was “winterlong” intended for release before it appeared on decade? odd to be that such a lush huge sounding track was just filed away

it’s interesting that “don’t cry no tears” was one of the first songs he wrote back in 1964. I guess a live version was originally going to appear on Decade?

I imagine the Whitten era Crazy Horse tried recording "Winterlong" at some point (maybe in summer of 69), but maybe it never quit got there. They certainly nail it on the Fillmore East disc.

Here's the embryonic "Don't Cry" ...

interesting, per the Decade wiki, I'd never read anything about it being on TNN

"Winterlong" – 3:05

Previously unreleased; recorded in November 1973 and appeared on certain acetate pressings of Tonight's the Night

haha, imagine if all that knowledge was actually useful!

I'm glad "Soldier" has a second life on this record, rather than languishing unheard on the Journey Through the Past soundtrack.
On the other hand, "Ambulance Blues" may be my favourite Neil Young song, but it wouldn't fit on Decade, it needs to stay at the end of side 2 of On the Beach.

Apparently 'Winterlong' was recorded at Larrabee Studios in Hollywood on 10/17/69. I imagine it was intended for the second Crazy Horse album that was swallowed up by After the Gold Rush.

aha, yeah that makes sense. maybe that recording will be on Early Daze, which Neil has been talking about forever ... might have the crazy horse version of "helpless," and early take of whitten's "look at all the things," maybe some additional recordings from the 1970 tour.

I'd say it's pretty useful tyler. I mean, it's much easier to hear what you have to say than to wade through some of the other, more toxic Neil related websites out there.

I believed Neil when he said that 'Helpless' didn't get recorded in Shakey, until he somehow 'found' another CH take of 'Birds' with the second verse, haha. I really hope Early Daze actually comes out at some point, in some format, etc.

that first crazy horse album rules I would love to hear if there were any outtakes from that (though I guess that wouldn't really be Neil's to release)

a few outtakes can be found on this (kinda scarce) compilation: https://www.discogs.com/Crazy-Horse-Scratchy-The-Complete-Reprise-Recordings/master/394322

Yeah totally, and also the web is just so fucked now I don’t even know how to FIND the comprehensive “lo-tech but full of info” web 1.0 fan sites that are filled with this kind of stuff

Anyway, thanks, tyler! The Neil well runs deep!
