there has been a shift over the last decade or so, hasn't there? a certain kind of artist like this was expected to be a kind of mystical visionary, and being a tinfoil milliner was generally shrugged off as an affected eccentricity. but now we have seen that this bullshit has consequences, nobody has time for it any more. understandably these frazzled old hippies seem to be bewildered by this change in their reception.

i assume none of this is going to change his mind. maybe he might backtrack a little if it starts affecting his bottom line too much, his ability to get booked, record, find collaborators etc. but only maybe. idk how many other musicians in his orbit either share these views or would feel obliged to defend his right to an opinion, or if he's already alienated most of them. i have no idea how financially secure someone like him is, whether he already has or is likely to take a hit for this or not, whether he can afford to or not, or whether that would affect his (enthusiasm for sharing his) views either way

this shift has been largely for the better but it does make people like this feel even more like persecuted truth tellers

I know quite a few old punk/crust/hippy lags, and they mostly combine a worthy anti-authoritarian stance with any old conspiracy bollocks, which they perceive as an unarguably true worldview you're obliged to swallow whole. It just makes more sensible/less stoned people (like, er, me) hesitant about agreeing with anything they say, as they'll only take it as an opportunity to let you know your opinions are invalid until you agree with all the rest of it.
