yeah, I only got into the album pretty recently and was surprised at how much I liked the whole thing.

Bad Guy. I feel a bit ick if I pay attention to the lyrics, but that minimal groove is just amazing.

"i love you" followed by "you should see me in a crown" then "bury a friend"

still waiting for this from the library, years later. I'll be there for the re-poll.

Great record. Somewhere between Listen Before I Go Bad Guy or Bury A Friend.

7 singles, 1 hit

one (pop) radio hit you mean

"bury a friend" and "when the party's over" were both substantial hits despite peaking outside the top 10. "bury a friend" also reached #1 at alternative radio (for whatever that's worth on a format that is now dominated by oldies tunes)

"when the party's over" was actually pushed to top 40 radio for quite a long time but b/c top 40 programmers are among the stupidest ppl in the entire music industry they resisted playing it due to it, i guess, 'sounding weird for the format' or b/c 'streaming doesn't reflect real mainstream enthusiasm'. when they ended up being proven wrong on both of those counts and then some, some stations (like the one in my city) finally started playing it a decent amount, but, like, embarrassingly late. by that time the album and "bad guy" had already come out and they finally started getting with the program somewhat

Anyone seen her documentary yet?

piscesx, Monday, 26 April 2021 03:11 (two years ago) link

After re-listening to this I went with Ilomilo just ahead of I Love You.

As good as the album is, Everything I Wanted is still my favourite song of hers by a long way.

xp: looks like it's only available on Apple+.

The documentary is pretty good, if a bit long. Her parents are cool and really patient, her talented and preternaturally mature brother comes across like a 35 year old pretending to be a 20 year old. There's a really nice Justin Bieber moment. You get to see her take her driver's test.

Ok this has genuinely sold it to me! Thanks Josh.

she is rumored to be releasing new music imminently. this poll was an industry plant!

dyl, Monday, 26 April 2021 19:30 (two years ago) link

Yeah the documentary is really good. Her boyfriend (now long ex boyfriend I assume) is a dick. I most empathised with her dad. It made me feel like teenage girls get a raw deal, even if they’re famous with seemingly very well adjusted families. It’s lovely when she meets Bieber. Orlando Bloomps is a moran.

"bury a friend" is like "black skinhead" combined with "people are strange," so that's the one

"Baby, I don't feel so good", six words you never understood

not even a sample from the office could ruin it for me

I just remembered the shuddering digital cadences in "ilomilo", it reminds me of Reich's "18 Musicians" (if that's still an acceptable namecheck). Massive track on headphones, as is much of the album.

I didn't vote, but would have gone for "When the Party's Over."

I still can't get with the muttercore vibe of most the album... for me, her best stuff came both before and after it. (kind of an interesting case, where an artist's breakthrough album doesn't really play to their strengths... though obv. it did OK for her!!)
