he further expounded on his views on the pandemic, describing it as a “sham”, “complete and utter bollocks”, intended to “harvest DNA and sell vaccines”, while the vaccine itself was “a piece of software they are injecting into you”.

I think Evan's 'research' paths need to pivot towards an actual understanding of human biology.

I gave it my all and my all wasn't enough (Matt #2), Friday, 11 June 2021 11:52 (two years ago) link

there has been a shift over the last decade or so, hasn't there? a certain kind of artist like this was expected to be a kind of mystical visionary, and being a tinfoil milliner was generally shrugged off as an affected eccentricity. but now we have seen that this bullshit has consequences, nobody has time for it any more. understandably these frazzled old hippies seem to be bewildered by this change in their reception.

A viking of frowns, (Camaraderie at Arms Length), Friday, 11 June 2021 12:03 (two years ago) link

i assume none of this is going to change his mind. maybe he might backtrack a little if it starts affecting his bottom line too much, his ability to get booked, record, find collaborators etc. but only maybe. idk how many other musicians in his orbit either share these views or would feel obliged to defend his right to an opinion, or if he's already alienated most of them. i have no idea how financially secure someone like him is, whether he already has or is likely to take a hit for this or not, whether he can afford to or not, or whether that would affect his (enthusiasm for sharing his) views either way

Left, Friday, 11 June 2021 12:21 (two years ago) link

this shift has been largely for the better but it does make people like this feel even more like persecuted truth tellers

Left, Friday, 11 June 2021 12:22 (two years ago) link

COVID-denialism as a (maybe) semi-subconscious rejection of all the ways the world has changed, for (imo) better *and* for (obviously) worse?

Left, Friday, 11 June 2021 12:26 (two years ago) link

like i'm thinking about how so many of these people seem to combine serious (mixed with / filtered through bullshit) concerns about big tech, govt authoritarianism, the pharmaceutical industry, ecological destruction, and other things with seemingly unrelated shit about wokeness and cancel culture, racist and antisemitic stuff, anti-trans stuff, treating it like it's all part of the same big conspiracy (mostly against them personally)?

Left, Friday, 11 June 2021 12:35 (two years ago) link

Looks like Cafe Oto have no problem with this dumbass, I'm sure he won't starve.

Are Animated Dads Getting Hotter? (Tom D.), Friday, 11 June 2021 12:52 (two years ago) link

The Wire's editorial is... impressively measured.

Noel Emits, Friday, 11 June 2021 13:05 (two years ago) link

I know quite a few old punk/crust/hippy lags, and they mostly combine a worthy anti-authoritarian stance with any old conspiracy bollocks, which they perceive as an unarguably true worldview you're obliged to swallow whole. It just makes more sensible/less stoned people (like, er, me) hesitant about agreeing with anything they say, as they'll only take it as an opportunity to let you know your opinions are invalid until you agree with all the rest of it. Funny how the avowed anti-racists all end up espousing anti-Semitic conspiracies.

xps penny rimbaud came up earlier i think. maybe this is more for the brain worms thread but what makes this so frustrating is how familiar it is, how predicable the trajectory is and how it seems almost impossible to stop or reverse it. I have known too many of these people. but it troubles me so much all concerns about the way things are being handled seem to be funneled in this very fashy direction almost as a matter of course now

Left, Friday, 11 June 2021 14:17 (two years ago) link

I seem to recall an article about that sax player written by someone who managed a festival that he played at, contending that he SHOULD be allowed to preach anti-abortion on stage, because that is "artistic free expression", but he SHOULD NOT be allowed to say those things in everyday life.

I sort of have loose/distant connections to people who know Evan P, and there's definitely been a move from "shuffling uncomfortably" to actively distancing themselves/a few vocal call-outs.

So far I haven't seen any mutuals with Charles Hayward calling him out, though I don't know how close any of my friends actually are with him.

That was Charles Gayle. He's been doing that anti-abortion shit -- and nasty homophobic rants -- since at least 1996.
