I think I also saw a bit of a jump cut in Gregg's stream so that part might have been prerecorded?

can confirm that i didn't hallucinate this

one thing I really love about this series is how all the various parts are played by actors from totally different backgrounds with varying levels of acting skill. including a bunch of people you'll never see in a comedy show again. what other show has a cast like this?

the real MVP is joe estevez. his improv skills are underrated. although it's impossible to work out how much is scripted and improv.

Hmmmmm (jamiesummerz), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 09:07 (two years ago) link

I doubt much of anything that they have Estevez do (outside of Decker) is scripted in terms of learning lines, but iirc he's briefed more than the other regulars on the overall plot.

You get the impression, by contrast, Michael Matthews was given basically no prep for this: while his glee and confidence as Laroux in earlier stuff sell the character as created, here it felt like the actor was told nothing, so his own haplessness at improv sold Laroux' out-of-depthness.

during "The LaRoux Report" there's the part where Gregg says "this report has no legal standing" and he goes "yes, it does" and that gets both Gregg and Tim to break so I imagine that line was ad-libbed

agreed though that Joe is the best, he's kind of the perfect companion for both of them - he's appeared in 200 movies but doesn't have anything interesting to say about any of them, and he's good-natured and affable enough to put up with Tim. plus he's enough of a D-lister to genuinely appreciate any kind of show who would want to honor him. he's probably my favorite guest on the show.

Toni is also very good, her character is very recognizable but not something you see represented a lot on screen. very dark humor to the bits where she's like "uh-oh, Tim's mad at me again!" and just heads to the bar (despite possibly being pregnant). only part of that character that doesn't work for me is her son who is way way too good looking to be a pissbottle gamer

this was an incredible moment

I gotta set aside time to watch again to catch more details.

Van Halen dot Senate dot flashlight (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:05 (two years ago) link

felt like toni was breaking for most of the special but that was kinda great in itself, like it simultaneously works as a form of compartmentalization for the character for her to laugh at tim's abusive fugues,,,,, uh sorry if that's dark

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:07 (two years ago) link

also... idk, i love matt, his single syllable responses even further garbled by the zoom stream plus intermittent chugs from the infinite mountain dew bottle... fuckin lost it

mellon collie and the infinite bradness (BradNelson), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:08 (two years ago) link

the glitchiness of remote video streaming technology really brought back first oscar special vibes for me lol

I want to say that since he grew the beard the guy who I lays Matt looks super familiar to me. Was he one of the Hobbit Heads in an early Special?

Van Halen dot Senate dot flashlight (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:24 (two years ago) link

*Plays* Matt

but he IS handsome.

Van Halen dot Senate dot flashlight (Boring, Maryland), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 16:25 (two years ago) link

yeah tim trying to play games with matt was probably the hardest i laughed. the kid may be more goodlooking than your standard pissbottler but imo he is very good as a zero affect/no personality teen, perfect foil for tim.

I completely lost it during last year's special when they showed a bunch of father/son stock images and then cut to Matt Newman

the part at 50:30: link

eisimpleir (crüt), Tuesday, 27 April 2021 17:03 (two years ago) link

I guess it makes sense in that Tim naturally gravitates towards good looking people - his DKR buds were (presumably) chosen for their looks, the CGI Tom Cruise Heidecker was a male model, he's always very particular about what people wear on the show - so maybe he just wants to be a father figure to him b/c he's good looking

felt like toni was breaking for most of the special but that was kinda great in itself, like it simultaneously works as a form of compartmentalization for the character for her to laugh at tim's abusive fugues,,,,, uh sorry if that's dark

yeah it was hard to work out how much of that was intentional. she clearly broke character when Tim was ripping off the posters but some of that was intended to be nervous laughter - watching her entire pyramid scheme crumble on live TV as Tim was wearing the face mask (which I thought really worked because Tim complains about literally everything), it felt like she was laughing just to assure the audience "it's okay, he's not really hurt". also I've kind of gathered her character is drunk all the time and possibly marked by past traumas and therefore she doesn't really give a shit about anything anymore

idk how many of you are HEI subscribers but there's a really funny "Mandatory Network Survey" up there now - it's basically the same as those Trump surveys that went out where the options were "Excellent" and "Very Good" but it does have a great joke at the end: "What minor suggestions would you make to improve the quality of Hei Network?" with a big textbox that only accepts 10 characters

just enough room for "Tom Cruise"

eisimpleir (crüt), Tuesday, 11 May 2021 17:20 (two years ago) link

Somehow never heard about this show til like a year ago, despite loving Tim & Eric, but slowly watching everything in order has been an incredible time. Just finished season 8 on the timeline. Even with everything that's happened, the original elements of the show are still the funniest part / only get funnier. Though the most I laughed was probably the stock photo reveal at the end of each Port of Call: Hawaii: Save the Island opening -- caught me off guard every single time.

Funniest moment for me is probably the Joe Estevez lifetime achievement award during one of the Oscar Specials. The whole thing was like a fever dream and I honestly thought some of the clips they found were cooked up by the producers.
