the same blend autoshipping to me every two weeks from Olympia Coffee Roasters for basically the whole pandemic, it's fine, I had a moment yesterday where I desperately wanted diner coffee and eggs and hash browns and felt like I would gladly saw off my own leg to go eat at a breakfast place

I mean I’m still gonna feel like it’s sketch to sit and eat at a restaurant until I’m not just maximally immune but the actual caseload in the area is much lower, presumably the likelihood of breakthrough infection increases with exposure events. Even if it just goes from 0.0001 to 0.001. Idk, I’ll go back to brunch maybe in the fall.

I've had brunch sitting outside a couple of times this spring. It didn't feel too sketchy.

No, you only need to grind that fine if you want to approximate espresso. (Which it does surprisingly well.)

What is the rationale behind blooming via 1) a tiny bit of water for one minute, then pouring the rest over vs. 2) pouring all the water over and stirring after one minute? I've always done #2 but seems like #1 is how most people suggest.
― ヽ(´ー`)┌ (CompuPost), Sunday, 30 May 2021 13:06 (two years ago) link
i dont think it matters
― lag∞n, Sunday, 30 May 2021 14:01 (two years ago) link
blooming lets the co2 escape when the hot water hits the grounds (this matters less for old beans), and you won't get proper extraction til the co2 is out.

Quit coffee about 6 months ago after being big coffee guy into very small batch new guinea, oaxaca, diff ethiopian women's collective farms etc. w/e and yeah it's had a huge positive impact on my mind and ability to get through the day. It's a shame, but whatever. I have a cup of matcha a couple times a week. Anyway, yeah, quitting coffee and intermittent fasting really cleared up a bunch of diff things that were going on with me

It's kind of crazy how much difference the water quality can make to the taste of coffee. I've always been too cheap to use bottled water to make coffee, but it doesn't make sense to pay good money for beans and then use lousy tap water that ruins the flavor.
― o. nate, Friday, 10 September 2021 20:06 (two years ago) link
get a charcoal filter jug thing cheaper than bottled water for sure

I absolutely love my tap but the very sporadic “btw you shouldn’t have drank it last week because it had the chlorine of pool water, sorry about the stomach issues” notification makes me question my choices
― mh, Saturday, 11 September 2021 02:15 (two years ago) link
The water utility sends us a very smug mailer every year about our water quality with gorgeous photos of our protected watershed and I’m smug as a result and brew my coffee with it right out of the tap

I have one of those Brita water pitcher filters. Maybe I should upgrade to a better one. I noticed the taste especially last week because (1) we'd just come back from a vacation in the mountains, where the tap water was very good and (2) there had been a boil water advisory before we got back and as a result I think the water had even more chlorine in it than usual.

A couple of months ago I splurged for one of those Fellow digital pour-over kettles. This morning, someone I love very much and forgive accidentally ruined it. I don't know if I can bring myself to outlay that kind of money again. I used the shitty old non-gooseneck electric kettle this morning and tbh I didn't notice much difference in taste, but the speed at which it heated and the ability to hold temp was really nice.

I like the extra control of pouring from a gooseneck pitcher. I just have a simple metal gooseneck pitcher that doesn't do anything except hold the hot water that I've boiled in my cheapo electric kettle. They seem to be hard to find online but shouldn't go for more than $20.

A coffee shop opened around the corner from me. The owner is truly passionate about coffee. The espresso is the best I've had in this town. But sometimes I just want a cup of cof, and dude is obsessed with natural process coffee that tastes like socks. Oh well. I'll enjoy the hell out of the espresso.
