JOE ROGAN VS. CARLOS MENCIA... FITE!!!

Joe Rogan is basically an entertainer who talks a lot of shit. People who see him as smart or thoughtful are essentially people who have an even shakier, less informed basis for thinking about the world than Rogan does, because at least Rogan reads things sometimes, just so he'll have something to talk about.

its wild to watch how, when hes confronted with clear evidence that he was wrong, how quickly he goes through the process of "this doesnt apply to what we were talking about" --> "who even said this, whats the source" --> "there must be underreporting". whats the term for that conspiracist thought process where contrary evidence just proves their point further?

nobody like my rap (One Eye Open), Friday, 14 January 2022 17:17 (two years ago) link

yeah so my older brother is a huge JoeBro and sometimes he really gets into it about something fucking dumb and I find you can actually pin him down on something specific and point out how they're wrong and sometimes they will accept it and move on. BUT then they watch one more episode of the Rogan podcast and they're back on it again

one example - he thinks that Covid deaths are greatly overreported, and buys fully into that "if you get shot in the face while you have Covid, it's a Covid death" talking point. I tell him okay, lets look at the deaths per capita rate and see if there's an increase, because if deaths per capita are notably going up, then it's concrete evidence that *something* is killing a bunch more people. (Anyway, he sends me a chart and tells me it dismantles my argument, and he gets real cocky about it too. The problem: his chart ends at 2019. When you look at 2020 and 2021, then yes indeed a LOT MORE PEOPLE ARE DYING. He then invents some weird bullshit about how these charts aren't really accurate for a few years anyway (??) but that yes, his chart does not prove anything. HE HAS SENT ME THIS CHART FIVE TIMES NOW. There is no reasoning with these people.

A True White Kid that can Jump (Granny Dainger), Friday, 14 January 2022 17:28 (two years ago) link

will never ever ‘get’ this dude. tbf the only time I listened to him for more than a 3-5 minute clip is a good bit of the David Lee Roth interview. he didn’t really say much, just let DLR rip (smart move). but he’s not even funny? and he was a standup? (tho I did I love Newsradio and enjoyed his character). if you’re not a already firmly in this zeitgeist-y right-leaning, online conspiracy prone, masculinity in cRiSiS bro shit, I simply can not wrap my head around the appeal.

and yet! I’ve got like 3 friends, early-to-mid 40s, pretty liberal, definitely Democratic voters, who I understand listen, at least on occasion. maybe even semi-regularly, depending on guest? and only one seemed even a touch embarrassed. what am I missing?

idk I think he's just good at portraying that free thinker/"I do my own research" persona. he's also like, a living mancave. all he really knows about is UFC & getting fucked up. I get the appeal I guess but the fact that people spend like 4 hours a week listening to him is insane. he's just so remarkably dull and dumb

frogbs, Friday, 14 January 2022 19:10 (two years ago) link

Nothing.

Kinda wild to look back on how his Newsradio character incorporated his actual love of conspiracies, and how differently that dude would come across now.

Glower, Disruption & Pies (kingfish), Friday, 14 January 2022 19:21 (two years ago) link

its such a perfect distillation of the way that mainstream podcasting has devolved into this total glass-eyed void of content-free nothingness. makes the listener feel smart without asking them to do or think anything, presents conversations with standups and things that are adjacent to comedy without actually being funny, etc. just sort of presents an endlessly reassuring self-serving mantra to listeners: "you are smart... you are normal... you are smart... you are normal..."

going back to what frogs said about his brother above, I mean, you can see clear as day that 500,000+ more people died in the US from 2019 - 2020 and that this type of increase of that significance had not happened in modern times...but it doesn't matter.

one of those same clowns was arguing with Howard Forman that deaths actually increased more in 2004-2006 and he replied basically "the hell are you talking about, the increase was way lower, I'm looking at it right now". they don't care.

and there comes Rogan.

Maybe covid just made them all die of other things, like heart attacks and lung failure and cancer and stuff, faster, think about that. Or maybe all those other years they just undercounted by 500k or so.

I am laughing at this bit in Mencia's Wikipedia page though

Mike Byoff of Gawker said of Mencia, "Not only does he steal jokes from classic comedians but he's needlessly racist and had [sic] no sense of comedic timing whatsoever."[17]

mostly because it implies that there are comedians who are necessarily racist

castanuts (DJP), Tuesday, 25 January 2022 15:56 (two years ago) link

tbf, some comics built their whole careers out of being racist, so it's necessary for them

Uhhh 70 is quite a few

frogbs, Saturday, 5 February 2022 23:52 (two years ago) link

I get what he's saying about, I dunno, saying the name of a Richard Pryor album (that's as far as I made it, because fuck Joe Rogan) or quoting Huck Finn or whatever and having that taken out of context, reduced to just the use of the word, but there is no way all 70 of those mentions had a similarly defensible context. Either way, what made him make this pseudo-apology is that video going around of someone documenting every single one of his uses of the n-word, which is fitting, because even if he *had* a good defense for all 70 of those documented uses, well, that means he's been the victim of ... misinformation. Which shows how it works once you recklessly (or intentionally!) release shit into the wilds of the internet. You reap what you sow, Joe.
